Using management is one of the easiest ways to prevent unwanted behaviors, and it’s a huge part of any solid training plan. Think of it like this: practice makes perfect… even when it’s the stuff we don’t want. If your dog keeps getting chances to rehearse a behavior you’re trying to get rid of, that behavior is only going to get stronger.

Management helps us hit pause on those habits. That might mean using baby gates, leashes, crates, closed doors, or changing the environment so your dog can’t keep practicing the unwanted behavior in the first place.

Then, once we’ve stopped the rehearsals, we can focus on teaching an incompatible behavior—something your dog can do instead that naturally replaces the old habit. That’s where the real training magic happens.

Keep your dog from practicing what you don’t want, set them up for success with what you do want, and everything gets a whole lot easier.

Adorable Joan is a 9-month-old, 25 #, Border Collie mix. She is a wonderful blend of sweetness, playfulness, and eager-to-please charm. She quickly earned the nickname June Bug thanks to her bright, cheerful spirit. She’s joyful without being overwhelming: cuddly when you want company, playful when you invite it, and content to settle quietly when the day slows down.

Joan loves a good play session with other dogs and time with her Benebone chew toy. She would enjoy a doggie sibling, but it’s not a requirement - she’s capable of thriving as the sole canine star of the household. Based on her gentle disposition, she would likely do well with respectful older children. We’re not sure what she would think of cats.

With a medium energy level, Joan is a perfect companion for an active family who likes to include their dog in regular exercise. When nothing is happening around her, she simply settles for a rest. She would love a fenced yard and could also live in a home with people that know how to keep dogs safe on leash.

Speaking of leashes, walking with one is new for this youngster; she’s getting better all the time. She’s a smart cookie who loves to learn new skills with patient, positive guidance. Obedience classes with her new family will help ensure she develops nice manners and understand household rules.

Joan is easy to live with: she is housebroken, sleeps quietly in her crate, and we have yet to hear her bark while with us (even when her canine foster siblings have something to say). She is friendly in new environments, happily meeting new friends during a recent vet visit.

If you’re a kind, confident leader that loves to spend time with smart dogs that enjoy being part of everyday family life, Joan could be a perfect fit. APPLY to adopt her at hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt

Joan is being fostered in Center City, MN.

APPLY TO ADOPT Joan at hoabcr.org/how-to-adopt

As a foster-based rescue, we do not have a central facility to visit. Meet and greets with specific dogs are arranged once your adoption application (not an inquiry through Petfinder) has been received, processed, and approved. We are located in Minnesota and adopt to an area 400 miles from Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Joan's adoption fee is $450 + MN sales tax. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on age-appropriate vaccines. All of our dogs go to their new homes with a collar and harness, leash, starter food, blanket, favorite toys & treats. They are current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

Mini Aussie/Wi

Our 2.5 year old Ruby is loving this beautiful warm up weather! This beauty was surrendered to us after serving a quarantine sentence for a bite...now, as scary as that sounds, she is not an aggressive girl. She got loose in her neighborhood, had an altercation with a utility worker, and she acted out on a whim. Her previous humans were heart broken, shocked, and not prepared to even give her up. It was ordered by the trailer park they reside in... Ok...now what she needs is a mini aussie loving home that simply understands her need to utilize her energy, and let her live the aussie life! Room to run safely! She loves other dogs, kids. Now she may be skiddish with men (obviously this happened) seriously, shes a delight here! If you love mini aussies, this 30 pound princess is ready to steal your heart! A fenced in yard would be IDEAL. Click here to apply!
