As the weather cools down, it’s easy to forget about flea, tick, and heartworm prevention — but these pests stay active well into fall (and even all winter in recent years).

🚨 Leptospirosis Reminder 🚨

We’ve been seeing more cases of Leptospirosis reported in the Chicago area recently. Lepto is a serious bacterial disease that spreads through the urine of infected wildlife and can be picked up by dogs from puddles, standing water, or even damp soil — especially after heavy rain.

💉 The good news: There’s a safe and effective vaccine that helps protect your dog (and you — since Lepto can spread to humans).

If your dog isn’t up to date on their Leptospirosis vaccine, now’s the time to schedule an appointment.

Meet Rocky, our technician Emma’s kitty, who was in for his neuter procedure this week. He did absolutely amazing and is already back to being his happy, playful self. 🐱

🐾 Team Training with Maple 🐾

Amelia’s cattle dog, Maple, came to work with her today. She helped our new technician practice safe and gentle patient handling. Maple was patient, cooperative, and made the training session go smoothly. And she had a great time running in the yard!

We appreciate her helping us continue to learn and provide the best care for our patients.

If you’ve ever been to Vernon Hills Animal Hospital, there’s a good chance you’ve met Nancy — and if you haven’t, you’ve definitely benefited from her incredible care behind the scenes. ❤️

Nancy has been with us for decades (yes, decades) and is our longest-working licensed veterinary technician with an unmatched knowledge base. She’s here every single day, never calls off, and somehow still finds time to pick up extra shifts. 💪🐶🐱

When she’s not caring for our patients, Nancy loves spending time with her three-pound Pomeranian, Mr. Jagger — whether it’s going for walks along Lake Michigan or enjoying a relaxing day boating together. 🚤☀️🐾

Her dedication, compassion, and love for our patients (and their humans!) are truly one of the biggest reasons our hospital feels like home. We’re so lucky to have her on our team, and our patients are even luckier.
