Pia is a 1 year old Cane Corso that we’ve done one on one sessions with and is now here for our board and train program to work through some of her intense reactivity and aggression issues. Our first couple of days consisted of her wearing a muzzle for safety to now advancing onto some funner things to help build on our relationship. Understanding the value of using food can take you a long way in training especially with reactivity. Understanding the difference between bribing and rewarding can dictate your expectations. Chet is used to lunging, barking, and redirecting on the leash and his owners at the sight of another dog. This is an exercise I like to use to build up expectations and implement our reward system. Expectation here, is calmness and prioritizing me over the dogs by giving me attention. I don't want to bribe Chet by putting food in his face to focus on me, instead I want him to make the choice to give me attention. I want him to simply pay me attention and realize the reward is with me. Reward your dog to encourage good behavior. FIRST 24 HOURS WITH MORTON WERE EVERYWHERE. WE SPENT THE FIRST HOUR TRYING TO GET HIM IN THE CRATE, WHICH HE HAS NEVER LEARNED HOW TO ENJOY. ANYTIME WORK LITTLE TO NO PRESSURE OF GETTING NEAR THE CRATE HE WOULD GET NERVOUS AND DEFECATE. WE FINALLY GOT HIM IN, COVERED HIS CRATE AND LET HIM DECOMPRESS THE REST OF THE DAY. HE WAS QUIET THE ENTIRE TIME. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK HIM FOR A 2 MILE WALK WHERE WE ENCOUNTERED A CONSTRUCTION WORKER WHO TALKED TO US FOR A FEW MINUTES. MORTON TRIED GETTING COMFORTABLE BY BACKING INTO AND RESTING ON MY LEGS. I DIDN’T ALLOW IT, INSTEAD FOR COMFORT, I STEPPED IN FRONT OF HIM TO ALLEVIATE ANY UNWANTED PRESSURE FROM THE MAN. WE EXPLORED A FIELD. RAN A BIT. WALKED A BIT. THEN WENT BACK IN WHERE THERE WAS STILL RESISTANCE GOING IN THE CRATE BUT MORE INTEREST IN GOING NEAR AND INSIDE ON HIS OWN. ONLY TWO PAIR OF HANDS WERE NEEDED. YOU CAN TELL HE LACKS A TON OF CONFIDENCE AND IS GOING TO NEED A LOT GOING FORWARD. YESTERDAY WAS POSITIVE. LET'S SEE WHAT TODAY BRINGS.
