🚨 **Abandoned Cat Alert** 🚨

Dear community,

Today, we had a heartbreaking incident at our clinic. A cat was abandoned at our front entrance, left in a carrier for over an hour. This poor cat, clearly terrified, was banging itself around trying to escape, and it was heart-wrenching to witness.

We have videos of the person and the car involved in this incident. It appears to be a young boy, who seems to be with an adult, as we can hear them talking and getting into a car. This is the second time we've seen this young man abandon a cat at our clinic. We believe that he might have been made to do this by an adult.

🔍 **We need your help**:
Please share this post. If you recognize the car or the young man, please let us know. However, we ask that all comments remain compassionate and non-judgmental. Our goal is to find a solution, not to shame anyone.

🙏 **Proper Way to Rehome Unwanted Pets**:
Abandoning a pet is not the right way to handle the situation. Here are some recommended steps:
1. **Foster through a Rescue**: The best option is to foster the cat through a rescue organization that can help find a new home.
2. **Find Another Foster**: If you cannot foster, try to find someone who can.
3. **Avoid Shelters if Possible**: Shelters expose animals to diseases and can be overcrowded. They are working on changing legislation, but many current laws date back to the 1950s, focusing solely on Rabies transmission to humans. It wasn't even imagined that they would be sheltering pets let alone adopting them out when our laws were made.

This is a community issue, and every one of us is a vital piece of the puzzle in addressing the overpopulation crisis. Let’s work together to find humane solutions for our furry friends.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

May 14 is National Disaster Animal Preparedness Day!
Follow these 6 steps to be “pet prepared” during an emergency
1. Include pets in your family emergency plan. Pre-determine how you would transport your pet in an evacuation and which boarding facility, shelter, friend, or relative would be able to take in your pet if necessary. Designate a neighbor to check in on and/or evacuate your pet in the event that you are not home when an emergency occurs. Display a notice in a visible part of your front door or window advising what pets live in the house.
2. Take your pets with you. If you need to evacuate your home, don’t leave your pets behind. Leaving an animal home alone could be dangerous, especially if it may take days or even weeks for your family to return to them.
3. If it’s safe for your family to stay at home, keep pets confined. Pets should remain indoors at all times. Keep pets separated in their own quiet space with plenty of accessible water.
4. Make your pet easy to ID. If you become separated from your pet, you’ll want to try and claim them as quickly as possible. Make sure that all identification tags are up-to-date and secured to your pet’s collar. Microchipping your pet is always a good idea and a fail-safe way to verify that you’re their owner. Also, keep a photo of you and your pet together handy to help others easily ID them.
5. Vaccinate your pets. Protect your pets from potential disease and illness in the event that you need to leave your pet at a boarding facility or shelter.
6. In the few days after a disaster, keep your pets indoors. Unfamiliar scents and sights may cause worry or confusion. Downed power lines, broken tree limbs, and displaced wild or domestic animals may pose a risk to your pet.

If an animal is in imminent danger, contact your local Animal Control Office or Police Department for possible assistance, as they may have quicker access to an emergency scene.

May 5th-11th is Puppy Mill Action Week! Puppy Mills are kennels for mass breeding baby dogs. They fall somewhere between dog factories and puppy farms. In these places, animals are treated as merchandise, their lives depend on their sale value. Puppies deemed worthless end up evicted, killed, or given to shelters that are already overcrowded with dogs in need of homes. Take this week to educate yourself on the subject and learn why these dog breeders need to be prevented from operating the way they currently do. If the seller doesn’t know or doesn’t want to show the puppy’s parents, and if you don’t have permission to see the kennel, be suspicious. You’re probably dealing with a dog raised in a puppy mill.

HOW TO OBSERVE PUPPY MILL ACTION WEEK
Sign the pledge
The Humane Society of the United States asks animal lovers to pledge not to buy anything from a store that sells puppies. Committing to this can decrease puppy sales, and eventually, put puppy mills out of business.

Support shelters or rescue centers
Shelters, and organizations dedicated to the rescue and welfare of animals, need all the help they can get. During Puppy Mill Action Week, they will be particularly active, so it is an ideal time to sign up as a volunteer or donate what you can at their fundraising events.

Spread the word and alert your community
Many people are unaware of what happens in puppy mills. Send messages to blogs or local newspapers and reaffirm the importance of the topic. Traditional advertising actions such as letters and pamphlets also help to spread the message.

The 2024 World Veterinary Day will be held on April 27. The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and Health for Animals announced that this year’s theme is “Veterinarians are essential health workers.” This day is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals, people, and the environment. We can't say enough about how amazing our doctors are. Dr. Daines, Dr. Kopecko, Dr. Virg, and Dr. Rezvan are so knowledgeable and caring. We are so lucky to have them and love them all!!!

Great information:

Let’s talk about male cat reproductive anatomy and cat 🏀🏀. Did you know a male cat can still reproduce for up to 6 weeks after a neuter? Its true! Even though the actual testicles that make s***m are gone, a cat can still have residual s***m inside its tubes waiting to impregnate a female much like a human male. Eventually the s***m will either have been ‘used’ or will die off in the tubes and the cats will be sterile. It will also take several weeks for the testosterone to leave its body and for the urine smell to improve. Additionally, even after a neuter, it may still appear as though your cat still has testicles inside the sc***um if the testicles had become large. A gentle touch to the sc***um will reveal an empty sac.

Also, a not-so-fun fact, is intact cats have barbs on their pen*ses which helps them anchor inside the female during mating. Hence, the screaming that goes on. The barbs scraping also stimulate the female to drop eggs. A male cat loses the barbs a few weeks after a neuter. These barbs are a helpful visual to let your vet know if a cat is neutered or is cryptorchid. This condition happens when the testicles did not drop and the vet will have to go into their abdomen to remove the testicles. If the sac is empty, the vet vet will check for those barbs. No barbs means the cat is fixed. If the cat has barbs and an empty sac the cat is cryptorchid.

Neutering a male will prevent testicular cancer and help you have a healthy relaxed and happy cat. Far too often cats are thrown outside when they reach sexual maturity and start smelling foul or spraying your home. A simple solution is neutering by 4 months. A neuter prevents so many problems including shelter overcrowding. We spay and neuter at 2months/2 pounds or as soon as we can get our paws on them if they are older than 2 months.

April is – and with instances on the rise – we are sharing what you need to know as a pet owner!

Heartworms are life-threatening parasites, transmitted by mosquitoes, that can live in your pet’s system and can lead to heart failure, liver damage, or worse. Heartworm disease is 100% preventable. Annual testing and year-round prevention can provide a lifetime of protection.

If your pet is due for their annual heartworm test or needs a refill on prevention, contact us today! For more info on heartworms, click here: https://bit.ly/3Tpuo7L
