Another opossum rescue! My neighbor @eckfordstreetwhiskers noticed an adolescent opossum huddled behind some trash cans, not far from the last baby oppossum we rescued. As I am not an opossum expert, I consulted the experts at @cottontailcottagewildlife and @wild_by_nurture who confirmed this little one didnāt look well. Next thing you know, I had an opossum in a carrier in my bathroom.
After a sleepover at @wildbirdfund last night, our little friend traveled to Ithaca to @wild_by_nurture wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation center where our last opossum rescue āCharlieā is still undergoing treatment for lead poisoning.
I love these creatures and am so happy there are people out there who are dedicated to their care and survival !
Should we extend our ābrandā and launch Greenpoint Opossums?! I donāt hate it ! ;-)

Home Slice was neutered and vetted today and now needs a foster or forever home! Rescued from behind a Greenpoint pizza shop šlast week (home of the @gptpizzacats ), Homie is a young friendly boy who enjoys the simple pleasures of indoor life.
Likes: greeting you at the door, watching TV with you,being your body double for daily tasks, holding paws / hands for snack time.
Dislikes: being excluded from social hangs, large needles, light beer.

This morning I said goodbye to Nathan, just nine days after rescuing him from the street where heād been left in a box inside of a bag. For nine days we tried to piece together clues of what had happened to him, what was wrong with him, and most importantly - how to help him.
It still doesnāt entirely makes sense. He seemed young and yet his kidneys were failing and so was his heart. One theory is that he might have ingested some kind of toxin or had prolonged exposure that, left untreated, led to kidney toxicity. Or, he was just a really old cat with really good teeth, thus making us believe he was younger than his actual years. Weāll never know. But he was suffering and declining the past couple days, and it was clear that it was time to say goodbye.
Thank you to everyone who gave us a chance to give him a chance. Without your support, we wouldnāt even have the means to say āyesā when asked to show up for a cat like Nathan, knowing the outcome is unknown. And everyone at @veterinary_emergency_group in Williamsburg who rallied to save Nathan from the moment he arrived - thank you.
We love you, Nathan. Sweet dreams.
Over the weekend we discovered a family of black cats - šāā¬ šāā¬šāā¬šāā¬šāā¬two adults and three adolescent kittens - all living among parked cars outside a Greenpoint auto shop. According to the shop owner, three of the kittens have disappeared and we know that can mean any number of things šæ
The kittens are old enough to start making kittens of their own so the clock is ticking to get them - and their parents - spayed / neutered ASAP. The problem? We are now paying $100+ per spay /neuter because of the shortage of appointments at the @aspca clinic. The other problem? Limited ability and resources to take in more cats/kittens and not enough fosters and adopters who are willing to work with shy cats (it takes patience and time).

āChewyā belongs to a local smoke shop and weāve been trying for some time to get the owners to work with us to get the cat neutered and vaccinated. Finally, they reached out for help when they noticed two large wounds on the back of Chewyās legs. I visited the shop and found Chewy dozing in the snack aisle - just another cute bodega cat that you might not realize is actually in some pain.
I brought Chewy to the vet this morning, where, in addition to getting his wounds treated, Chewy will be neutered and vaccinated. Heāll need a clean home environment in which to recover for 5-7 days so we need a short-term foster as well.
While we know there is an argument for removing him from the store, thereās also a good reason not to : they will just get another cat. Since Chewy otherwise has decent living conditions at the store, we will continue working with the owners to ensure he gets the best possible care. They are covering some of his vet bill today, and we are footing the rest.

Isuzu is a local Greenpoint community cat who hasnāt been to a vet in years and we could tell his health is in decline. Heās lost weight, his fur is matted, and he generally doesnāt look well.
Even though we have neither the space, time or funds to take on another cat, it was paining us to see his obvious decline in the sweltering heat so we scooped him up a few days ago for a visit to the vet.
Now we need a place for him to rest indoors while we await results and raise money for his care. We need both a foster and funds for this old Greenpoint graybie !!!
Heās still a bit shy but will do just about anything for a meat tube treat, or any tasty treat really ! He is fiv / felv negative and likes other cats. Like a lot of our cats and kittens, Isuzu will lose his temporary home on Wednesday (holiday!) and now we are challenged to find him a new foster home.

Rescued from Hooper Street, this little fighter needed the name of a champion š
LeBron is at @veterinary_emergency_group where heās getting emergency care. Heās perked up a little and we are still running tests. Both eyes are crusted shut and the fear is that there is an abscess (severe infection) in one that will require enunciation. Hang in there, LeBron. We love you.
Whatever the outcome, we will need to go back for the rest of his team - his siblings, his mom, and any other cats that live in the yard. Spay/neutering the adults is the only way to prevent this kind of suffering from happening over and over and over.

Tonightās mission was to rescue one badly injured cat. Since arriving almost two hours ago, Iāve watched two intact males, one friendly nursing mom and four kittens eat in/ under the traps. The injured one hasnāt shown up yet.
Itās extremely frustrating. I canāt trap the kittens right now because I have two other older kittens I need to trap immediately after this and am already worried about where those kittens will go - we are at capacity and adoptions are slow. And I canāt trap the adults because we donāt have any spay/neuter appointments until the end of the month and we already have so many kittens that need to be fixed.
Now what? Well, Iāll definitely be back in the morning to try again for the injured cat, and hopefully can figure out a plan for the rest of them.

Who wouldnāt want to come home to MARGO in their bed?! Rescued from beneath parked cars in Midtown Manhattan, Margo is now around five months old and lives for cuddles and pets from her foster mom. Day or night, rain or shine - you can rely on Margo to be ready for some love and purrs.

We closed intake because we are just too overwhelmed, and then got a message about this poor cat that showed up on the sidewalk in front of a Greenpoint apartment building. No one seems to know the cat. She is hungry and dirty and, strangely, her coat is shaved.
We are en route. Hopefully she just wandered off from her home and can be reunited. If not - We will need a foster for her.

Itās become a tradition (unintentionally) that we take on some of the most urgent rescue cases right before or during a holiday weekend. This Memorial Day weekend has been no exception.
Introducing, Wounded Warrior. He showed up T someoneās back window as if asking for help and when he walked away, it became clear why.
Unfortunately it wasnāt as easy as opening the window and letting him in because cats rarely make things that easy.
Weāll show you how we got him in Part 2.

Our little Angel was stabilized last night and took a turn for the worse this morning so we rushed her to the emergency vet. There we learned that this tiny creature is not a kitten, she is an older cat who is the size of a kitten - perhaps so small due to years of malnutrition and neglect. She is severely anemic so we are admitting her to @vergbrooklyn for 24/7 supportive care and a transfusion. Itās possible this is late stage kidney disease but we wonāt have an accurate read on her bloodwork until sheās more stable. We also donāt know what was all over her face and paws - some kind of oil or mud or a combination. I donāt even want to think about how that happened.
Still, she is in great spirits - purring and giving butt lifts for pets and scritches, even while being poked and prodded by strangers with needles.
Itās all incredibly sad and yet we are remaining hopeful. And we havenāt even begun to address the other new rescue who came to us last night. More on that later.
Thank you for the outpouring of support for Angel, and for all of our work and all of these cats that deserve a chance.
Saami desperately needs to get out of a crate and into a loving foster home. Sadly, he was diagnosed with both FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) and this limits his options to be around other cats šæ He is on the wait list for a sanctuary where he can have other cat friends and until then he needs an stress-free environment place where he can stretch his legs and relax.
Saami is one of several cats in our care that needs a foster home so if you canāt foster this guy - ask us about others in need!
