During the blockade, they evacuated the girl from Leningrad. Her name was Lenochka. She forgot her last name because she was very small. She lost her entire family: mother, father, grandmother and older brother.

She was found by a special brigade during the blockade and severe winter, they went to apartments and looked for children whose parents had died or disappeared.

And then they found Lenočka and evacuated it. She didn't remember how she got into the orphanage, she was so tiny. She was so exhausted and didn't want to eat anymore.

She was lying in her bed, or sitting on a chair by the stove. She was scared and just kept silent. They thought they were going to die. Many evacuated children have already died from severe exhaustion, not having the strength to eat and live.

But one day, the one-legged fireman Kolja, about twenty years old, made her a doll out of an old towel. Somehow he cut, folded and sewed. He drew eyes and lips with a pencil.

He gave Lenočka the doll and said to her very seriously: "You, Lenochka , take good care of this doll. Teach her to eat. Now you are her mother. And take good care of her. Look at her Lenočka, she is so sick and hungry. She doesn't even crying!".

Lenochka took the doll. She started rocking her and beating her. She fed the doll porridge for lunch, whispering something flattering to it. And Lenochka also started eating. Lenochka came to life. Because she realized that she should not die, she should take care of the doll. When you have someone to take care of, that's a huge reason to fight to live.

When she grew up, she became a nurse and lived to a ripe old age. Her hands were always busy and her heart full.

This hits the nail on the head ….

Borrowed from another breeder:

The hardest part of breeding isn't the lack of sleep, the constant worry during pregnancy and then in those first few hours, days or weeks. It's not the time put into cleaning, socializing, evaluating temperaments or finding good homes. The hardest part is the last hug and kiss you have go give them when you tell them they are the best puppy before you send them off on their new adventure. Do they know you love them? Do they know you chose the very very best home you could for them where they would be loved and have fun? Do they forgive you for not keeping them? No matter how much you know that puppy will be loved and cared for in its new home, it breaks your heart a little every time one of them has to leave.

So, for those who ask a breeder "how can you let them go?" Or "don't you cry when they leave?" the answer is yes, I've cried every time a puppy leaves. I raise puppies because I love it. I do it because I want my breeds to continue and to be healthy, functional, animals with solid conformation and good temperaments. I do it because there ARE great homes looking for great dogs and it's not fair to anyone to keep them all here (much as I'd like to sometimes).

So, the next time you pick up your puppy from their breeder, know what you're really taking is a piece of their heart, and make sure you take the very best care of it.
