To Celebrate Nowruz 1401 (2022 CE)

Chogān, or polo in English, is a sport that was invented by Iranians around 600 BCE, and has somehow survived not just history but also the disinformation and/or re-attribution of roots that is unfortunately so often applied to things which originate in Iran, so as to still be understood as a sport of Iranian origin, and is now a worldwide sport (often played by aristocrats). Having said that, for example, the site Historic UK states, “the first recorded tournament was in 600 B.C. (between the Turkomans and the Persians – the Turkomans were victorious).”
(Turkoman did not exist in the area till around 1500 years later 🤫).

Naqsh-e Jahan Square was built during the Safavid dynasty (1501 - 1736) as a polo field (though it was also sometimes put to use for other purposes) for the entertainment of royalty and the people, so there was special significance in playing it there and on Nowruz!

Naqsh-e Jahan Square is considered the oldest and in that respect greatest existing polo field in the world. 🌍
