That means it is too humid for dogs to be outside for extended periods of time, that includes being at the beach or in cars unattended. They are more susceptible to heat stroke at these temps, brachycephalic breeds are at greater risk. Signs to look for include elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, abnormal gum color, lethargic or disoriented, seizures. If you think your pet is experiencing symptoms, please give us a call.

With two toddlers (and one on the way), my family picked up and moved from New York City to St. Kitts so I could follow my dream. I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the age of 40. My kids grew up watching me going to classes, studying, and surviving clinics, they understand how hard I worked and what we sacrificed. And most important, they know that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams!

Copperhead season in SC is typically between May and August depending on the weather. Snakes like to hide in wooded areas with brush coverage, pine straw, tarps etc. They are not aggressive but dogs (and cats) are curious and that’s typically how they end up getting bit. If your dog gets bit by a copperhead, try to keep your pet as calm as possible and seek immediate veterinary care. While it can be scary please do not attempt any kind of at home first aid. Depending on the size of the dog, the symptoms and severity of the bite, antivenin may be required but it’s not always necessary. Cats are more resistant to the effects of the venom however they should also be seen by a veterinarian if they get bit. 🐍 🐕 🐈‍⬛
