Flint had another calm day. He got a hooficure and has happy feet now. He simple adores his hay and his mashes. So very glad that we got him here before this cold be settled in this week.

Flint had a pretty good day and I think some of you may appreciate this - his p**p is finally formed! It’s been more soft than not - watery at times but now there are f***l balls - this is a good thing! His appetite is good and he is drinking well.

We’re having some cold temps starting tonight so he’s tucked in with a blanket. It’s a bit big on him but we ordered him one that should fit. Hopefully, it will be here in the next couple of days.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s update and please keep the good thoughts and prayers coming - they appear to be working!

Flint's bloodwork results reflect those commonly seen in a starved horse. While there are some highs and lows, it's encouraging that there are no signs of infection but it doesn’t help that his f***l was positive for parasites.

Currently, Flint's body condition score is just below a 1. In this scoring system, which ranges from 1 to 9, a lower score indicates a more difficult rehabilitation process. While I can't guarantee Flint's recovery, his determination to overcome is apparent which certainly helps. We will do everything we can to improve his chances.

Today, we observed that Flint’s stool has become more formed, and his appetite remains strong. He was slightly less active, which is ok - we don't want him burning much needed calories. He is still very vocal and engaged with everything happening around him.

During the process of starvation, the body depletes fat and muscle, causing a slowdown in metabolism and resulting in weakness. The horse struggles to regulate its temperature, and the immune system becomes compromised. The body first utilizes fat for energy, and once that is exhausted, it turns to muscle tissue, including the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and heart. This depletion of muscle leads to a loss of electrolytes and proteins, causing a deterioration of the digestive system and reduced nutrient absorption. Flint's gastrointestinal function has been significantly affected, and restoring his ability to digest and absorb feed will take time. However, with patience, a proper refeeding plan, and plenty of tender loving care, we are committed to supporting him through this – he truly deserves it. We will repeat the blood tests in about a week.

Please keep Flint in your thoughts and prayers; your positive support is greatly appreciated. Here, we firmly believe in the power of prayer and in miracles. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year filled with blessings.

Flint was good for his vet exam today. The vet scored him at barely a 1 on the body condition scale (1 to 9). Under Flint’s fluffy coat there’s just bones. We should have f***l and bloodwork results back tomorrow. Our care team will review them, regroup, and make needed adjustments to his care. Oh - he’s up there in years, 25+.

The majority of horses with a BCS of 1 and below usually don’t make it - starvation takes a toll. We have had several cases of this nature, and while the majority have pulled through, there have been a couple that we have lost. The next couple of weeks are critical. We use UC Davis protocol in our rehabilitation / refeeding process. I’m including a link here if anyone wants to learn more about it.

Flint has been more alert today and pretty talkative. He wants to stick around for many more years. He’s got a great mental attitude, which is very important. His eyes are bright with hope. We believe in him and would appreciate continued good thoughts and prayers for him.

We will update everyone again tomorrow. The farrier will be coming to take care of Flint’s neglected feet. We will have the dentist out once he is stable and puts on a little bit of weight.

Have a good night and thank you for caring about this precious soul.

His name is Flint. He had a good night and was happy to go out this morning. He’s such a very sweet and kind horse. He was so very hungry when we picked him up - it was so sad. He truly appreciates his hay and slurries.

His heart rate is normal, good gut sounds, lungs sounded ok, capillary refill rate about normal, a bit dehydrated but he is drinking. Temperature is a bit low but he was out in some heavy rain before we picked him up - there’s no fat, and very little muscle, on his body. But he’s under heat lamps now. He taped in at about 600 lbs. There’s quite a bit of sand in his p**p - I could hear sand sounds. We will let him relax and adjust to his new surroundings this evening and the vet will be out tomorrow unless we need have an emergency before then.

He’s not out of the woods by far but he’s now on the right path. We will have a better idea of his health tomorrow after he’s vetted and blood test results come back. Mentally, he certainly is in no frame of mind to give up.

I do believe this kind horse wouldn’t have made it much longer - there was no grass, no hay, nothing for him to eat but perhaps bark off of trees. We are very grateful for everyone’s support which enables us to help him.

This gelding is in bad shape and needs help. This photo was taken last week and I’m told he looks worse now and that he’s weaker. He’s said to be a 25 year old QH.

We want to go into the New Year by helping this poor soul but we need your help to make it happen. We’re asking for pledges - he needs a full vet exam, including bloodwork. He’s going to need dental work and farrier care. We don’t know what meds and supplements he may need until blood test results come back. He needs good alfalfa hay to get started on a refeeding program.

It’s going to be down in the 30’s this coming week - he needs to get here sooner than later. Once he’s in our possession, we will update and ask that pledges be honored. Thank you.

THE OLD ONE

I share this story each year at Christmastime. Some know it as “Only for Love” and some call it “The Old One.” We have several 'old ones' living out their sunset years at Beauty's Haven and we are so truly privileged to be able to share our lives with these incredible 'Wise Old Souls. Our 'old ones' who are twenty years old and older, include Amira, Bouie, Dancer, Ebony, Frodo, Jo, Luiji, Magic, Mishka, Mo, Peaches, Shai, Warrior, and Valley Girl.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the 'old ones' is their wisdom. They have lived through countless experiences and have developed a deep understanding of the world around them. Their interactions with humans and other horses, have shaped their perspectives and given them a unique insight into life. It is through their wisdom that they teach us valuable lessons about patience, trust, and resilience.

Many 'old ones' have special needs, but that does not diminish their worth or the love and care they deserve. In fact, their special needs often deepen the bond between them and their caregivers, as we work together to ensure their comfort and well-being. Their longevity is a testament to their resilience.

These 'old ones' are not just horses who have lived a long time; they are living testaments to the profound impact that animals can have on our lives. They remind us to cherish every moment and appreciate the wisdom that comes with age. We are truly blessed to have them in our lives, and they continue to inspire and enrich us with their presence.

ONLY FOR LOVE

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt the elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day's end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One." She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had foals from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?" The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor and his arm stole defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift. Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift - because of love. Only because of love.
