Winter Egg-spectations: Why Are Your Hens Laying Fewer Eggs? ๐ฅโ๏ธ
Factors that Affect Egg Production:
๐ Lighting โ Once the day length starts to drop below 12-14 hours per day, chickens will often have a natural drop in egg production.
๐ก๏ธ Temperature โ In cold weather, hens use nutrients to stay warm, reducing resources for egg-laying.
๐ Age โ By their third winter, hens may show a significant decline in egg production.
Tips to Keep Your Flock Happy & Productive:
๐ก Add lighting โUse timers or manually control lights to provide 14-18 hours of light per day. (Or let them rest naturally!)
๐ Winterize the coop โ Properly winterize your coop and ensure proper nutrition!
๐ฅ Add young birds โ Consider adding new, young birds to your flock, and research breeds best for egg-laying!
