Please, please, please read both sections of this post and share this and let's do our part as good pet parents and animal lovers to keep our (and other's) pets safe this winter. Thank you to Stray Cat and Pawsitive Restorations Animal Restorations for this PSA!
🚨🚨 It's about to get DEADLY cold outside. Here is what you should do to keep pets safe...
Don't be an idiot, bring your pets INSIDE THE HOUSE! Put padlocks on your gates to make sure they don't blow open and your pets don't get out. Supervise your pets on potty breaks. You can also put potty pads in the garage so your dogs can go potty out there. If you need potty pads, let us know, and we'll give you some. NO cat or dog is built to withstand the predicted temps of -30° to -60°, and no crap doghouse with straw inside is going to keep them alive. Let them in, or give them to someone who will care for them appropriately.
👉 Check the pads of your dog's feet for tiny snowballs. They can be very painful. If your dog has these stuck to their feet, you can fill the tub or sink with a few inches of lukewarm water. The little snowballs will melt off.
👉 If you are able, please leave your garage door open about 4" to allow animals to take refuge in the garage.
👉👉👉 IF YOU SEE A DOG OR CAT OUT IN THIS MESS, PICK THEM UP, OR BRING THEM INSIDE! Don't assume that the "next person" will do it. They need you to help them, now! Contact us if you can't hold on to them for a day or two. We will try to accommodate them as long as we have space.
👉 If you happen across an animal suffering hypothermia from the cold, please take them to the nearest animal emergency room or contact us. PRAR has space for SOME animals who find themselves stuck out in the coming storm.
***EDIT TO ADD*** Watch your idiot dogs so that they don't try to lick snow off any metal furniture. There was an incident. Her tongue got stuck (Think - "A Christmas Story.") We got her tongue off the metal chair leg super fast!. IF THIS HAPPENS - Get Lukewarm water QUICKLY, and pour it on your idiot dog's tongue to un-freeze it from the metal. Monitor the tongue for frostbite. Seek medical attention if the tongue turns funny colors, swells up, or if your dog rips their tongue.
Let's all do our part to keep our furry friends safe through this storm. 😁
