Surprise! Thought I saw a hen sneak in to the far side of the coop and went to check it out. Found a little more than I bargained for 😂
I'll work on getting them put in a cage where they'll be safe tonight, definitely a welcome surprise as I was wanting to hatch some eggs soon 🥰

It's officially fly mask season on the farm, scar and shoofly are old hats to this routine (though shoofly despises velcro and has to have a slip on mask), but merlin is still getting used to it. Here's hoping he doesn't destroy any masks this season. Last year I had to throw the one I'd gotten him away, and the one for shoofly 🤦🏼‍♀️
Oh well, just means shoo gets a fancy new one this season 💜

Welcome the newest members of the farm! American Chinchilla Rabbits
Going forward, all breeding rabbits will be named after trees so
The first picture is my buck, his name is Douglas(Fir)
The three does are Cedar, Aspen, and Willow
All four are pedigreed American chinchillas and I will be pedigreeing their kits when I start breeding in a few months.
American chinchillas are a rare breed known for their good body quality, fast growth rate, moderate temperaments, and gorgeous pelts. Kits will be used for meat, or for sale as pets/show once I refine my knowledge on confirmation. My goal is to not only provide our household with a sustainable meat source, but to also improve the breed. I will also be learning how to tan the pelts and potentially selling them.
I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me 😍

When we first moved in, it was the middle of winter and we had no idea what all was around the property for plants and flowers. Imagine my surprise when, that spring, a whole wall of tulips bloomed!
They are one of my favorite parts of spring every year. They might need some thinning this year, but that's a project or a later date ❤️

Got a new set up recently, the old hen box got sprayed by a skunk so it had to be removed and burned. New boxes are recycled cat litter pails and so far so good! I think I need to add one or two more for the amount of hens I have but I'm please with them so far

Warm weather has barely started and the girls are already knocking it out of the park 😍
There's gonna be an avalanche of eggs this summer, I think. Plus we'll be adding more chick's next month. It's going to be a very full summer 🥰

Newest roo to the farm, a Beilfelder who is yet to be named
He'll be part of a program I'm starting this fall. I'm getting some beilfelder chicks this spring and will be hatching out my own chick's of this wonderful breed when they start laying
Beilfelders were one of the first chicken breeds I was introduced to and I've had a continued respect for them. They're dual purpose for both eggs and meat with good temperaments. This roo is already very friendly and I'm eager to see how his future chick's line up

The newest addition to the farm is currently on quarantine until I'm ready to integrate him in the the flock, and he is not very pleased about it

He's part of a new project I'll be working on this summer/fall that I'm very excited for. He'll get a formal introduction very soon

Roosters! Barn yard mixes, 3 full sized, 2 bantams, and 1 that's somewhere in between. All are solid citizens, never had any aggression issues. The solid white one has gotten bloody in defense of his hens. I would keep him but I (obviously) have too many roos and had to make some hard decisions.
Most of them hatched out last summer, I got the white one from a friend so I'm not sure age on him

Beef tallow is back! Used in the stead of hydrogenated oils and butter for cooking, and also used by hunters to grind in to venison to add flavor and fat to the leaner meat. It also can be made in the candles, soap, and put to a long list of uses.

With a long shelf life, it can be stored for over a year in the pantry, 3-4 years in a fridge, or indefinitely in the freezer(if rendered and stored properly).

I will be working on several batches over the next few weeks so reach out if you would like a jar of grass fed beef tallow!

This little thing showed up the other night. I've been told 'Biscuit' will NOT be a house cat. But there's no objections to feeding them outside and making them friendly 😊

Welcome the newest members of the RWBR family, guineas!

Guineas are tick vacuums, snake killers, and all natural property alarms. They're also notorious wanderers so they'll stayed cooped for a while until they learn home, but will eventually have free range to forage to their hearts content

Well, the sad new is Lollipop the heifer got harvested today. The happier news is that nothing will go to waste.
Most of the carcass went to a friend to fill his freezer, many of the organs and bones will be used to feed the working dogs, and her tallow will get rendered down to use in cooking.
I was sad to make the decision, but I'm grateful that nothing will be wasted and that it means that I will know exactly where my tallow comes from and how it was raised and treated

Happy New Years from all of us here at RWBR Farms.

The 'old folks' as I lovingly call them are enjoying a new bale of hay, chickens are tearing up some alfalfa, and my saddle horses are soaking in the vacation time.

After this past year, here's hoping 2024 is uneventful and completely precedented

Overdue update on the 'baby birds' and farm life in general.
The baby birds are really starting to mature and they are gorgeous. It's becoming more obvious which are roos and which are hens, I'm gonna have some hard choices about flock roosters coming up.
If you know anyone looking for some gorgeous roos let me know! I've got one or two full sized that will need new homes, as well as some part bantys. They sure got some color!

As far as farm life in general things have been busy! Two of the ranch horses came down to stay with us for the winter to get some extra groceries, we've been building fence and getting things ready for winter.
However, farm life isn't always happy chickens and cute old horses. We've lost a few more chickens in the past month including one of the baby birds, pretty sure it was a raccoon or something similar. Though it seems to have moved on. Also, my charolaise heifer came off range open, so she sadly won't be sticking around.
I have chosen my next 2 heifers that will be with the big herd. A red brindle heifer and a blue roan, I've got high hopes for them for next calving season 😊

The baby birds aren't quite babies anymore
Finished integrating the last of the youngins and they're doing pretty well. It'll be a little while till I know exactly what's what but I've got a few probable roos and a few probable hens. Everything else will sort itself out. But regardless, they sure are pretty to look at 😍

The color variations are getting more pronounced ever day, and I've gotta say there are some gorgeous birds in this clutch
All the pullets will stay here, but I'm only planning to keep one or two roos. So keep an eye out for a few available roosters!
I'll also be getting a few new hens and a roo or two from Timber Swamp Farm 😍😍
This last year has been hard on the flock but we're coming back strong 💜

The baby birds are growing up! Moved them outside and upgraded the size of their trough. They were sure what to do with all the extra room at first but they were exploring within the hour
There's 2 or 3 that are for sure roosters, but most could go either way at this point. But boy did they throw some color! 😍

The number is officially 15, I've still got a few eggs in the incubator but I don't think they're gonna hatch unfortunately. However I got my goal and they're up and feisty 😊 They're all so uniquely colored and several have the poofy cheeks that could either be from my old white rooster or from my several poofy cheeked hens. Regardless, it tells me they've got some americauna in them and will likely be blue or green egg layers 😍 I am so excited to watch these chick's grow up
