Please make sure all your furbabies are up to date on their flea and tick preventative. Ticks are very bad this year! We are finding them on most dogs. They can carry a variety of diseases that can really hurt your pup. If you walk your dog, in a park or wooded area especially, make sure to check them over for ticks.

We lost one of our beloved Barney's pups. Truffle has been coming to see us for almost 18 years! We have watched her grow from an adorable little pup to a beautiful little lady. She will be so missed.

Some members of our extended Barney's family is in need if anyone can help. She was lost in the woods for days trying to find her beloved pups. Distemper is another vaccination we require. This virus is a highly contagious airborne disease. Distemper affects many systems in a dog, including the nervous system and can cause neurological signs. There is no cure for distemper and it can be fatal, especially for puppies. We want to take every precaution necessary for the protection of every furbaby that comes to visit us.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that can be fatal to dogs if left untreated . Parvo cases have been on the rise for the last few years. Puppies and kittens are most susceptible. Pets from other areas of the country are coming here to find their furever homes. This does unfortunately put our pups more at risk.
Our facility requires the distemper combo vaccination which includes the parvovirus vaccine to protect all the pups in our care to the best of our ability.

This is an example of why we do not recommend cutting down your double coated dogs. These are all pomeranians. The first two are poms that are in full coat and never been cut down. Their fur is very healthy and full. The second is a pom that has been cut down multiple times. She is very cute but the coat is becoming damaged. The longer guard hairs are not growing back and the under coat is not shedding healthily. The final picture is a pom that has developed alopecia from being constantly cut down and the coat is now damaged and will not grow back properly.
There are other health concerns that can cause alopecia such as thyroid problems, immune disorders, etc. If your dog is experiencing hair loss we recommend consulting to your vet to make sure your baby has no underlying health concerns.

Should I shave my double coated dog for the summer?
We do not recommend it. A dog's well maintained coat helps to insulate and protect them. This helps your pup to regulate their body temperature in the heat and cold. Their fur also helps protect them from the sun and parasites. We recommend a good deshedding treatment and trimming your pup's fur off the ground. This will keep them protected and comfortable during the hot months.
There are some exceptions to this though. If your pup is matted then shaving them down is the most humane thing for them.

Don't shave your dog, as it might make them hotter in summer and creates health risks. Instead, try these grooming and safety tips to keep them cool.
