To prevent your pipes from freezing when the weather drops below freezing, follow these tips:
1. **Insulate Your Pipes**: Use pipe insulation or heat tape to wrap any exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces.
2. **Keep a Drip**: Let faucets drip slightly. This keeps water moving through the pipes, making it less likely to freeze.
3. **Seal Gaps**: Check for any gaps or cracks near pipes that could let in cold air. Use caulk or insulation to seal these gaps.
4. **Open Cabinet Doors**: If you have pipes under sinks, open the cabinet doors to let warm air from your home circulate around the pipes.
5. **Set Thermostat Consistently**: Keep your thermostat set at a consistent temperature, both day and night.
6. **Disconnect Hoses**: Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent any water in the hose from freezing and backing up into the house.
7. **Use Heat**: For extremely cold weather, consider using a space heater in areas where pipes are at risk of freezing. Make sure to follow all safety guidelines for heater use.
