What do you think is the most common reason cats end up in shelters or returned to places that they are adopted from? Inappropriate elimination, whether it’s spraying, peeing outside of the box or p**ping outside of the box. This simple, bodily function lands many kitties in situations like abandonment, kill shelters or even euthanasia. Please don’t give up on your cat. There are not enough homes as it is, by trying to understand Cat behavior and work to solve the problem, you are actually saving a life. Here is a recap and some of the advice that we provide.
1. the first thing you need is a vet visit to rule out any health issues, health issues can lead to inappropriate elimination, many of these issues can be rectified with correct medication and advice from your vet. You can also try calming medications from your veterinarian, they are very inexpensive.
2. assess your litter box set up. Is there another cat in the house that’s resource guarding, is the litter box in the place that’s private? Don’t you like to p**p in private? Do you have a litter box on each level of your home? Cats live in the moment. They’re not going to make a great big effort to use a litter box unless it’s convenient, placement of litter box should be for the needs of the cat not for the convenience of the human. Try different materials, there’s all kinds of Litter products on the market from walnut shells to corn based like World’s Best that we use at our shelter. Maybe your cat scared of a closed box, try an open box. Maybe it’s too small, get a bigger one. Maybe they’re elderly and they’re having a hard time getting over high walls. They have litter boxes suitable for senior companions.
3. are you using the appropriate cleaners to clean areas that are soiled? Don’t use vinegar, don’t use bleach, use enzymatically based products. They are designed specifically to break down the crystals left behind in cat urine.
4. there are great products on the market, tools like Litter attractant, calming collars, hormone based plug-ins.
5. Reduce as much stress in the home as possible. Have you added a new family member whether human or furry? Have you moved things around in your home? Are you stressed out? Cats are sensitive beings. Can your cats see other cats outside the window? Observe, address and make positive changes.
Most important of all, please remember these are living beings and when you commit, they come with a lot of responsibility. And we get it, it’s so frustrating. I live with an inappropriate eliminator, (using Gabapentin now), some days I want to cry, instead, I am working through solutions. We, as caretakers need to watch the triggers, find solutions, and we need to do the best for our cats because they rely on us. You wouldn’t want anyone to give up on your life.

As you know, we absolutely love the specially abled kitties and we currently have two kitties that are tripods, one kitty that is partially blind and of course, our special guy Spot. Spot has been with us for over two years, and is an FIP cured kitty. Unfortunately he did have the neurological version which has left him incontinent, but, he does very well with washable diapers, and really needs to get out of living in a cage. And while of course he gets time out and exercise, it’s not the same as being in a loving home and part of the family. He is funny, playful, and sweet as apple pie. Please help us, help this very special guy find his forever home.

As we wrap up Giving Tuesday, Shrimps wanted to remind you that his life, like so many others, are saved only through your support. We raised about $300 today in donations and we thank every single person for your generosity, your shares and your love. Together, we do great things!
Giving Tuesday is the Purrfect day to give to your favorite non-profit shelter/rescue. What started as a dream almost eight years ago morphed into our little rescue, with a big impact. We have now adopted out over 1800 cats, fixed over 3000 cats, and we continue to strive to make a difference in the lives of rescue cats. From bottle feeding the most vulnerable, maintaining a cat food pantry, pulling medical cases from other shelters, providing valuable cat advice, to community outreach, holding 2 low cost s/n clinics each month, we do it ALL. There are so many behind the scenes actions, that few see. We take in the broken, the lost, the abandoned and we only do our life saving work with support from our community of feline fans. Our facility runs on sheer passion for living beings, whether two or four footed, and we do it because we care so very deeply, and we know kindness does truly make a difference. We know times are tough for everyone, and that every dollar counts, consider giving a donation this holiday season, for the gift that is truly priceless.

Adoption story number 1836 and 1837 is the story of two very popular brothers, Wheat and Flour. These boys were found by some of our very special kitty advocates who have fostered for us multiple times. These kittens were so popular that they each received a multitude of applications. Particularly for Kittens it is very important that they are adopted either in pairs or to a home with another kitty companion, which not only improves their social skills, but also their happiness. We are so excited that these brothers get to grow old together. Congratulations to Jessica, Wheat and Flour, we are looking forward to hearing great updates as these boys enjoy their new lives.
If you are looking for your own special kitty, we still have a ton of fully vetted kittens coming out of foster this week, so stop in and meet them!

Adoption story number 1835 is the last of the Aristocats, Talouse. This sweet baby came to us with her mom and siblings who were living in an unsafe location. After spending sometime in a couple of our experienced foster homes, all the kitties were vetted and came in for adoption. Mikyah was looking for the perfect kitty to complete her home and family, when Talouse caught her eye and heart. Congratulations to both ladies, we wish you many happy years together!

Adoption story number 1834, it is truly one of the most gorgeous kitties to hit the Cat lounge, Frankenstein! This handsome boy actually came through one of our spay and neuter clinics as a barn kitty. While prepping him for surgery, we realized he is polydactyl, and he had quite the infected toe. Polydactyl kitties, depending on how their feet are structured can be prone to issues that need to be monitored. When the owners came to pick him up, we asked if there was anyway we could bring him directly into our program so that he could be an indoor kitty, as his personality is just lovely, and his feet could be monitored safely. And they agreed! Frankenstein was a very popular dude while he was in our care and after reviewing several adoption applications, we found the perfect fit. Congratulations to Matthew and Frankenstein. We are grateful that our gentle Floof found the perfect home.

Adoption story number 1833 is gorgeous Mary Jane! This pretty girl was found by a wonderful family that is consistently advocating for the kitties. They were able to provide a safe space for her and her babies until they could go through our vetting process to find their forever homes. Mary Jane is personality plus and a very outgoing girl, she even hung out at PetSmart for a while waiting to catch someone’s eye. Audrey came in for a visit, looking specifically for a friend for her current seven year-old kitty and Mary Jane won the Cat lottery. We absolutely love when our adult kitties find forever homes even while they are surrounded by a multitude of kittens. Congratulations to both ladies, we are so happy this mama kitty found her forever home and we look forward to some fabulous updates.

Every rescue kitty has a story to tell, and adoption story number 1832, for Onyx is a doozy. A couple months ago, right at the end of the day I received a phone call where the caller was quite hysterical and in obvious distress. We get a multitude of requests for help EVERY day and like every shelter, we are consistently full. After explaining for at least the 10th time that day that we weren’t doing any intakes, the call ended, but my brain did not quit worrying. After less than five minutes, my intuition pressing for action, I called the person back for more details. They had been caring for this big, gorgeous, friendly stray kitty for sometime, and the neighbor was threatening to “dispose” of him, and the neighbor was getting quite serious and quite vicious. So we did what we’ve done many, many times, despite not having an inch of room to wiggle, we did an emergency intake to save his life.
One of our consistent visitors came for a visit and immediately fell in love with this giant gentle boy who definitely is one of the biggest kitties we have rescued. Onyx is basically the perfect gentleman, and we are so very grateful to be part of his journey to safety and into a life where he will be truly cherished and loved. Congratulations to Elowen and Onyx. We truly believe this was a match made in heaven.

What is Karma Kat Cafe?

I wanted to create a community setting, where humans and cats can interact in a serene atmosphere, and increase the odds of successful adoptions. By partnering with local shelters and rescues, we have created a valuable meeting space, and we provide an enriching, safe space for homeless cats. All adoptable cats are spayed or neutered and have required vaccinations.

How it works

  • 1. On-line reservations are available for an hourly fee. Walk-ins will are available, when slots are open. We have to maintain a purrfect cat-to-human ratio, so that everyone is comfortable.
