Love your dog but just can’t seem to get on the same page? Create a schedule. Making the day predictable and including fulfilling activities will dramatically improve your relationship and helps you better communicate with your dog.

Do you train your dog for the groomers?

Unbeknownst to some, it is not your groomers job to ensure your dog is behaved on the table. It's yours.

Desensitization through the maintenance of your dog's coat, nails, ears, and teeth is essential for a happy, safe, and well-kept pup and groomer!

Have you trained your dog to rest?

Huh? What does that mean? After you've met all their needs (exercise, food, water, mental stimulation) are they still bothering you or getting into things? That means you need to first check that you're really fulfilling them mentally whether that be through their genetics or their age and then you need to teach self control / regulation.

Giving them a dog bed and teaching them to stay for extended periods of time based on their understanding will help to teach them to settle themselves. If you stay consistent, this is a great tool to use during times of high excitement in your home.

Do you trust your dog?

Although you've put in all the work to achieve engagement and a strong recall do you give them the benefit of the doubt? Do you let them taste freedom from time to time?

Set up a sniffspot in an open field or maybe one near water and get to work on testing your training. Allowing them some freedom will build their confidence and strengthen the bond between you.

Is your dog's reactivity a nightmare?

Bring them to an open, but relatively busy area and get to work on socialization. Here Tookie built her confidence by jumping up on different surfaces and receiving a reward. Then her stressors started to appear. Dogs.

With dogs and bikers in the background, we continued to work at a distance where I allowed her to look and then asked her to continue working with me instead. By the end of this session we were walking by dogs comfortably and without pressure because I set her up for success. Try it out with your dog and remember, space is key in the beginning!

What are car manners?

When you get in the car is your dog barking out the windows? Jumping into the front? Sitting on you LAP? Then you need to work on car manners and safety.

If they have anxiety, it begins with how you get your dog into the car and then working on their manners without going anywhere. Then you drive around the block, then you build up to actually going somewhere.

If your daily trip to the dog park is the cause, then you'll have to manage their excitement by changing times or the way you prepare yourselves to go.

What is Engagement?

Marrying your dog. Just kidding. You hear the joke all the time, "If I dropped the leash my dog would run to Timbuktu" and they aren't wrong. They have no engagement with their dog.

The breed and age doesn't matter, what matters is motivation. Is your dog interested in treats? Toys? No? Then use some pressure. Is the leash pressure not working? Check your timing and the space between you and the distraction. Still no? Talk to an experienced balanced trainer (like us) and see what other tools you can use to get your desired results.

This focused heel doesn't have to be constant and you can reward your good following pup with frequent freedom, but if you can't get their focus back on you then you'll need to get to work!

Why wait at the door?

You see everywhere trainers teaching their clients to manage excitement at doorways. This sets the tone for the walk and prevents door dashing yes, but more importantly it's one more place in your home and daily schedule that you can practice respect and boundaries to maintain a healthy relationship with your dog.

This mutual respect between you and your dog will be apparent when you bring them into higher stress situations.

Is the crate a bad place?

This girl Tookie has extreme separation anxiety. I mean extreme. Crate conditioning was vital to save the doors, floors, and furniture in the home if I wanted to leave without her. It also ensured she was safe and secure while no one was watching. Slowly she learned to settle and wait calmly until I returned and I no longer worry about leaving for extended periods of time.

Another great reason to crate train your dog is to teach them to rest. If you have a dog that is always going, give them some physical and mental stimulation and then crate them. You'll start to see them learn to settle after exercise.

Do you let your dog on the furniture?

I sure do! I believe we got dogs to enjoy them, snuggle them, and spend quality time with them. I love a good snuggle on the couch or bed.

That being said, pay attention to your dogs attitude and behavior during these times. Do they jump on you uninvited? Can you not keep them off if guests are over? Do they give a little growl or worse when you try to move them? Then your dog needs a quick refresher on who bought and truly owns the couch.

My dogs ask permission to come up for a snuggle (pictured here) and I'm more than happy to oblige. This keeps the understanding that there are respectful boundaries with regards to being on the furniture and the problem behaviors will start to disappear.

How much love is too much?

When dealing with anxious and reactive dogs, an excess of affection can actually foster an unhealthy relationship and worsen their behavior.

Why? This is because you are not setting up boundaries or respect in your home and then expecting your dog to follow you in high stress situations. You've shown your dog that you cannot control simple situations like moving them from the couch, so they do not believe you can control stressful situations / protect them on the street.

Think about the areas in your home where you may allow your dog too much control such as the bed, the kitchen, the couch and try to take a little more leadership. It will show on your walks slowly but surely!
