*Covid-19 update: We have indefinitely postponed all indoor adoption events, so our animals are only available by appointment in Murphysboro, IL, at this time. The animals in our program are rescued from hazardous situations - whether that be neglectful households, raided puppy mills or over-crowded animal control facilities. We then quarantine them for health observation, complete their age-appro

priate healthcare, and find them the loving homes they deserve. Southern Illinois, and the surrounding areas, have major animal overpopulation issues that result in hundreds of animal deaths a week. MARS of Illinois hopes to alleviate some of the strain on animal control facilities by transporting adoptable animals out of the area to places where they have a chance at not just life, but a GOOD life!

Hi Friends,

We have held out making this announcement until the decision was final, but It is with great sadness we must formally announce that we are closing indefinitely.

As some of you may know, many rescues across the country are facing overwhelmingly high requests to take in animals/requests to return adopted pets (specifically ones that were adopted during the shut down in 2020), paired with extremely low adoption rates, creating a desperate situation for the rescue staff trying to accommodate these animals knowing they will be at the shelter for a much longer time than normal.

Being a very small rescue, we became overwhelmed very quickly and had to stop taking in any more animals back in June. Since then, adoptions also slowed to a halt, forcing some of the younger animals in our program to grow up in the shelter. Honestly, we have been struggling with funding since the shut down, but we kept going because there were animals that needed us, and we couldn't bare the thought of turning them away. We do our very best to give our animals as much attention and love as possible, but it doesn't compare to being with a family. Watching these animals grow up here was absolutely heartbreaking.

Over the next few months, we reduced adoption fees to the point they didn't even begin to cover the funds to keep our doors open in an effort to get the animals into loving homes. Our board members have been financially supporting the rescue since 2020, and it was to the point it became too much to bear without any adoption fees coming in. After the last 2 dogs in our program, who had been with us for 1 year and 1 1/2 years, finally found homes just a few weeks ago, we had to make the final decision to close our doors for a while.

Our rescue journey has been an overall wonderful and life-changing experience for us, and we are so grateful for our adopters, sponsors and supporters. This is not goodbye forever, just for now.

Sincerely,
Your Friends at MARS of Illinois

Our Story

We are a small, no-kill shelter, located in southern Illinois. We travel all over Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky to offer assistance to as many animals as possible. The animals in our program are rescued from hazardous situations - whether that be neglectful or abusive homes, hoarding situations, or over-crowded animal control facilities and humane societies. We quarantine all animals for health observation, provide up-to-date medical care and address any health issues, then make them available in areas that have more adopters, like Champaign.

Our program focuses mainly on Moms with babies and young puppies, so our team is highly trained in animal care and health. We keep all puppies until they have received all 3 “puppy shots”, or age appropriate vaccines for older puppies and adults. We have a newly remodeled in-house ICU where major medical needs can be addressed immediately by our team.

All of our animals are routinely screened for health issues and intestinal issues in efforts to reduce health risks not only for the animals in our shelter, but also to keep them healthy after adoption. While the background of many rescued pets is unknown, you can be assured that from the time they enter our program, all of their needs are met. Young puppies are kept at our shelter until they have all 3 puppy shots, and older puppies receive booster shots on a strict schedule. Mother dogs also receive individualized health care, vaccinations, Heartworm screening and prevention, and spay surgeries. Mother dogs usually spend around 3 months in our shelter, and during that time we work with them on leash training and potty training.

We also provide holistic treatments and natural supplements whenever possible to reduce stress and improve the immune system. We often use Chamomile tea compresses to soothe irritated eyes or skin in place of more harsh topical medications. We use a Chamomile and Lavender spray in our shelter and mist on towels and blankets to help stressed animals.
