Good info to know

Dogs need space when enjoying their meals or yummy treats.

Unsteady and unpredictable toddlers and children should not have access to their dog while they’re eating. Using a gate or having a dining station in a separated room will allow safety and stress free dining for your pup.

Having this space set up for your dog if you’re having a gathering at your house with adults, is still just as important as if you were setting up for toddlers and babies in your home. It applies to us adults too!

⚠️Even if your dog tolerates their familiar adults taking food, toys, high value treats or bones away DO NOT expect them to behave the same with other dogs, children or unfamiliar adults. How would you feel if a stranger came up to your dining table and took a bite of your food? Uncomfortable, Angry, Scared?

❗Give dogs space! Stay out of their face!
❗Dogs with a Bone....Leave them alone!

If the item is dangerous or needs to be removed, use your head and make an exchange instead! We encourage everyone to teach and practice "leave it" before you need it.

Give yourself permission to opt out sometimes! 📣

It’s okay if you rather be fully present at your cousin’s birthday party rather than constantly be watching that your dog doesn’t get uncomfortable by the 20 people partying in the yard.

It’s okay if you leave your dog at home while you go to the outdoor cafe with your friend rather than try to force them to lie down on a mat for an hour with commotion all around them.

It’s okay if you rather keep your dog in your bedroom while you have a backyard BBQ so they can be more relaxed and calm, and you won’t have to worry about them investigating all the food on the tables.

There are certainly times to try to work with your dog and train, but there’s no need to put so much pressure on ourselves and our dogs by trying to include them in everything we do, especially if it causes them (or ourselves) stress.

So here’s your permission to opt out sometimes. ✨

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
Do we like everyone we meet? Do we all enjoy socialising and spending time with lots of different people? I certainly don’t and refer to myself as a “caninetrovert” – a person that much prefers to spend time with dogs rather than people. Maybe I’m a little different to the “norm”, but be that as it may, we are all individuals with different personality styles and social preferences.

Some of us are extroverts, gaining energy from interacting with people; some of us introverts, who find people draining and need alone time to recharge our social batteries and some of us are somewhere in between.

If we acknowledge that we are all different in this way, we also need to acknowledge and accept that our dogs are similar.

They could be overly affectionate or fiercely independent, approachable or nervous, energetic or laid back, confident or cautious, sociable, tolerant, selective or reactive.

We may be really disappointed when our dogs turn out not to be the socialite we expected them to be.

Some may even see this as a behaviour problem that needs to be “fixed”. Sometimes it can be improved, especially if the cause is from a negative experience, but genetics, breed tendencies, individual personalities, health and age all contribute to tolerance levels and sociability.

Accept your dog for who they are, allow them to choose whether they want to be sociable or not, respect their choices and never force an interaction that your dog is not comfortable with.

Remember we do not like loud noises from the fireworks (some fur people don’t either)💥 Please be considerate ❤️🤍💙❤️🤍💙❤️🤍...
