Unfurnished/Weakly Furnished--What does it mean?
Our second-generation cross (Goldendoodle x Bernedoodle) produces a small percentage of puppies that are "unfurnished" or, in some cases, "weakly furnished." We get lots of questions about this, so here's some info:
"Fully furnished" Doodles have the classic beard and "floof" around the eyes. They can be considered hypoallergenic and non-shedding in most cases.
By constrast, an "unfurnished" Doodle has a flat muzzle, like a Retriever, and often a flatter coat (although coat gene is separate from the furnishing gene, so some unfurnished can be wavy or curly-coated). Typically, they shed some. "How much" is anyone's guess, although it is usually light-to-moderate, and almost always much less than the "parent breeds" in the lineage.
A "weakly furnished" puppy has signs of furnishings, but they usually don't fully come in until the transition to the adult coat (6-ish months). A weakly furnished puppy may or may not shed. Sometimes level of shedding changes with the coat transition, and sometimes not.
What do ALL of these puppies have in common, regardless of furnishings? Carrier Family Doodles puppies go through Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), sound de-sensitization, and get LOTS of socialization and nurture. They're trained to an astro-turf potty system, which usually translates well to the great outdoors when the time comes. They're ready for anything: family pet, companion, or even possible therapy dog!
