Mailboxes have been getting broken into throughout our entire area. If you have a community mail box, those are being broken into, and if you don't have a community mailbox, they will get broken into if they haven't already. We've recently had several here in Hidden Springs that have been compromised. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this or not, but if you have not, here are some steps to consider once it has happened:
1. Call the police and file a police report
2. Call the post office and let them know the mail box is/has been compromised. You can pick your mail up from the main post office but you must have a valid I.D. in order to do it.
3. Ask to be connected to the Main office of the Postal Inspector. Because Mail theft has become so rampant, where the Postal inspectors were not doing a whole lot, they are now investigating and prosecuting more and more perpetrators than in the past. The main office should connect you with the District Postal Inspectors office: they will gather necessary information from you and will forward the information to the local Postal Inspectors Office. They may try and contact you later for more information as well.
4. Call your Bank(s) and let them know what has happened. They will let you know if they had mailed anything to you that may have been stolen. If so, they may suggest account changes and cancellation of accounts right away. Remember, part of what the perpetrators will do is attempt identity theft, not just collect money you were sending to your family in a Christmas Card. The bank will also make notations on your account with the information and will be especially diligent in watching your accounts (and most are already pretty diligent).
According to the post office, they will have their route carrier's take a photo of the unit if it cannot be secured and will determine if they, the post office can repair the unit. If they can, they will but it could take up to 10 days. If they cannot, you will be responsible for replacing the unit. If you are in an HOA, then the HOA may be responsible for replacing the unit.
Here in Hidden Springs, we do not have an HOA so many of the community boxes have been paid for by all of the neighbors in the immediate area. Should the post office not be able to repair your box so your mail is secure, you and your neighbors will be responsible to have it repaired.
Once repaired, you might consider having one of the neighbors point a camera in that direction and maybe all of you can participate in that cost (which has come down dramatically). This way, if it were to happen again, when the police ask if you have evidence to whom the perpetrator may be, next time, you will.
Hope this helps. If anyone has any other tips on this, please do not hesitate to leave comments.
