A very well written piece from a good friend of ours. Homesteading can be as much or as little of a lifestyle as you desire. We strive every day to improve our little farm to become more sufficient for ourselves. Do what you can within your means and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Recently I joined a few homesteading groups on Facebook, and I was overwhelmed by the amount of negativity on people asking how to best work very small pieces of land. These were people who had honest questions about how to best use what they had in their backyards and front yards and instead of support, they were met with snarky comments that “that’s not homesteading“ and other vitriol.

And I’m here to tell you… Homesteading is not how much property you have and is not measured or graded by how “hardcore rustic” you get. It’s a lifestyle that is very much an evolution, where you work on furthering your own sustainability with whatever you have- regardless of how much or how little it is.

It drives me nuts to see people get totally stepped on because they only have a third of an acre in the suburbs and they’re not building their own house in the middle of the woods with no running water and electricity. That may appeal to some, but may not be realistic for others. And it’s not a competition.

Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and may also involve the small scale making of goods to trade or sell for other goods.

Anything you do to be more connected to the nature we live in and what we eat/use/wear... that’s where the heart of it is. And so even if you have very little to work with, you can still make the most of it. So for any of you reading this who like the idea of homesteading but don’t think it’s feasible for you… I’d like for you to reconsider. Building it into your every day is something that’s totally doable, regardless of what that every day looks like.❤️

We would like to officially welcome the newest resident to the ranch, sweet old Jake! We snatched this guy up at the latest horse sale in hopes he would make a good companion for our yearling b***o Asspen. He is definitely in need of some TLC and already has an appointment set with our farrier for Friday. We'll keep him on a pretty strict diet to help him lose a few pounds and once his feet are back in good shape he'll have plenty of turnout time. He and Asspen are already getting along great and we think he's going to enjoy his retirement here ❤️

We finished the Heritage of the Horse Versatility Ranch Horse show series yesterday. Halestormn (Lzzy) finished the year out Reserve Novice Champion in a division with some well seasoned horses and riders. I am so pleased with how far she has come this year and am really looking forward to continuing to work with her and seeing her progress!

I have been pretty quiet on this page lately and I apologize! August is a busy month for us with a lot of different things going on. I will try and be better about keeping this page up to date. One thing I realized I have dropped the ball on is introducing Asspen here! So enjoy the photo dump of our sweet and sassy girl!
Asspen is an 8 month old BLM b***o, who we received in May as part of a TIP Challenge program. We have a total of 90 days to train her everything from basic leading and grooming to trail obstacles and tricks. While some animals will be auctioned off at the end of the event, Asspen will remain a permanent resident here at Red Horse Ranch. ❤️

We have had so much going on the past couple of weeks, from building new pens to shuffling critters around. These guys are partly to blame. We'd like to formerly introduce the newest babies on the ranch, our beautiful little Boer babies Malibu (rose colored) and Captain (brown and white). They are a brother and sister pair and we hope to get some lovely little kids out of Mailbu next spring, while Captain will get to hang out and be her lifelong buddy (he was much too cute to eat 🤣). Welcome to the ranch babies ❤️

Lots of critter shuffling today (more pictures to come soon). But most importantly, mama and the babies have moved outside! Babies aren't quite sure what to think but they sure do love cruising around ❤️

As hot summer days approach we are always looking for fun and healthy ways to keep our piggies cool. We have found that frozen yogurt treats are a big hit! We take a fat and sugar free yogurt and freeze them in ice cube trays, or in Vienna's case we freeze the whole cup. This was the babies first taste and I'd say it was a big hit!

We would like to formally introduce the newest little members of our farm. These sweet babies turned a week old on Sunday and are doing great! They will be looking for their new homes in another month or so.
