Ferdinand, Dog of Love and Wonder, had a great goodbye party with friends in the park. Please light a candle at 5 pm EST. He has had an awesome life, spreading love wherever he went; would that all of us could have half as great a life.

Dear friends of Ferdinand: we are taking one last happy walk with him at 2:30 pm in Hubbard Park in Montpelier, meeting at the dog park. He's totally fine for this and would love to see you. Come say goodbye and wish him a sweet journey over the Rainbow Bridge.

send love to this guy. He's in a bit of health trouble.
Here's the situation: Ferdinand was unable to p*e so our vet in VT ran a catheter to empty his bladder (he was super uncomfortable) and believes it stems from a spinal issue — his vet believes that his nerve signals aren’t functioning properly and sending correct messages to his bladder. Long story, but he has had increasing weakness in his back legs and it’s been an ongoing issue to figure out how to deal with it. We’ve tried laser therapy and acupuncture and though these treatments appeared to give him some relief, he’s continued to have difficulty. Then he was unable to p*e and now we’re in an emergency situation. The hospital in Maine was the only one that could do an emergency neurological exam and, of course, this being Thanksgiving week, there were not other alternatives. Hopefully he will get that today — otherwise we’re in another situation

Retriever
by Barbara Crooker

If' “Heaven is a lovely lake of beer” as St. Bridget wrote,
then dog heaven must be this tub of kibble, where you can push
your muzzle all day long without getting bloat or bellyache,
Where every toilet seat is raised, at the right level
for slurping and fire hydrant and saplings tell you, “Here.
Relieve yourself on us.” And the sun and moon
fall at your feet, celestial frisbees flinging themselves
in shining arcs for your soft mouth to retrieve. Rumi says,
“Personality is a small dog trying to get the soul to play,”
but you are a big dog, with an even larger heart, and you
have redeemed our better selves. Forgive us for the times
we walked away, wanted to do taxes or wash dishes
instead of playing fetch or tugger. ln the green field
of heaven, there are no collars, no leashes, no delivery trucks
with bad brakes, and all the dogs run free. Barking is allowed,
and every pocket holds a treat. Sit. Stay. Good dog.
