Let's Get Sniffy: An Intro to K9 Scent Work
6 Week Virtual Group Class

Let's Get Sniffy is a novice level scent work class, created for dog owners who are interested in getting started in scent work for competition or for fun! At the end of this class your dog will be confident in interior searches & container searches, and will have the building blocks for buried and exterior searches!

Working spot: you have a personalized thread to upload videos to on our group. You work through the material from the class and upload hw assignments. I then comment on your assignments with critiques, how to fix & change things so you can progress as a team with your dog! 1-1 training within a "group setting". Since the lectures are posted once a week, it gives you a full week to upload videos when you can (and you can continue posting as many videos as you'd want, it's not just one a week)

Audit: you get all of the material and get to watch classmates videos and learn from them and my critiques, but I do not give you personalized feedback.

Classes will be uploaded once a week for 6 weeks in lecture style with a powerpoint with videos and instructions/education embedded

Long Island Golden Retriever Club Scent Work Trial | July 6th & 7th, 2024

What a blast this weekend was! As always a HUGE shout out to the LIGRC for hosting such an incredible trial. Amanda Muller you outdid yourself as *always* with organizing this event. Truly terrific job. A huge thank you to all club members, volunteers, and the incredible judges for everything this weekend, as well as the amazing exhibitors for all of the lovely conversations!

It’s the summer - it’s hot, we knew that when we signed up, and we knew it would be more challenging to have our dogs search in these humid/hot conditions. The dogs still did great regardless, and had a really great time! Our 3 also indoor crated for the first time, and acted like they’ve been doing it their entire lives.

We got some titles we’ve been chasing, like Arya’s first master title (SCM with extra legs towards elite now), both Arya & Rainier’s overall Excellent titles (I can not believe baby Rai has her SWE, I love this pup), 2 more advanced elite titles for Rai (1 more leg needed in advanced buried for that title and her overall advanced elite), and Reef’s first 2 novice elite titles & his first 2 Q’s in advanced! I’m super proud of how they did this weekend, love these pups so much 🩵

My dog competed at Westminster today with myself and Mike, and won her division! She’s officially the 2024 Westminster Champion in Open Senior Dock Diving!

For any clients that want to watch, it should be on Fox Sports at some point in the future 💜 there is also a recorded live stream on Westminster’s youtube channel from today!

The CDC released new information yesterday (May 8th, 2024) regarding new guidelines on dogs being imported into the United States, which includes guidelines on dog transportation/travel to and from the United States.

According to the CDC, these guidelines were put in place due to the increase in rabies cases in the United States, which has occurred due to irresponsible rescuing/sheltering operations and mills importing sick dogs from outside of country whom had rabies, as well as other problematic diseases.

"Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents."

This not only implies that dogs can only be brought into the United States if they are over 6 months of age, but also that people can no longer travel with a dog younger than 6 months of age out of country, and then back, if the dog is not 6 months of age upon returning back to the United States. There are a lot of issues to unpack here, but this articles goes through what is the most concerning topic to me as a certified dog behavior consultant and an ethical breeder of border collies for performance/sport, to the least concerning topic, but still concerning nonetheless.

We all learn from our first scent work dog. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that we rushed things maybe a little bit too much with our first scent work dog; honestly, we probably rushed things a bit too quickly with our first dog sport dog in any sport, full stop.

We’re competing at dock diving at Westminster this Saturday and are getting super excited for the big event! Since it’s the first event of the season, we’re planning on having a lot of fun, and seeing where Arya’s at after not competing since last October at Nationals! At the end of the day, super excited to be doing the thing with the most special girl at such an incredible event. Let’s go Arya!!!

...the success feels great, but it also feels rushed in a way. We climbed up the levels because we could, but not because we should have.

In mid March, I began to notice some fringe/pooling odor scent work training problems with my puppy, Rainier, and got straight to work! This is how I worked on this puzzle with her:

Pooling odor is really tricky, because odor that pools can be at a higher "concentration" than the source odor itself.

Scent work is currently, in 2024, one of the fastest growing dog sports. The sport allows for our dogs to zone in on one of their most important senses, and creates an incredible bond between handler and dog as we interact in this sniffy environment with them.
