Happy National Penguin Day! The Virginia Safari Park is proud to support the Dyer Island Conservation Trust's (DICT) proactive measures to save the African penguin from extinction. One of those measures is the Penguin Penthouse Project to provide wild penguins with artificial nests.

Penguins build their nests by burrowing into the thick layers of guano. Before the advent of artificially produced fertilizer, guano was considered a top-quality fertilizer and was scraped from the penguin breeding islands. The removal of the guano exposed the African Penguin breeding areas and without the burrows, the “open-plan” living arrangement turned their eggs and chicks into an easy meal for predators.

Through Zoofari Park's conservation grants, VSP is helping DICT build the perfect penguin penthouse. 🐧
