“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” Steve Jobs With an undergraduate degree and two Masters degrees, I went back to school in my mid-30’s to redo prerequisite classes and apply to Veterinary School which I knew was my true calling. With two toddlers (and one on the way), my family picked up and moved from New York City to St. Kitts so I could follow my dream. I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the age of 40. My kids grew up watching me going to classes, studying, and surviving clinics, they understand how hard I worked and what we sacrificed. And most important, they know that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams!

Copperhead season in SC is typically between May and August depending on the weather. Snakes like to hide in wooded areas with brush coverage, pine straw, tarps etc. They are not aggressive but dogs (and cats) are curious and that’s typically how they end up getting bit. If your dog gets bit by a copperhead, try to keep your pet as calm as possible and seek immediate veterinary care. While it can be scary please do not attempt any kind of at home first aid. Depending on the size of the dog, the symptoms and severity of the bite, antivenin may be required but it’s not always necessary. Cats are more resistant to the effects of the venom however they should also be seen by a veterinarian if they get bit. 🐍 🐕 🐈‍⬛

Scratching Chewing at their fur

Does my pet really need an annual wellness exam? Yes! Just like humans, annual wellness exams are important to assess the general health of your pet.
The doctor will perform a physical exam from head to tail, including checking teeth & gums, eyes, ears, and listening to their heart and lungs. These exams are vital to detect potential health issues early on. Our animals don’t always show signs of distress or discomfort however with an annual exam, your vet will be able to identify if there is an area of concern. ☎️ Call today to schedule your in-home 🏠wellness visit!

Does my pet really need to wear an e-collar? If that’s what the vet prescribed, then the answer is yes and let me explain why. E-collars, also referred to as the cone of shame, are utilized for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, post surgery to prevent your pet from getting to the incision site. If your pet licks or opens the incision site, the wound can become infected and you will likely have to go back for a re-closure of the incision which leads to longer healing time and additional costs. If your vet prescribes the e-collar, it’s important to listen and follow instructions for the best recovery for your pet. There are times when alternatives such as a surgical suit will work in place of the e-collar, please speak with your veterinarian to discuss the best option.

Temperatures are dropping across the US this week, that means frigid weather for all of us, including our pets! ❄️

If possible, keep all animals including outdoor cats indoors during severely cold weather. General rule is if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Limit your pets time outdoors, they should not be outside for more than 5 minutes if the temperature is below freezing. Bundle them up if the temps drop too low, keep them as warm as possible and dry their paws when they come inside. Make sure to check under your hood and car if you have stray cats in your area, they are looking for warmth.

Owners of other pets including chickens, horses, and livestock should also take caution to ensure they have access to an indoor shelter with insulation. Stay safe and stay warm!

As you prepare for the holidays, it’s important to highlight some potential hazards to your feline friend. 🐈

Cats are curious creatures, often enticed by the bright lights, shiny ornaments and ribbons dangling. Remember to secure your Christmas tree, and use shatterproof ornaments. Keep all tinsel, ribbon, and string away from cats as it can cause serious blockages if ingested. Never leave lit candles unattended, they can easily be knocked over by a pouncing playful cat. Holiday plants such as poinsettias, some types of mistletoe and holly can be toxic to cats if ingested, and important to note that any plants belonging to the lily family are highly toxic to cats. We hope you have a safe and healthy holiday celebration!

Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is more prevalently seen around thanksgiving from dogs eating table scraps. Remember dogs have very specific dietary requirements and cannot process food the same as humans. Try to avoid feeding your pets from the table.

If your dog exhibits these signs, please seek Veterinary care:
Lethargy
Vomiting
Diarrhea - sometimes with blood in it
Decreased Appetite
Painful Abdomen (Downward Dog Position)

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁

The holidays are almost here, and for many, that means traveling with pets! 🚗 🐾 Here are some tips to help reduce the travel stress:

✅ Make sure your pets are fully vaccinated!

✅ Ensure all pets have proper ID tags and microchips. Also important to confirm the microchip is registered with up to date contact information!

✅ Some pets experience motion sickness or have anxiety when they travel, speak with your vet to ensure you have proper anxiety or anti-nausea medications.

✅ Check to see if interstate or international travel requires them to have a health certificate on hand.

✅ Remember to pack plenty of food especially if they are on a prescribed diet plan.

✅ Build in plenty of time to stop for breaks and water. Enjoy your holiday travel plans!
