Resource guarders can be dangerous, and Ruger’s family is aware of that because he’s bitten several times over various things. We want to change the way he perceives the situations in which he has something that he might want to guard, and we also want to give him new rules to live by so that everyone is safe when it comes to taking something from him or just existing in the same space with him while he’s eating. We need to do a lot, consistently, to modify his behaviors. Here’s the beginning stage.

Lizzie, the nervy girl, had a training day at the park today! She climbed some playground equipment to practice placing up there, and we also worked heeling past other walkers, and holding sit stays as we waited for others to unload their dogs from their cars. Being able to recall her is very important for her owners, so practicing this in various environments will help her have a clear understanding of her recall, and ensure that she can recall wherever she is.

Help me welcome Ruger to training! Ruger is joining us for our Behavior Modification course. He is here because he resource guards food, whether or not it’s meant for him. He is also human reactive, and he displays barrier aggression which goes hand in hand with his human reactivity.
We have already hit the ground running with several of those things. For now, he is being hand fed. We have begun laying the foundation for “leave it” when something is dropped on the floor, and we have also already begun working on his barrier aggression using the crate. He displays barrier aggression when crated, so that is our first hurdle to tackle!

A great way to keep tensions from building as you prepare dinner in a multi-pet household is to use your place command! This keeps dogs separate and in their own space so that nothing can arise while your back is turned and you’re preparing food.
This is something that could be helpful for a dog that resource guards food around other dogs. It will keep everyone settled until you’re ready to feed them.
Establishing a solid feeding routine is also important for a dog that resource guards around people. We will cover that more in the coming weeks.
The reason I mention picking up any stray food and placing it in my dog’s food bowl is part of the strategy to working on resource guarding around humans. I told my lab to “leave it” when she went near the food so that I could finish picking it up without my hand being right under her face. This establishes a solid boundary. Me then placing her food in her food bowl establishes that she’s allowed to eat anything in her food bowl, but that’s the only place she’s allowed to eat.

Lizzie is a skittish girl, so we’ve been working on that. She’s slowly warming up to my agility tunnel. Today she put all 4 feet inside of it, which was huge! She got a jackpot reward for that.
You can see that she’s nervous about going in, but she’s doing it anyway. She’s doing this entirely on her own, with the lure of treats. This is not something we can force a dog to do. Building our dog’s confidence is definitely something we just guide them in versus requiring them to do these things.
Lizzie is afraid of materials that sound like this tunnel, including plastic bags, so those have also and will continue to make appearances in her training.

Physical exercise is really important for dogs - we want them to stretch their legs, play, enjoy walks, and engage with us.
Something else that is fulfilling for dogs, and just as tiring to them, is mental stimulation. This involves giving your dog puzzles to solve and things to think about.
Training is a great way to keep your dog mentally stimulated - they will be watching you, listening to you, and thinking in order to respond to what you’re saying.
There are LOTS of toys/games for dogs that also provide enrichment in this way. Here, you can see an example of that. Keep in mind this is just one example. It takes Piper 30 minutes to eat her meals this way, versus the 60 seconds it might take without any barrier between her and her food.
My goal here isn’t to slow down her eating, but this could also be used for that. If your dog eats too quickly and sometimes throws a little back up or heaves while trying to scarf down food, a snuffle ball/mat could help them pump the brakes. There are also slow feeders, but again this is just one example that is applicable to a couple different things.
Games/mental stimulation like this shouldn’t REPLACE physical activity, but it can be an excellent addition to physical activity in order to help your dog feel fulfilled, get their energy out, and also have a little fun 🐕

Teaching a heel involves giving our dog corrections for straying too far/pulling, as well as rewards for doing things right. We try to give more rewards than corrections when we are teaching something. Lizzie’s owners have struggled to walk her because she pulls towards smells she likes. It’s okay for dogs to follow a scent when they’re off-leash and leaning into their primal self, but when they’re on-leash and we are trying to enjoy our walk with them, we don’t want them pulling us towards everything that tickles their senses.
Here, you can see how I teach Lizzie to turn by using something to lure her into it. I also frequently reward her for staying in the heel position, and for her attention when she looks up at me versus looking/preferring to go elsewhere.
We need to practice this over and over in a variety of environments for her to become proficient, this is just the beginning!

Congratulations, Lilo, it’s time to graduate!! Lilo is my last graduate of 2024!
Lilo was the worst puller when she came to training. Her owners sent a braided leash with her because “it was the strongest one they could find”. Lilo learned opposition reflex while dragging her family around, so her pattern became pulling harder if you put any pressure on her. We worked hard on teaching her to give in to pressure instead of pulling against it. She also wouldn’t jump into the car, and she was a terrible jumper (on humans) when she got excited.
I’d say she has really turned things around! Watch what our outing looked like!

If we are initially introducing this method, this is how you would want to start. Do this for the first day. The next day, raise the expectations, and then again, and so on and so forth. Play the loud noises for longer. Play different videos/sound recordings so that your dog isn’t just getting used to the same one all the time. Turn the volume up more the more you do this. Change things up to make it more realistic for your dog - real life scenarios are the best way to ensure success with your dog!
Depending on the dog, if they are extremely nervous around loud noises, you may need to find a different reward. Food may not do it for them. And you may need to start more than a week before the holiday/event you’re preparing for. You know your dog, so you can make the best judgment for your individual dog when it comes to this!

Lilo has been working her ecollar conditioning, and here we work a combo of a recall right into a sit. Each time I give her a command that she already understands, I add a low level stim from the ecollar. This helps her learn how to respond to the ecollar appropriately as we move forward. The last clip is the low level we were using - an 8/100. When we say low, we mean low! It’s just enough for her to feel it, without feeling uncomfortable.
