There are five key concepts to teach your puppy. 💡

🐾 Where to go potty. Decide where the outside potty area will be and consistently take your pup there. Offer a treat immediately after "doing business" has been done.

🐾 Where to NOT go potty. Avoid frightening and/or punishing your puppy. Redirection without fear is the fastest way to get results.

🐾 ‘Hold it’ when there's no access to a potty area. Using a crate or keeping a leash until potty-training is complete will help with this process.

🐾 Signal when the need to go potty arises. Teaching your pup to ring a bell instead of barking, whining, or scratching the door is an ideal method.

🐾 Word/phrase you will use to go potty. Keying a phrase to condition your pup to want to go to the bathroom is the final step.

Our friends joke about "bringing your dog to work day" because we often have pants covered with dog fur! 🐕

If you want to minimize the amount of hair you’re vacuuming and lint-rolling off your clothes, consider a low-shedding hypo-allergenic pup. While their hair is usually longer than a short-haired breed, they actually shed less. The trade-off is that they do typically require regular trips to the groomer. 💈

These pups are also fantastic for those that love dogs but are allergic. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, as much as 10% of the U.S. population is allergic to dogs! 🤧

While there are no 100% hypoallergenic dogs, there are many breeds that do well with allergy sufferers. Dander, which is attached to pet hair, is what causes most pet allergies in humans and these dogs have a non-shedding coat that produces less dander. 🐩

Many pup parents (us included) have a dog with storm phobia. The dog pants, paces and may even hide in the bathroom and it's heartbreaking. ⛈️

Here are five tips that could help.

1. Be home with your dog to offer a calming presence and lessen anxiety. If that's not an option, drop your pup off with a family member or friend's house if they're around. 🐕

2. Lessen the impact of thunder with other sounds like TV, radio, a white noise machine. There's even dog calming music that exists just for storms! 📺

3. Try a Thundershirt. This snug shirt wraps around your pup and applies gentle pressure, similar to swaddling a baby. It can sooth some (but not all) dogs into a calmer state or mind. 👕

4. Try to distract your pup with fetch, tug of war or a good belly rub. 🎾

5. For the highly-anxious pups who doesn't respond to the above methods, it may be best to visit your vet and discuss possible medication. 👩‍⚕️

Quick-release collars, also known as breakaway or buckle collars, are specifically designed to open/unclasp when pulled or tugged on with force. ✨

This prevents any injury or strangulation of your pup if he/she gets caught on something like a tree branch, fence, or the jaws of another dog during play. 🌳

Many people choose plastic pet food bowls because they're readily available, inexpensive, and come in lots of colors and sizes. However, a plastic bowl might not be the best choice for your pup. 🐕

Small scratches that occur over time will trap and hold bacteria that can't be removed even with cleaning. 🦠

Pups may develop an allergic reaction to the plastic. While this is a controversial issue, some experts say that some plastics may emit BPA or other dangerous chemicals which can leach into your pet’s food. ☠️

Finally, a dog that is a super chewer may end up chewing the plastic pet food bowl, possibly swallowing pieces of the bowl. 😲

The safest pet food bowls are stainless steel because they are unbreakable, durable, dishwasher-safe and easy to keep clean. 💪

Wasabi, the Pekingese, won Best in Show at the 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show yesterday. 🏆

The show is the second-oldest continuous sporting event in the United States, following the Kentucky Derby, It's run through world wars, previous pandemics and economic depressions. 😮

Wasabi's breeder, David Fitzpatrick, told Fox's Sara Walsh he and the 3-year-old Pekingese will be celebrating tonight. "He can have a filet mignon and I'll have champagne," Fitzpatrick said. 🍾

The Better Business Bureau says that more than 80% of sponsored pet ads may be fake. Here's how to spot them. 👀

1. Immediate Payment: If a breeder immediately replies demanding payment or states that they cannot answer questions until a payment has been received, this is a red flag. Good breeders will put the safety and rehoming of their pup before anything. They should respond to your questions by asking their own and set up a meeting. If they only care about money, keep looking elsewhere. 💰

2. High Discounts: If there is a perfectly healthy puppy being advertised to have a high discount, be aware. There is no reason for a puppy in good health to be given away for a discount unless they have aged a considerable amount. 🙅‍♀‍

3. Payment by Wire Transfer: Why would a breeder require a wire transfer if you're going to see them in person to pick up the puppy? Not every breeder that requests a wire transfer is running a scam, but this is something to consider, especially if they require full payment up front. 🏦

4. Claim of shipping complications/additional charges: Sometimes scammers will sell a puppy and create imaginary added costs such as an extra plane ticket or fuel costs. Buyers that ask questions may be threatened by the breeder with the change of the puppy being returned. ✈️

5. Communication exclusively via email: Most businesses communicate by email so why is this a warning sign? It’s not unless breeders refuse to communicate in any other way before a deposit is made. Through emails, scammers are able to conceal themselves and present any image they wish while avoiding a face-to-face meeting. 📧

6. Copied listings or pictures: Often puppy scams will copy an entire puppy listing from another breeder. They may even research the breeder to learn background facts! ⛔

Puppy training should start as early as 8 weeks old. 🐾

At this young age, pups can learn basic puppy training cues such as "sit", "stay", and "come." 🐶

This is also a great time to enroll him/her in puppy socialization classes with other pups of a similar age. 🐕

By 6 months of age, almost all behavior problems are already in place and may need personalized training to solve. ✨
