Did you know there is a difference between heat stress and heat stroke in horses? 🐎

Here is a great infographic. Print it out and put it in your barn!

PHEW! It’s hot out there! With temperatures rising and summer officially upon us, let’s all review the importance of keeping our horses cool!

Horses, like us, naturally cool themselves by sweating, specifically when the sweat evaporates from their body. In fact, a hard-working horse in a hot environment can lose somewhere between 2-4 gallons of sweat per hour! This shows how valuable the sweating and evaporating mechanism is to their temperature regulation. However, in times of high heat and humidity, the sweat cannot evaporate as readily.

One of the most beneficial ways to cool your horse is by hosing them with cool or lukewarm water. The evaporation of the water mimics the sweat mechanism and helps cool them down. In fact, continuous hosing is one of the most effective means of lowering body temperature!

In times like these, it’s important to be aware of what can cause a horse to overheat, what those signs look like, and how we can help them beat the heat.

Horse owners! 🐎

Check out this research that came out a few years ago on the best way to cool down your horse.

Basically, run cool water over your horse for 8 to 10 minutes. Avoid sweats scrapers! Sweat is an important part of the cooling down process.

A recent study, conducted in Japan, compared various methods for cooling horses after exercise in hot and humid conditions. Thoroughbreds were exercised until their pulmonary artery temperature reached 108°F. The time until the pulmonary artery temperature returned to

**🐶🦷 Why Dental Cleanings Are Essential for Your Dog's Heart Health! 🦷❤️**

Did you know that keeping your dog's teeth clean isn't just about fresh breath? Dental health plays a crucial role in their overall well-being, including heart health! Here’s why:

1. **Prevents Gum Disease**: Plaque buildup can lead to gum disease, which is painful and harmful.

2. **Reduces Risk of Infection**: Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs, including the heart.

3. **Promotes Longevity**: Regular dental cleanings can help extend your dog's life by preventing serious health issues.

The sweet boy in the pictures is 17 and never has a dental. Prior to coming to us his mom had never been educated on the importance of dental health. His mouth has a lot of healing ❤️‍🩹 to do before we complete stage 2 for getting him back on track.

Book your furry friend's dental cleaning today and give them the gift of a healthy heart and a happy smile! 🐾❤️

Have horses they said…it will be fun!!

Dr. Bland fixed up Red after she had a tango with some wood on the barn. She had more small pieces of wood embedded than what is pictured!!

Thankfully, Red had received her annual vaccines a few weeks ago, so we didn’t have to update her a tetanus.

Part 2

🔸🔸🔸Breeding Soundness Exam 🔸🔸🔸

Continuation from the post yesterday…

There is no way of looking at the semen in the tube to tell if the bull is fertile

1) Gross motility must be examined under the microscope (usually at 4x)…basically how are the s***m are swimming

2) Individual motility must be examined under the microscope (usually at 10x) after…basically how many of the s***m cells are traveling in a straight line

3) Individual morphology tells you if the s***m will actually fertilize the egg and get a cow pregnant. The sample must be examined under the microscope after a special dye is added to the sample. Once the slide is dry, a drop of immersion oil is added to the slide which is viewed at 100x. Then 100 s***m cells are counted and defects of the head, midpiece, and tail are noted. He has to have at least 70% normal s***m cells to pass. It doesn’t matter how good the motility is if there are abnormalities with the s***m it likely won’t fertilize an egg which results in a cow not getting pregnant. This step is most often where a bull fails the BSE.

These 3 steps are critical components in a BSE according to The Society For Theriogenology (SFT), which Dr. Bland is a member of. SFT is the gold standard when it comes to BSEs.

Pictured is part of our form that is filled out for each bull we test

Don’t forget a BSE is more than a “semen check”! Tomorrow we will discuss a few of the other important parts to a BSE.

Our Story

Broken L Veterinary Services (BLVS) is a mobile mixed animal and exotics practice based out of Nashville, AR but will provide services for Oklahoma and Arkansas. BLVS strives to provide excellent care at reasonable prices for all species of animals. Dr. Chelsea Bland Smith, DVM is owner and operator of BLVS.

Dr. Bland is a Kansas native received her Associate of Science (AS) from Cowley County Community College (CCCC) in Arkansas City, Kansas in 2004. She received her Bachelors of Science (BS) with an Animal Science focus from Oklahoma State (OSU) in 2007. Dr. Bland received her Applied Associate of Science (AAS) from Cedar Valley College (CVC) for her Veterinary Technician degree in 2008. Her most recent academic achievement is receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from St. George’s University (SGU) in 2017.

Prior to graduating from Vet School, Dr. Bland married the love of her life, Justin Smith. They reside in Nashville, AR which is where Justin was born and raised. They currently have 1 adopted Blue Merle Aussie (June), 1 adopted Red Heeler (Gabby), 2 Great Pyrenees pups (Waylon & Willie); All 4 of the dogs are working dogs. They also have 2 adopted cats (Lewis, & Clark), 3 Boer goats (Princess, Fae, & Brownie), 5 Quarter Horses (Pedro, Patrick, Katy, Sheik, & Sister), 6 Chuckwagon Racing Ponies (Jack, Coco, Sickle, Ben, Pepper, & Buck), and a small herd of commercial cows.

The Broken L portion of the business name has a very rich and deep history in the cattle industry. Dr. Bland is the 5th generation for the Broken L Brand (pictured above), and it is one of the oldest registered brands in Kansas. The brand came about because, at the start of the brand registry, the brand had to have 2 separate parts, thus the easiest way to accomplish this was with 2 straight lines. The original placement of the Broken L Brand is on the right hip. Some family members started running cattle together and different locations of the brand correlated to different families. The Broken L Brand is also registered in Oklahoma and will soon be registered in Arkansas.
