Dogs love being DOGS! When I take my two to the park, we go on “nature-ing” adventures. We don’t bother anybody, but we DO explore and enjoy to the fullest. This wouldn’t be possible if they weren’t off-leash trained. Dogs get to experience SO much more when you can reliably recall them back. This would be a different experience for us all if they were both on a leash.

I’ve recently boarded two different training dogs that came to off-leash training a while back, and when I first saw them again I immediately noticed that they both were so much HAPPIER. One of them was wiggling and grinning and so happy to be alive, and that was so different from the dog I first met.

The reason? He was able to live the off-leash life and enjoy being a dog. Simple as that.

When dogs get their needs fulfilled, things change.

Your herding dog doesn’t want to sit on the couch, they want to chase/run/herd something.

Your working breed wants a job to do.

Your Labrador wants to swim.

Your beagle wants to follow scents.

Maybe it’s not the exact same thing that they would be doing, but we can offer them something pretty darn close if we try. And THAT gives our dog quality of life, builds a stronger bond between us and our dog, and shows them how much we love them ❤️

Wiley is a really nervy fella, so we have been doing some confidence building exercises to help with that. I have jumps, a tunnel, and this seesaw for that exact purpose. I want him to feel a little more comfortable in his own skin as we progress through his training.

Jasmin, a regular boarder, is another one of Daisy’s friends. She’s been helping Daisy train because Daisy gets super excited around other dogs. Daisy is solidifying her off-leash reliability in her commands.

Marley has been learning her place command. I wouldn’t normally be able to move this far this soon into training, but since she’s small she’s still a little nervous about jumping off by herself, so I’m using that to my advantage. My two dogs are showing her how it’s done and placing on their own beds 😊

Daisy trained at yet another new park for more distraction work, and we passed several other dogs on our walk, as well as other people, and we also watched someone practice their tennis swing (the balls were tempting for her). We have been working on her off-leash heel work, and she’s so smart she’s figuring everything out really quickly 😊

Cooper and I had a “different” kind of training session today! My parents were over, so I asked my mom to help out for a few minutes. She walked my husky, Floki, around on a leash near us while I worked with Cooper (who of course was also on a leash) to continue desensitizing him to that.

Then, we ramped things up a bit. Since Cooper got really excited about balls being thrown/kicked and the chase that occurred at the park the other day, we decided we would work on desensitizing to that as well. I had my mom just play fetch with Floki while Cooper held his “place” command.

This teaches Cooper a couple things: 1, that he doesn’t always get to chase after something he wants. 2, that he has to remain obedient no matter what is happening around him. And 3, that he is allowed to relax even amidst chaos (or what he perceives as chaos).

Baxter’s tongue is always slightly sticking out 😂 you can’t tell me that’s not the cutest thing in the world.

He’s beginning to lure into his commands now! He’s got lots and lots of energy, so being able to place him occasionally will be important for his owner. With that being the case, that’s where we started with building a foundation for his “stays”.
