Yep, it is cold out there and the temperatures will continue to drop. Animal control officers around the state are going to have a busy weekend checking on pets left out in the cold!

Even though your breed of dog may love the cold, we are talking about northern dog breeds, shelter is still required by most cities and counties around the State of Colorado. Check your local laws, don't be the one that animal control pays a visit to this weekend!

Thank you Animal Control Officers for Colorado!

Please bring pets in out of the cold. Just like you, they can die from hypothermia.

Pets and cold weather;

Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather.

Keep your pets healthy and happy!

Bill Cunningham, MAPA President, and Karen Arnold, Member at Large, hold their certificates of appreciation from the City Council in recognition of their fifteen years of selfless leadership with Montrose Animal Protection Agency (MAPA). Presenting the awards is MAPA's Vice-President, Ron Abbott.

Under Bill and Karen's leadership, MAPA has been able to expand and maintain the spay/neuter voucher program as well as the educational offerings for adults and youngsters. While they are stepping away from board positions, they will remain an active part of MAPA while a newly elected president and board get up to speed.

Thank you, Bill and Karen!

There are many excellent dog trainers in our area of which Kerri is one. If your dog is presenting behavior issues or you need to just get training to understand your dog and your role, please find help. Most of the time it can be addressed AND it keeps dogs out of rescues and shelters.

I got my start in dog training straight out of college, working full time training guide dogs for the blind in NY. I eventually relocated to Denver, where I spent a few years training hearing dogs for the deaf. Upon relocating to Montrose 20 years ago, I started my own pet dog training business and became a nationally certified pet dog trainer (CPDT-KA).

I’ve also spent time working in a veterinary clinic and as an Animal Control Officer, along with volunteering at shelters and speaking at behavior seminars, so my knowledge is well rounded. I’ve always been very focused on continuing education and keeping up with the latest developments in behavior science. I use positive reinforcement training methods; always the least intrusive, minimally aversive approach that will improve relationships and understanding of what makes your animal tick. In all honesty, I’m really more of a human trainer for pets. 🙂

The last few years, I’ve stepped back to focus on improving my health and chronic pain. So, getting back into things, in the next few months I will be taking exams to obtain even higher levels of certification in dog behavior, as well as testing to become a nationally certified cat behaviorist! 🐾 I’m taking new clients for local or VIRTUAL behavior consults and pet care. Please reach out if you’d like to connect! I’d also love to get to know other local professionals in the field and create a network of support for our community!

Congratulations, if you are! 😊

Followers, please share but don’t panic. The article has good info.

We have decided, in light of this and keeping our four legged best friends safe to not hold Santa Paws on the 9th. We look forward to next year and of course, our Spayghetti Dinner in February! Watch for updates in January.

A contagious virus leading to upper respiratory infection is affecting the canine community along the Front Range of Colorado, surprising pet owners and veterinary circles in recent months. The virus, which is under intense observation by Colorado State University veterinarians, has been linked to c...

Followers, MAPA and Chow Down have decided it's in the best interest of our dogs and our community to cancel the Santa Paws event on December 9th at Chow Down due to a Canine Respiratory Disease in Colorado. Here is a link to Colorado Dept of Agriculture PACFA information.

Last updated November 22, 2023The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) has been receiving calls over the past two months from practicing veterinarians reporting an elevated number of canine respiratory disease cases in the state. Other states, including Oregon, Florida, and New Hampshire, are se...

Please, please, please read both sections of this post and share this and let's do our part as good pet parents and animal lovers to keep our (and other's) pets safe this winter. Thank you to Stray Cat and Pawsitive Restorations Animal Restorations for this PSA!

🚨🚨 It's about to get DEADLY cold outside. Here is what you should do to keep pets safe...

Don't be an idiot, bring your pets INSIDE THE HOUSE! Put padlocks on your gates to make sure they don't blow open and your pets don't get out. Supervise your pets on potty breaks. You can also put potty pads in the garage so your dogs can go potty out there. If you need potty pads, let us know, and we'll give you some. NO cat or dog is built to withstand the predicted temps of -30° to -60°, and no crap doghouse with straw inside is going to keep them alive. Let them in, or give them to someone who will care for them appropriately.

👉 Check the pads of your dog's feet for tiny snowballs. They can be very painful. If your dog has these stuck to their feet, you can fill the tub or sink with a few inches of lukewarm water. The little snowballs will melt off.

👉 If you are able, please leave your garage door open about 4" to allow animals to take refuge in the garage.

👉👉👉 IF YOU SEE A DOG OR CAT OUT IN THIS MESS, PICK THEM UP, OR BRING THEM INSIDE! Don't assume that the "next person" will do it. They need you to help them, now! Contact us if you can't hold on to them for a day or two. We will try to accommodate them as long as we have space.

👉 If you happen across an animal suffering hypothermia from the cold, please take them to the nearest animal emergency room or contact us. PRAR has space for SOME animals who find themselves stuck out in the coming storm.

***EDIT TO ADD*** Watch your idiot dogs so that they don't try to lick snow off any metal furniture. There was an incident. Her tongue got stuck (Think - "A Christmas Story.") We got her tongue off the metal chair leg super fast!. IF THIS HAPPENS - Get Lukewarm water QUICKLY, and pour it on your idiot dog's tongue to un-freeze it from the metal. Monitor the tongue for frostbite. Seek medical attention if the tongue turns funny colors, swells up, or if your dog rips their tongue.

Let's all do our part to keep our furry friends safe through this storm. 😁
