Hey there, fellow pet parents! 🐾 As we approach mid summer, lets talk about those unwelcome summer guests: fleas and ticks. 😷‍♂️🦠 These tiny critters might be small, but they can cause big problems for our furry friends.

Why are fleas and ticks such a big deal?

Itching and Irritation: Flea bites can make your pet miserable, leading to lots of scratching and skin infections. Ticks can also cause discomfort, but it's the diseases they carry that are the real danger.

Disease Risks: Ticks are vectors for scary diseases like Lyme, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis. These can make your pet very sick and even be life-threatening. Fleas can transmit tapeworms and, in severe cases, even cause anemia from blood loss.

Year-Round Threat: Even though we think of fleas and ticks as a summer problem, they can be present 12 months a year in many parts of the country. And, with climate change, these pests are becoming a bigger and bigger problem.

So, what can you do to protect your pet?

Medication is Key: Topical treatments, oral meds, and collars can all be effective. Talk to your vet to decide what's best for your pet. Some preventatives even guard against heartworms and intestinal parasites too.

Regular Checks: After spending time outdoors, always inspect your pet for ticks. Know what you're looking for - they can be as small as a freckle. If you find a tick, remove it right away!

Keep it Clean: Regular baths and brushing can help keep fleas at bay. Wash your pet's bedding often and vacuum your home, especially areas where they hang out.

Landscape Wisely: Keeping your yard clean and cutting back long grass and brush can make it less welcoming to fleas and ticks.

Don't let fleas and ticks ruin your pet's summer! Stay vigilant, use preventatives, and always reach out to your vet with questions. At Rancocas Veterinary Clinic, we're here to help your pet live their best, healthiest life.

Happy World Snake Day, everyone! 🐍🐍Because who doesn't love a good snake story... as long as it's not about the one you found in your basement.

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Snakes?! In NJ?! But we're a Garden State, not a Swamp State!" Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but those hiss-terical creatures are more common than you think. Especially if you're wandering around the Pine Barrens, where the only thing more plentiful than the snakes are the "I'm not lost, I'm just exploring" hikers.

So, who are the ssss-stars of our NJ snake show?

Garter Snakes: The squirrels of the snake world. They're everywhere, and about as threatening as a toddler with a water gun. (Pro tip: if you see one, just step around it. They're harmless and actually pretty helpful, like that one neighbor who always shovels your sidewalk.)

Rat Snakes: Because what's more NJ than a snake named after our favorite rodent? They're like the snakes you're most likely to find in your shed, going, "Uh, I was just... uh... looking for a rat... yeah, that's it." (Safety tip: if you see one, slowly back away while saying, "Uh, I think the rats are... uh... on the other side of the house.")

Copperheads: The rockstars of the NJ snake world. Everyone's heard of them, few have actually seen them, and meeting one in person is like meeting Springsteen – it's a real Jersey experience. (Super important safety tip: if you see a copperhead, freeze. No, really, freeze. Then slowly back away while saying, "It's okay, little guy, you can have New Jersey. I'm good.")

But seriously, if you see a snake:

Stay calm. No, really, stay calm. They're more afraid of you than you are of them.
Give them space. Think of it as a snake-sized personal bubble.
Don't try to be a snake whisperer. They don't appreciate the whole "down, boy" thing.

🚨It's National Pet Fire Safety Day!🚨

As pet parents, we want to protect our beloved companions from every danger. One often overlooked risk is fire. Today, let's talk about simple steps to keep your pets safe in case of a fire emergency.

1. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Stash carriers, leashes, food, water, and any crucial medication in an easy-to-grab spot. https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/pet-disaster-preparedness

2. Practice Escape Routes: Just like with your human family members, make sure your pets know the way out. Reward them with treats for following the routes. Also be sure to practice getting your feline friends safely and efficiently into cat carriers - we know that can sometimes be hard!

3. Prevent Accidents: Pets and open flames/flammable objects don't mix. Never leave candles or cooking unattended if your pet is in the room.

4. Microchip Your Pet: In the chaos of a fire, pets can bolt. A microchip greatly increases the chance you'll be reunited.

5. Inform Firefighters: Attach a pet alert window cling to a front window. This alerts firefighters that there are pets inside.

Spread the Word: Share this post to remind fellow pet owners to prioritize fire safety!

Important Pet Safety Alert for All Dog Owners.

If you're like us, you love those summer barbecues and picnics with your furry friend by your side. But there's a common summer danger we all need to be aware of: corn cobs.

It's tempting to let your dog have a few bites of that discarded corn cob. But this can be extremely dangerous. Here's why:

🚨Obstruction: Corn cobs can get stuck in your dog's intestines. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery.
🚨Toxicity: While corn is not toxic, the cob can expand in your dog's stomach and potentially rupture it.

So, what can you do?

Keep an eye on your trash: Make sure your dog can't get into any food scraps, especially corn cobs.
Choose dog-safe treats: There are plenty of yummy, safe options for your dog to enjoy.
Know the signs: If your dog is vomiting, lethargic, or has a loss of appetite, seek veterinary care right away.

Let's all keep our fur babies safe this summer!

Today's the day we celebrate our favorite "coworkers" - the ones who don't actually do any work but get all the treats! Happy Take Your Dog to Work Day! 🎉
Gibby, the ultimate office slacker and Dr. Riegel's best boy, is already hard at work demonstrating the best napping spots. But we need more furry "experts" showing us how it's done!
Snap a pic of your pup "on the job" and tag us! Are they "supervising" from your keyboard? "Conducting meetings" from the couch? Or just "researching" the best snack spots? We want to see how they're "contributing" to your productivity! 🐶️💼

👂PET PARENTS, LISTEN UP!👂
Summer crash landed with a heat advisory and it's hotter than a fresh cup of coffee on Monday morning. Keep your fur babies cool and safe with these tips from our friends at Rancocas Veterinary Associates.
🧊🧊HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE🧊🧊
Think of water as your pet's favorite summer cocktail. Keep those bowls full and ice cold!
🌳🌲SHADE: NATURE'S AIR CONDITIONING🌳🌲
Don't let your pets get overheated! Always provide a cool, shady spot for them to chill.
❎🚨🚘NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN THE CAR🚘🚨❎
This is a matter of life and death. Even with the windows open, the interior of a vehicle can become a deadly oven in mere minutes. Here's a shocking breakdown:30 minutes – Interior temperature increases by an average of one degree per minute.60 minutes – The average car is 43 degrees hotter than the outside temperature.
🕶PLAN AHEAD, STAY COOL🕶
Schedule outdoor adventures for cooler parts of the day. And leave your pets home when running errands, unless it's to the vet or a pet-friendly spot.

Happy Horseshoe Crab Day! 🌊

Did you know that hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs are removed from the oceans every year so their blood can be drained? Many of these amazing animals—one of the world’s oldest species—die during this process. Horseshoe crab blood is still being used to detect toxins in drugs and vaccines despite the fact that a synthetic alternative has been proven to detect toxins just as well—if not better—than horseshoe crab blood. 🧪🔬

As part of the Horseshoe Crab Recovery Coalition, we're urging companies to make the switch to this effective, humane alternative. Learn more & get involved at hscrabrecovery.org.

🕒 Job Type: Full-time
💰 Salary Range: Based on experience

📝 Job Description:
Do you have the courage to face a grumpy goat, the finesse to calm a nervous horse, and the ability to soothe an angry cat? Can you work in all weather conditions, from blazing sun to torrential rain, without losing your sense of humor? If so, you might just be our perfect match!

Daily Responsibilities May Include:

Assisting our veterinarian during surgeries, exams, and dental procedures both in the office and in the field (yes, that means house calls for cows!)
Monitoring vitals and administering anesthesia with surgical precision
Performing x-rays in the field and in the office (because sometimes the barn is our operating room)

Administering vaccines (don't worry, we've got treats to help)
Restraining animals (think of it as a workout with occasional mooing)

🏆 Qualifications:
**Minimum 2 years of experience as a small animal technician or assistant (we love our cats and dogs, too)
**Minimum 5 years of experience handling and understanding equine and livestock animals (if you can tell a sheep from a goat, you're halfway there)
**Ability to communicate effectively with both humans and animals (yes, even when they’re giving you the stink eye)
**Strong work ethic and a positive attitude (being able to laugh off the occasional animal mishap is a plus)
**Clean driving record (you'll be our road warrior)

🎁 Benefits:

Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
Opportunities for personal and professional development
Stylish uniforms provided (because we believe in looking good while saving the day)
