Pictures from our Tuesday Adventure. The pack loved the cooler temps and the new trail this morning and enjoyed every second of the brief rain and then plentiful sunshine as they zoomed around the trails! Here's to the good days! ❤️

Let's Talk About Cheatgrass

What is it: Cheatgrass is an invasive plant in Idaho that was introduced around the 1800s. It is now one of the most significant invasive w**ds in the Treasure Valley. Grass awns from cheatgrass and foxtails can attach to dogs' fur as they are running or walking in the grass and the sharp barbs can become lodged in the skin, or even the ears, nose, throat, or other parts of the body and can lead to inflammation, infection, and pain.

Signs of cheatgrass embedment in dogs include: Excessive shaking of the head or sneezing. Swelling, discharge, limping. Excessive licking, chewing, or pawing.

What we do: Unfortunately there is no way to avoid cheatgrass and foxtails while hiking in our beautiful Treasure Valley, especially for pups that like to blaze their own trails instead of staying on the established path. This w**d is everywhere and has become as much a part of our landscape as sage and coniferous trees. Especially in the summer months when the heat limits our trail choices to those near water, avoiding this pesky w**d is next to impossible. We make sure at the end of each Adventure to check our hikers feet, noses, and ears for cheatgrass awns and if we notice that a pup has awns stuck to their fur, we do our best to brush them out.

What can you do: There are products available on the market like OutFox pet shields that essentially act as a screen to protect your dog's face and ears from awns. Jumbo cotton balls placed in the ears can help to keep awns from penetrating the ear canal. We recommend a good brush out after every hike, especially for longer haired dogs during spring and summer months and if possible, a short hair cut makes a big difference as well. There are certain coat types much more likely to attract awns from plants and those include long, soft, fluffy cotton type coats. Our poodle mix Izzie is a perfect example of a coat type that attracts grass awns like velcro. A thorough brush out after every hike is recommended for dogs with coat types like Izzie.

Our hikers safety is our number priority! We do everything possible to keep an eye on our pack's condition. While we can't eliminate the risks of cheatgrass, we do everything in our power to minimize it. Unfortunately adventuring outdoors can never be risk free, but with proper safety precautions we believe the small risks are worth the rewards for our pups' health and mental stimulation.

As a reminder, all new Adventurers start out on a long-line so we can make sure they are comfortable and understand the process. We make sure they are responding to recall and that they are comfortable around the other dogs in the group before we drop the long-line and then the dogs just drag it behind them for a few trips to help reinforce recall when needed and keep everyone safe and happy!

05/31/2024

We can't forget about our after-hike snack time! Everyone enjoys the beef liver (especially Goose as you'll see from the video. He'll even take some fingers with it! 🤣) We loved having our new Adventurers, Bowzer and Margie, with us on their first hike today! We'd love to see your pup out with us soon too! Reach out anytime or visit us on our website www.idahounddogs.com to learn more or to set up your pup's free meet and greet!

The pups had a blast on this beautiful Friday hike out at Lucky Peak! The weather was absolutely perfect for our two new Adventurers, Margie and Bowzer. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful temps, playing in the stream, chasing crickets and each other and just soaking up the sun. We are living for these first glimpses of summer! We'd love to get your pup out on the trail too! Message us anytime with questions or to learn more or visit us on our website www.idahounddogs.com to set up your dog's meet and greet!

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Sometimes we get asked how we know new dogs won't immediately take off once they are on the trail. Every dog is started out on a long line to make sure they are comfortable, responding to recall, and learning the routine. Your dog's safety is our number one priority! We are trained in pet first aid and CPR in case of emergency and have over 20 years combined experience in dog handling/training. We utilize different training tools like whistles, clickers, treats, and remote trainers to help keep our Adventurers safe and happy on their hikes. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out anytime!

We decided to check out a new trail. This beautiful weather had the dogs roaring to go play! They loved chasing all the grasshoppers and butterflies, playing in the stream, and chasing each other through the tall grass. It's good for the soul to see such happy dogs. ♥️ After our 3 mile hike, the pups decided to snooze on the trip home (after their post-hike snacks of course! 😆)

This is amazing! Beer, dogs, and a tired, happy pup?! We can't think of a better combo.
