Check out all these great pups from our Week 4 Thursday evening class! Everyone is prepping for graduation in the coming weeks, and all have improved a ton. Link especially has made the biggest turnaround, when I first met him he was uncontrollably barking at everything soon as he saw something in the environment. Today he is one of the best in the class! Great job to everyone and thanks to Julie, Christina, & Dan for lending me a hand yesterday. 2 more weeks until graduation 🐾

Congratulations to all of these amazing pups & their dedicated owners for graduating basic obedience today! This class was a lot of fun and these dogs were really on their A game, with Nico especially winning MVP. Thank you to all in the class for sticking with me and making it such a great class, I appreciate you! 🐾

Thank you Julie & Sit Happens K-9 Academy LLC for being such a big help as well!

Let's talk about bringing in a new dog to your home. Whether you have other animals or not, these tips are strongly advised. If you do have other animals in the home, especially multiple dogs, I consider these non-negotiable if you want to maximize long-term success.

✔️Keep all dogs on leash for the first few weeks and introduce slowly. That goes for in the home too especially. Neutral territory walks, leash walks in yard, etc. all help the dogs slowly get used to each other, rather rolling the dice and seeing what happens. You must control the experience and interactions!

✔️All resources should be separated, even if your current animals have shared nicely. That means feeding your dogs in their own area (crate, separate room, etc.) as well as designated 1 on 1 toy time. Bones, toys, food bowls, etc. should all be up and away when dogs are together.

✔️Crate training is a must. Being able to keep the crates somewhat nearby each other will help the dogs get used to one another while in their safe space. Crate training also helps the dogs have time to decompress, as well as give you time to relax and bring them back out on leashes when you're ready.

✔️Never leave the dogs unattended, whether it be you're just leaving the room for a few minutes, or leaving the house for a few hours, it is not worth the risk.

✔️Most importantly, consider your current dogs before adopting or purchasing a puppy. Not all dogs need dog friends to be happy, and it may just be better to keep it solo. If you have an older dog with behavioral issues, or an older dog that likes to lounge, bringing in a hyper and high energy dog may not be a good fit. Consider your current situation and what is best for you all.

Remember, it takes a lot of work initially to get things where you want them to be, it is a marathon, not a sprint!

I hope some people find this information useful. 🐾

📣📣Announcement 📣📣

Hey everyone, I've been quiet on here due to being really busy and dealing with some personal struggles. I am about a year out of back surgery and have seen some severe regression in terms of back pain the last few weeks. I am still thankfully functional, but until I gauge the effectiveness of my recent back injection, I can not schedule any more new clients. For those who have reached out, I have replied via email or let you know my situation already via text. I want to be able to give all of my clients 110%, so until I feel better, I have to keep a lighter workload to be able to give my all and best quality work. Thank you all so much for trusting me with your dogs, and to those considering me to train your pup, I appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.

✔️ Please Note, this does not affect anyone already currently on the schedule!!

Say hello to our newest group class students! Bruce, Keke, Ranger, Lucy, & Nico have all been doing excellent for our first two weeks of class. We had our Saturday morning class graduate today! These pups from when I first met them all have had absolutely tremendous turn arounds. I'm proud of each and every one of them, and it makes me feel so fulfilled to know I made a difference in their lives. Thank you to all of these great owners for taking my teachings seriously and really getting their pups on track. Also, thank you to Julie of Sit Happens K-9 Academy LLC for being an awesome assistant. I had Julie teach portions of this class so she is comfortable for her first upcoming group next Wednesday, I am very appreciative and proud of you! Congrats y'all 🐾

My boy Dexter can be a pretty wild guy, but believe it or not he has pretty severe phobia of fireworks. I've learned not to force the issue, but to proactively manage it to keep him safe and happy. Below are some simple safety tips for the 4 of July!

✔️Try to exercise your dog before the action starts. This will help aid in relaxation for later.

✔️Keep your dog on a leash if you don't have fenced in area, it just isn't worth the risk of them running off.

✔️Get your dog a safe room or crate. I personally have his crate in a dark, quiet area that somewhat isolates the noise.

✔️Use other sounds to keep them from hearing the noise. (Calming music, television, etc.)

✔️Get enrichment prepped ahead of time so they can enjoy being in their safe area. (Filled Kongs, Marrow Bones, Stuffed Beef Trachs, etc.)

✔️Make sure your dog has their collar secure with their tags attached that has all of your necessary information.

For puppies, I recommend playing firework sounds and other noises on Bluetooth speaker to help desensitize. Initially begin at low volumes and begin to up the volume as they do well. 🐾

Let's talk about over-socialization! What is it? It's when you take your dog everywhere and anywhere from a young age, in hopes they learn to love everyone & everything. In some cases this works fine, in others it can make new people, places & things quite unpleasant and develop phobias. It is crucial to slowly expose, in short, sweet, neutral bursts.

Utilizing hand feeding also was a big help for Blu here. She was super phobic of literally anything new and would go into immediate shut down. I did not start by taking her to Lowe's or Tractor Supply, but went to an open field and taught her how to have fun in a new place. Triggers were at a far distance and she learned they brought her good things when she looked at them. We took a lot of time making sure to build value in handler (hand feeding) and associated the new environment as a fun place to be. Once we established new places brought good stuff, rather than potentially negative experiences, we got her to slowly, key word slowly, generalize this everywhere. So remember y'all, improper socialization can be detrimental if not done properly, so make sure proper steps are being taken

5 Year Gotcha Day for my boy Brutus yesterday! He is the best family dog I could ever ask for & is such a resilient boy especially considering his past. He came in the shelter with a 3 day old litter of puppies with a mom dog, while also having melted candle wax all over his back and head. He was super head shy when I first met him & I made it my goal to bond with him. After a few days of hanging out with him while volunteering, I went with my gut and brought him home. This picture played a big part in that decision, btw. Before this guy I never crate trained my dogs or had much structure. He is the first dog I ever used training tools on, and also is my first reactive dog. I went through a lot of learning and made mistakes along the way, but we both grew so much to get to where we are. I am so grateful for you Brutus and I hope to have many more years together ❤️🐾

Check out this handsome man! He struggles with some severe reactivity to other dogs and has had previous training. This is not an obedience issue but more of a state of mind/association problem. Today we kept it simple and taught the power of play! We had no reactions to dogs at a distance and were able to get him to re engage in his favorite thing, the ball! Thinking outside the box for cases like this is necessary to be able to get wins and change the perception to the trigger. Great job to Ford & his owner today! 🐾

We got some new graduates on the front today! This class was really awesome and everyone really left with some great skills to continue working on. We have a couple of rainy days coming up, which is the perfect opportunity for some couch snuggles with your pup. Yes you can up enrichment (filled kongs, lick mats, frozen marrow bones etc) but I also like to enjoy this time to just chill with my dogs. It's the perfect time to get some extra bonding in and teach them that doing absolutely nothing is a good thing. Feel free to share some pics of your pup doing absolutely nothing in the comments 🐾

Our girl Blu officially has left the building this afternoon! We had such a great experience with her over the last 3+ weeks & achieved all of our goals & then some. Her go-home lesson went great and she did amazing confidently functioning around plenty of real life distractions. I'm happy I get to see her tomorrow AM in group class!

This was one of the most significant turnarounds I have had in my career, & I really hold this case special in my heart. Prior to meeting she was not even able to go anywhere without immediately shutting down into a flight response, & today she can really get the life she deserves. Very blessed to be able to work with such a great dog & awesome family as well.
