Penelope slept calmly through the night; woke around 7AM.
Yesterday's emergency vet visit resulted in the following:
-Extensive fecal test to see what may be disrupting her gut; the vet team believes it may be a gut issue, so we will know more with those results
- Bloodwork was done to check particular enzymes. They were questioning the pancreas performance, but all looked to be ok (results shared, let night)
She was given an appetite stimulant, which helped her eat two chicken breasts last night and a handful of chicken and a small amount of cottage cheese this AM
Her tail was addressed by the team (fur trimmed back, cleaned, and we have a new ointment for the recovery. There is no amputation at this time.
They redirected the med combination and eliminated Rimadyl, Fluoxetine and Gabapentin (only to be used on as needed basis)
She is now currently on a broad spectrum antibiotic as well as Metronidazole to help with her diarrhea and a probiotic in pill form to take twice a day
-Her anxiety level is like a light switch - when it flips on it can't be turned off for a while which is why the team wanted to send her home to her familiar environment to decompress from the visit
We are on call for her ultrasound today to ensure she does not have any blockages, check her abdominal health, and confirm whether or not she is spayed

We'll give an update this evening on the results of her ultrasound. Our hope is that it's just an upset stomach, meds, etc.

Hello, everyone.
Our sweet girl Penelope has faced a setback today and is currently at the Emergency Vet with her foster. As you know, she has not been eating much and over the last day/day and a half started having diarrhea. This combination is concerning, hence the visit today.
In addition, over the weekend (we have only had her in our care for a little more than 48+ hours) we started questioning her weight as it did not seem as though she was 73-75 pounds as the vet in LA indicated (and even though our transport was physically present when she was weighed and saw the weight himself). We wanted to be sure and sure enough we were right. She is only 53 pounds.
All this is to say is that she is in the hands of experts now and we will be re-running a series of diagnostics and performing a few more tests to know exactly what is going on with her.
We will be running a fecal test, but a more extensive test, so as to rule out any parasitic or gastrointestinal issues, we are also going to run another blood panel which will include any deficiencies her body is currently suffering from.
We will also be performing an ultrasound to see if there are any blockages or obstructions and also to confirm whether she is spayed or not.
Her tail is also being looked at once again. Although it is scabbing over and has the appearance of healing, portions of it remain open and oozing. The vet at first glance did not like its appearance where it's headed and will decide again if we need to amputate or proceed as we have been proceeding. Regardless, it will be trimmed, cleaned, wrapped for the time being and she will most likely need to be administered antibiotics but we will know more in a short period of time.
We are also revising her medication combination to eliminate Rimadyl and Benadryl and may incorporate Acepromazine or an equivalent.
We will continue with Gabapentin and Fluoxetine per her initial medication schedule. She will also be given an appetite stimulant to encourage

Hi everyone,
We wanted to provide you with an evening update on Penelope (formerly Ashley of Devore and Woofy Acres hoarding case).
WHAT WE’RE CELEBRATING:
We have only had her in foster care for 24 hours but there is a lot we’ve learned about her. She is a gem. Once she has time to decompress – to learn what love actually is – she will be the perfect companion. We see her soul and she’s precious.
Underneath the mental/emotional chaos is a dog that wants and craves love. As shared this morning, she does like attention/petting but only in short spurts. We give her the space to back off. She can be handled however - her mouth/face, legs, top of paws, belly, but her neck and tail – it can be hit or miss.
-Squeaky toys intrigue her (the more the merrier). All the smells of the outside world she’s fascinated by, yet being outside does elevate her anxiety so walks vary.
-She has met a few people in the last 24hours and has done well, curious, cautious and able to handle physical touch but briefly.
WHAT WE’RE WITNESSING:
-A dog that has lived in fight/flight for years it seems.
- Spinning in both directions throughout the day today – some slow, easy to distract her out of - others fast, where she mentally checked out and has repeatedly gone after her tail
-Pacing, uncertain of her environment or anyone for that matter (it’s understandable it’s only been 24 hrs)
- On some walks it will only be 10 steps until she decides to pull right back to her bedroom. Other walks have lasted up to 30 mins
-Seeks attention 20% of the time. 80% of the time she’s on alert, pacing and unsure of what to do with any information coming at her.
-Inability to interpret stressors - her head gets in the way and drives her to her compulsive behaviors including self harm
- Lack of appetite this morning, however, she did eat treats throughout the day and a full meal this evening (we’re still figuring out what she likes)
-Does not like restriction
