I’m not gone, but I am taking a little time off to unpack and organize after moving into a bigger house, and I’m also going to be traveling a bit. Morgan will still be training puppies, on-leash and off-leash dogs while I’m gone! Any behavior modification clients will be put on my schedule, and I’m booking in the 1st/2nd weeks of November.
I’ll probably have some little informative videos to share with y’all while I’m away, and I may post some pictures of our adventures as well 🙂

That’s a wrap, Loki! Loki has just finished up his program and is getting ready to return home with off-leash training skills. Y’all may have noticed that we also worked on training around other dogs quite a bit - we wanted to make that a focus after returning to training. He came for our advanced puppy program, and has now completed off-leash training. The best way to get the most out of training is to start as soon as you can and complete the highest level you can, and he’s done great!

People are sometimes your biggest obstacle to training 🥴 thankfully Winnie had no problem walking past people, but it’s natural for her to get excited if she sees someone that looks like they’re coming down to her level to show her some attention.

What does it mean to have a structured playtime? It looks something like this! We’re using simple training commands to play, and this is a great way to work some training into your day if you’re too busy to do very much with your puppy. Biscuit needs to have a strong “leave it” command, so we use it during playtime to get extra practice in.

Blue has been working her commands on a long line leash, so now as we work her recalls she is hooked up to a 30 foot leash. This will teach her to recall from longer distances. We practice this inside as well, and inside it simply looks like recalling across the house. With the storm, we’ll probably be inside more over the next few days.

It’s a gross rainy day down here (thanks Debby 🤣) so we’ve been training inside! Today Lou Lou worked on holding an extended place, relaxing in place, and staying in place while I walk to and open the door. This is how we learn to stay in place as people enter! I use the other door to my house as a back tie, but some people have bolts in the studs in their walls and those work well too. If she gets up off place before she’s freed, the leash will catch her and I give her an ecollar correction as well. You might see her shake her head a little after the ecollar correction and then go right back into place. That’s the exact response we want! I’m still gradually rewarding her while she stays, and towards the end I went to the door and opened it and she laid down and got comfy on the cot, so she got EXTRA rewarded for that. We want a dog that can relax while the door is opening 🥰 we decided to end on a positive note and stop working there. I sped this up quite a bit because it would’ve been a 15 minute video otherwise.

Congratulations, Winnie! Winnie is about to graduate from our advanced puppy program 😁 she has been fun to train! She’s got a lot of energy and she’s a typical Labrador in a lot of ways, but we’ve molded her into a better mannered companion. Charlie has forced me to get creative. She’s probably the worst resource guarder I’ve ever had so far. When we started trying to use a bowl for her meals, she got much more aggressive. So we changed it up and I started throwing her meals on the place cot. The cot is a much larger space that’s harder to guard, and she did just fine eating off of it. Then, she decided she didn’t want to do that after a few days (just wasn’t interested in eating), so we switched it up. Instead of putting a bowl of food in front of her, I put an empty bowl down and threw a handful of food in. She ate that, and I gave her more in the same fashion until she finished her dinner.

You don’t need to ask permission from every dog, but for dogs that take issue with certain types of spatial pressure, we can certainly make the process of petting them less stressful by creating communication that allows them to accept or deny being touched. Biscuit and I have been working on nonverbal cues that mean he either does or does not want to be petted. This is what that looks like for him.

It’s super quick but we did a lot today!
Winnie does really well working without distractions, so it was time to add some in! We’re outside of the fence working because I didn’t want my dogs to be underfoot.
This is the time when playtime buddies turns into training buddies! Winnie gets very excited around other dogs, so it’s good to work through that excitement. She practiced place, sit, down and come (away from the fence) while my dogs ran around and hung out just inside.
Something else to note here is that this is also considered socialization. Dogs don't have to play with each other to be socialized around each other. Seeing other dogs and learning that they exist is the goal with socialization! Yes, it's important to make sure our puppy can play well with other dogs, but it doesn't mean they have to play with EVERY dog EVERY time they see one!
