Let’s talk about cooperative care⬇️
Giving our dogs autonomy is important for building trust and confidence. When we give them the ability to choose, we can create clear two-way communication and give them the ability to opt in.
Cooperative care is essential for the emotional well being of the dog and for the safety of the handler.
Remember, “YES” only has meaning if “NO” is an option!
🤎
This is Ipo’s first ever nail trim. We started slow introducing the clippers using treats to build trust and never restraining her in any way. She was very eager to work for treats and quickly got the process down.
First nail trim was a success!
Unpopular opinion: it’s okay to share your food with your dog!
🐾🤎
First and foremost, health and safety first! Please do not give your dog foods that are not healthy for them! Also be mindful of their weight and do not over feed your dog.
1️⃣ You’re never going to make your dog *not* care about food. It smells good and they’re naturally interested in what we’re doing. Giving them an option to have a bite is a great way to reinforce what you *do* what.
2️⃣ Eating is a bonding activity. We share food with the people we enjoy and it’s the same for our dogs! It’s a great way to show a little extra love.
3️⃣It’s a natural behavior. In fact, throughout the history of dogs’ coexistence with humans, scavenging scraps was one of the ways they became domesticated.
4️⃣It can help engagement. I’ve seen dogs that were very aloof and independent towards their owners, show a great deal more attention and engagement after being offered a bit of their snack.
➡️Final thoughts:
•Each dog is different and will respond differently to things. Give it a try and see if it works for you!
•Be mindful if your dog has a sensitive stomach! You can always use treats instead.
•Teach them what *to* do during mealtimes! Laying down relaxing is appropriate.
•If you have a highly food motivated dog, it may be beneficial to feed them beforehand and teach them to wait till the end of the meal to reduce frustration.
•If you’re concerned about extra calories, opt for fruit and veggies.
•Portions: We’re talking a bite or two, not half of your steak!

Bella struggles with reactivity and has a hard time relaxing especially in unfamiliar areas or when there’s lots of activity around her. We’re working on helping her relax by rewarding her checking in and not fixating on other things. Super proud of her progress!
This is why we never need nail trims 😂 #ddrgermanshepherd #saturdaystyle #workingdogsofinstagram #canineenrichment

These two could do this all day! Ivy is a working line shepherd with tons of energy and drive so she is usually a bit difficult to handle. Giving her a job by letting her pull in a harness helps tremendously to channel all that drive and gives her something to focus on. Thanks @joebriatta for letting me work with your amazing dogs!
