Life has been busy around here with both the two-legged and four-legged kids keeping us on our toes! Our "Frozen" litter is now 6 weeks old and growing up strong and solid. We just can't get enough of these sweet pups! We’ve started packing their going home bags ❤️

Welcome to Penny Lane Labradors! With our pages growing I wanted to take a few minutes and introduce ourselves.

We are a small military family of Lab lovers, located in sunny Florida, just an hour and a half north of Disney World. Penny Lane is run by myself, Sarrah Dollar, my sweet husband, Randy, and our three children. Everything we do here is a labor of love born from a deep passion for the Labrador breed. ♥️

Our name Penny Lane was created as both a playful nod to our last name, Dollar, and a tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time, the Beetles! My passion and love of the Labrador breed started very young because I grew up helping raise them alongside my mother, Michelle Mitchell of Quail Meadow Labradors. That instilled in me a lifelong commitment to breed preservation and excellence. Randy quickly became lab obsessed and shared in this enthusiasm when we met, and together we strive to uphold the highest standards of the breed.

At Penny Lane Labradors, we are dedicated to raising AKC bench-bred, also known as English Labs, in black, chocolate, and yellow, (ranging from white to red) that embody the best qualities of the breed. Our goal is to produce healthy, happy, and sound puppies that make a positive impact on every life they touch. We maintain a rigorous standard for our breeding program, ensuring each dog undergoes comprehensive health testing, including hip and elbow x-rays through The Orthopedic Foundation, patella certifications, cardiac testing, and a full genetic panel screening for over 250 conditions.

Temperament is equally important to us, as we believe that good behavior and a lack of aggression are inherited traits. Conformation is also a key focus; we strive to produce Labs with excellent structure and handsome block heads. All our puppies are raised inside our home, where we emphasize early stimulation and socialization. They are AKC registered, microchipped, and receive thorough vet checks along with a Florida health certificate at eight weeks.

Through our page here, we aim to share the joys and challenges of breeding, and give you a glimpse into our little world.

Meet Marmalade, the sweetest little guy who's all ready to melt hearts in his new home! At 12 weeks old, he’s completed all three rounds of his puppy vaccines and is ready to safely go on adventures, ensuring he's healthy and protected. 💉 💉 💉

Both of his parents are health tested through the Orthopedic Foundation and cleared for over 250 different genetic conditions. He also has some nice champions in his pedigree. 🥇

Raised inside around children, other dogs, and cats, Marmalade loves everyone he meets. With his gentle temperament and love for the water, he's the perfect companion for fun-filled adventures and cozy cuddle sessions. ♥️

Between the Disney and Breakfast litters, we were blessed with an abundance of boys—11 in total! And yes, I bottle-fed every single one of them! 🤪 With so many pups, we ended up with more boys than families on our waiting list, leaving us with some adorable little boys still looking for their forever homes.

We are now down to our last little guy, and he is absolutely precious. This litter is the perfect blend of Bonnie and Fred, resulting in very clever pups with sweet and gentle dispositions. He has been showered with extra love from us and I’ve loved the extra time we’ve had with him, but it’s time for him to find his forever home ❤️

I promise you, it is not an easy way to make a quick buck if you are doing it ethically. I actually think $5 an hour is a generous guess!

“Why do you charge so much for your puppies?”

This is a question quality breeders are used to hearing. I’ve heard some variation of it a few times recently. For the purposes of answering this question, I went back several years to look at the last 10 litters we’ve produced, which included 48 live puppies (3 of which we kept). The average cost was about $2000.

“Wow,” you must be thinking, “45 x $2000! That’s an easy $90K. Maybe I want to start breeding dogs.” Let me fill in the story, starting with some the expenses associated with these 48 puppies:

• 4 c-sections
• 1 spay
• 28 progesterone tests
• 13 x-rays
• 1 ultrasound
• 2 emergency visits to the vet
• 1 entire litter lost to Canine Herpes virus
• 2 necropsies on dead puppies
• 5 titer tests from the Ohio Dept. of Agriculture for CHV
• 5 stud fees
• 26 artificial insemination kits
• 144 puppy dewormings (Pyrantel)
• 48 preventative treatments for coccidia (Marquis)
• 288 doses of Fenbendazole for deworming and giardia prevention
• 48 rounds of first shots (distemper, adenovirus, parvo, parainfluenza)
• 48 microchips
• 576 (approx.) doses of probiotics
• 48 AKC registrations and puppy packets
• 84 heartworm preventative doses for adults
• Dozens of genetic tests on the adults
• OFA certifications on hips, elbows, eyes, and hearts
• Vaccinations, dewormings, and pro-biotics for adults
• Dogfood for adults and puppies
• Misc. kennel supplies: e.g., shampoo, heating pads, whelping supplies, chew toys, dog bowls, training supplies, squeegees, disinfectants, etc.
• Hundreds if not thousands of miles on our vehicles for trips to the vet

I’m not even counting the expenses to keep the kennels heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer. I’m sure I’m missing a lot of other expenses (like our website- just thought of that). Based on what’s listed above and some quick math, our estimated costs for these expenses come in well over $30K. It’s not unheard of for us to actually lose money on a litter that we’ve spent countless hours with for 8 weeks. Other breeders have experienced this as well. This is our labor of love for the Labrador breed. It comes with the territory, so we aren’t complaining. Based on the profit we claimed on our most recent tax return (2023) divided by the estimated number of hours we spent that year—are you ready for this?—we made a little over $5 an hour. (To be honest, we had an unusually high number of expenses in 2023, so it doesn’t quite represent the norm.)

“Why do we charge so much?” I really don’t mind the question, but it’s one that is hard to adequately answer over the phone in a sentence or two. The short answer is that you get what you pay for. Quality breeders do not cut corners. And that’s a big part of the reason why a quality Labrador costs $2000-3000 here in the Midwest (and substantially more on the coasts).

Recently, I was asked why some of our puppies are smaller compared to the thick, hearty pups we've had in previous litters. This led to questions about whether these smaller pups would stay tiny. The answer is no—they will grow to be just as big and beautiful as our other dogs. Occasionally, we have preemie puppies who need a bit more care and just like with human babies, they can take a little longer to catch up.

We had two back-to-back litters of tiny puppies that needed round-the-clock bottle feeding. These pups had a rough start in life, and despite my best efforts, bottle-fed puppies typically don't grow as thick as those who nurse directly from their mother. However, with plenty of TLC and some extra time to catch up, they are now right on track. It warms my heart to see how well they are all doing now.

Just look at Duke and Toby (Lotso and Simba) from our Disney Litter, some of our tiny pups that aren’t so little anymore! 😍
