So, what you probably don't know, is that our horses have angels, even before they come to us. Angels, that watch them, report the inhumane treatment to authorities over and over again until something is done, sneak them food, and sometimes just visit over and over again so they do not feel so alone. For many of our horses, those angels are truly the hope that keeps them going.
Hope that things could be better.
This video is from one of those angels. She is Anya's angel and we could not be more grateful for her and people like her that help us reach our mission every single day.
So, I'll tell you about Anya. Anya is maybe 19 or 20. After you watch the video, you'll understand more of what Anya has been through. She lived most of her years alone in the fenced in portion of someone's backyard, possibly no wider than 30x70 feet - walking her thin body up and down in the mud and waste that came up past her ankles. Neglected and left alone. . . but yet, she greeted her angel warmly whenever she would come to see her. Her angel called again and again and begged for help for Anya until HOPE came - and Sharon heard the calls.
Anya now lives with a foster family under HOPE's care while she awaits her forever family. She is loved and brushed, receives treats and is whispered to gently. Sharon will go and feed her at the foster and wait with her until she is done eating because Anya really enjoys one stall over the other and Sharon makes sure she gets it. Our volunteers greet her warmly and Anya loves the busyness of it all.
When you become one of "her people" you'll know it and you'll feel like the brightest sunshine is shining down on you. She will trot up to greet you - stand still while you brush and let you lay your head on her back when you are tired or sad. She does have a cloudy eye but that hasn't slowed her down at all. We'd love to see her go to someone who can treat her like the queen she truly is - after so many years alone, we'd like for her to have hors
For those who have been following Squirt's journey, it's been about 2 1/2 months since he arrived at HOPE with a body score of 1, indicating extreme emaciation. His ribs, spine, and other bony structures were starkly visible, devoid of any fatty tissue.
Under specialized refeeding, Squirt was placed with a foster mom, where he's been gradually regaining strength and experiencing the joys of being cared for and pampered. Yesterday, his foster mom dedicated over an hour to untangle his matted fur, groom his tail and mane, and give him a quick spot bath.
As she briefly stepped inside to fetch more supplies, she returned to find Squirt like this: <3 <3 <3
On this muddy Saturday, HOPE had it's very first ever volunteer meeting! As these big hearted people came together to discuss plans and fundraisers for the future, our Randy gave us a quick reminder of why we do the things we do.
Just minutes before the meeting started, one of the volunteers saw that Randy was laying down. When Sharon approached him, he still didn't stand up and she knew a call to the vet was in order.
After consulting with the vet, taking Randy's temperature and moving him back to his stall, Sharon gave him medicine and we all waited. Mojo paced outside his stall, worried about his buddy the entire time.
After a while, Randy stretched and stood up to a round of applause from his biggest fans. He is on the mend and is being watched closely.
Give him a little prayer or send positive energy that he just continues to get better - we'll give up an update tomorrow. In the meantime, if anyone has a way to get us some sunshine so everything can dry up a little, I think we'd all feel better!
Thank you to everyone that makes this organization possible. Thank you for your great big ol hearts.

Two things about Twisted. . .
1) He loves helping his friends.
2) He can't stand a halter on a horse.
Just because Mojo may not appreciate his efforts doesn't mean the intention was bad. LOLOLOL
