👉 There are several reasons why it is important to keep your Yorkie’s nails trimmed:

✅ It can become uncomfortable for a dog to walk on long toenails.

✅ Long nails means more damage to your floors, furniture, screen doors, your yard… the list goes on… Sadness.

✅ Long nails can get caught in blankets, thick carpets, dog beds, etc. If your pup gets his nail stuck, he may have a minor freak-out episode, and end up tearing his nail right off, or hurting his foot/leg in the process.

✅ If the nail is left to grow for a very long time, it will end up curling around the foot, and can grow right into your dogs skin or paw pad, resulting in intense pain, and probable infection.

✅ A dog’s paw pads give them “grip” on slippery surfaces, if their nails are too long, it will prevent their pads from being able to gain enough traction. This can result in slips, and injuries to your pet.

☝️ There will be times in the life of your Yorkie when you will need to change their food. Yorkies have very sensitive stomachs so no matter what the reason, it’s important that any change in diet is done by replacing their old food with the new one veeeery slowly to avoid digestive upset.

Here’s how to change your dog’s food without causing an upset stomach:

✅ don’t wait until you just have a meal or two left of the old food. You will be changing over slowly by replacing some of their old food with the new over time so you want to be sure to have 2 weeks of the old food on hand.

✅ to help prevent stomach upset it’s a good idea to use a digestive aid. Give your Yorkies Bene-Bac gel the day before you introduce the new food, the first day they are eating the new food as part of their meals, and then again a few days later if they are experiencing any stomach issues.

✅ we all know that Yorkies are finicky eaters and many of them will turn their noses up at anything new. To make them think the new food is something special, the day before I start the transition I hand feed a few pieces of the new food in place of their regular treats.

The best way to maintain the health of a small dog is to establish routines. It means knowing when to feed and walk your dog, when to play with it and when to sleep/rest. This will help in keeping your dog healthy and set up its daily routine.

Let’s consider the main areas in small dog health: grooming, medical care, exercise, and nutrition.

✅ Keep vaccinations up to date. As with regular veterinary check-ups, your small dog also needs regular vaccination appointments to ensure that they’re up-to-date on their shots and preventative medications like monthly heartworm medication.

✅ Establish a grooming routine. It is very important to keep your dog clean and well-groomed because hygiene is a very big factor in small dog health.

✅ Trimming your dog’s nails is not something you should do every once in a while - it's important to do it regularly so that their nails don't grow too long and curl. This could lead to infections and other kinds of injuries.

✅ Routine dental care is important, so be sure to brush your dog's teeth daily by using dog-specific toothbrushes and toothpaste.

✅ Regular veterinary check-ups. Just like larger dogs, small dogs need regular veterinary examinations to ensure that they’re staying healthy.

☝️ There are many misconceptions about free-feeding puppies, and we want to cover some of those here.

The most common ones are:
— Puppies can't overeat
— Free feeding isn't harmful to proper joint development
— Free feeding is healthy

Overfeeding causes myriad problems, including:

— Creation of new fat cells. The more fat cells an individual has, the more likely that individual is to be obese

— Diabetes. Overfeeding increases the likelihood of insulin resistance, which is the first stage before we see diabetes.

— Rapid bone growth. Fast bone growth is associated with hip dysplasia and other joint problems.

Overfeeding a puppy causes gas, which can be very painful. It can also lead to diarrhea or constipation, which are painful and can quickly endanger a puppy’s life.

The possibility for overfeeding starts when the puppies start eating — at weaning. We all know early nutrition is critical, an important aspect of nutrition. It's not just what we feed our dogs and puppies but HOW we feed them.

A lot of breeders fear calls where they get requests to re-home a puppy. Some feel as if it’s a failure on their part, some resent the family, and others feel it’s an imposition.

Re-homes happen, and they are a good way to show the world you are a responsible breeder and most importantly to do the right thing for the dog.

Let’s consider the most important tips about re-homing a dog:

✅ Know your priorities. Remember, your primary goal is to help the dog. If you keep this in your mind, things will always work out. Your next priority after that is the satisfaction of the families you work with and your reputation.

✅ Do not make a re-home about money. Money is sometimes involved, and that’s ok, but remember, the dog’s well-being is primary.

✅ If money is involved, ensure you adhere to the re-homing terms in your contract. There are many ways to handle re-homing finances, but some common ways include having a small re-homing fee (usually $100-200) and then offering the original family any re-homing fee you get from the new family, less hard costs (vet bills, training, etc).

✅ Follow up daily until things seem to settle well (this can be a couple of days to a week or longer if there are health or behavioral issues), then weekly for a few weeks.

✅ Support the original family. Many will feel guilt and/or worry about the dog in its new situation. Thank them for doing the right thing for the dog, let them know you don't blame them for anything, and share happy news, photos, or videos of the dog in its new home.

There are a lot of myths floating around about the safety and efficacy of puppy vaccines, as well as the use of nomographs and nosodes. Let’s consider 4 most common myths about puppy vaccines.

✅ Most puppies will be exposed to parvo at the vet clinic. This is alarmist at best. While it's possible, most vets have robust cleaning protocols and quarantine protocols for active infections. In addition to being incorrect, this myth, fails to consider the possibility of at-home vet visits and breeder-administered first vaccines, such as Neopar.

✅ Only 30% will be protected with an early vaccine. What this means is that for puppies whose maternal protection wears off at 6 weeks, there is protection conferred by an early vaccine.

✅ Maternal antibodies protect the puppies. Yes, maternal antibodies can neutralize vaccines if they are present in the puppy. That's why we give a series of vaccines to our puppies — to cover that period of risk. Other than not conferring long-term immunity, there is no harm to the puppy by having maternal antibodies neutralize a vaccine.

✅ Nomographs eliminate my risk. Some breeders use nomographs to help predict risk windows. Unfortunately, they don't provide the information many breeders think they do and do not guarantee immunity in puppies.

The thought of bringing a Poodle home can be quite exciting for any new or experienced dog owner. Many people might be prepared to buy their food, and organize their vaccinations, toys, bedding, but what about their bath routine?

When it comes to bathing a Poodle, there are typically six steps to doing so, two of which have been mentioned above. In total, they are the following:

✅ Preparing the Poodle
✅ Preparing their bathing facilities
✅ Shampooing
✅ Rinsing
✅ Applying cream rinse or conditioner
✅ Drying

On average, you should bathe a Poodle every 3 weeks. This allows their skin and coat to reset back to normal. There is a process regardless of the amount of exercise or how much dirt or debris is collected in their coat.

Since Poodles are known as picky eaters, many owners are worried about their Poodle’s diet.

A lot of human foods are full of salt, fat, and sugar. These processed ingredients can mess up a Poodle’s caloric intake and digestive system. The good news is that there are several human foods that you can feed your Poodle along with nutritionally balanced dog food.

Poodles eat soft, cooked chicken, beef, turkey, salmon, and lamb. They can also eat green beans, peas, spinach, carrots, zucchini, pumpkin, broccoli, sweet potatoes, celery, cucumbers, and white potatoes.

Aim for low-sodium dishes that include natural proteins from plain meats or cooked eggs, gluten-free grains, fruits, and vegetables to give your pet a home-cooked meal.
Try cooking and blending some protein with vegetables to give your pet a great combination of fresh nutrients:

✅ Broccoli and Salmon
✅ Carrots and Chicken
✅ Cod and Sweet Potato
✅ Turkey, Peas, or Corn
✅ Green Beans and Pork
✅ Unsalted Peanut Butter and Quinoa

A well-groomed Poodle is a beautiful thing. Poodles require the right tools and grooming care to keep their curly coats tangle-free. Choosing the right brush can seem overwhelming. There are many options with different weights, features, pins, and brush head sizes.

Discover these 3 best brushes for Poodle hair that will have your pet looking like a winner in no time.

✅ Chris Christensen Slicker Brush. It is one of the best brushes for easily and painlessly eliminating tough knots and tangles that can snowball into a matted nightmare. It has some of the longest and softest pins available on the market. It’s also manufactured from quality materials in Germany.

✅ Hertzko Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush. If there’s one thing we all love, it’s an appliance that cleans itself. While this brush runs a little more expensive than other kinds of brushes, the self-cleaning feature combined with fine, bent pins that work on all coats to easily and gently detangle and remove dirt, dander, and knots from a Poodle’s undercoat makes it worth the money.

✅ Hartz Groomer’s Best Combo Dog Brush. Its steel bristles excel at removing small, matted knots from long, thick, or curly coats. This makes it an ideal Poodle grooming tool. Flip it over, and the nylon bristle side teases out natural oils and spreads them smoothly through the hair to create a soft, shiny, and healthy coat.

One of the most frequent questions dog owners ask is, “How often should I bathe my dog?”

Frenchies should be bathed once every 1 to 2 months. Although many French Bulldog owners say they wash them about 5 or 6 times a year, or as needed, most owners find the as needed comes more often than 5 or 6 times a year.

Does your dog love to roll in the grass? If you need to clean not only his paws but also his fur when you get back from the outside, then you have full hands of work. Since it’s not healthy to bathe your Frenchie every day with water and shampoo, you should consider other options for cleaning.

As a replacement, you can use a dry cleaning foam and wet towel to help remove all the dirt from their fur. Use products suitable for sensitive skin and rich in herbs that provide essential and healthy moisture.
