ow to Pick the Right Food for Your Pet Rabbit.
Once you’ve set up a safe space for your pet, the next step is to ensure that all of his necessities are available.

First and foremost, you’ll need to have a water source for him. If you keep his cage in an area where he’ll have access to a sink, you can leave the water there for easy access. However, if your pet is housed in a room away from other animals or people, you’ll need to provide him with water elsewhere. This can be done either with a water bowl or a water bottle, whichever you prefer.

Water should be changed daily to avoid bacteria buildup. When it comes to food, your bunny should have access to hay at all times.

Hay is an integral part of your rabbit’s diet, as it will provide them with essential nutrients they need to keep their digestive system running smoothly. Your pet will also need daily greens to supplement their diet in the form of lettuce or spinach. This should be given to them after they have eaten their hay for the day.

In addition to hay and greens, your pet will need a small number of fresh vegetables, as well as a small amount of pellet food. However, your rabbit’s diet should be mostly hay and greens, so the pellets are mostly a supplement.

Most rabbit experts recommend that you avoid feeding your pet fruits, as they are too high in sugar and can cause serious health problems.

How to Take Care of Rabbits: Guide for New Owners

Keeping a Rabbit Indoors
Indoor rabbits, also known as house rabbits, should have a safe, comfortable enclosure with adequate bedding. Many owners keep their rabbits in a large cage; it should have a minimum of 12 square feet of space. You could also use a secure pet playpen to confine your rabbit to a specific area. Either way, it's important to give your rabbit at least an hour of supervised time outside the cage each day for exercise.

Real Life Bunnies Shouldn’t be Purchased Without Careful Thought
Bunnies are so charming and make such good companions, it is not surprising that they are the third most popular pets in Canada, right behind dogs and cats. It is also not surprising that they are the third most frequently abandoned pets.

Thousands of rabbits are taken to animal shelters right after Easter, the day on which these little creatures are so often given as gifts to children. Even worse, many are abandoned and left to fend for themselves—and that’s bad because these are animals of prey who have no idea how to survive in the wild. In many communities, dumping unwanted rabbits is illegal.

Bunny Care 101
We were heading to the pet store to purchase two bunnies and when I called a big box pet store to see if they had any bunnies in stock, the sales associate was actually the one who suggested I try to contact a Bunny Rescue. You guys know I am all about rescuing animals ,but honestly I had never heard of a bunny rescue. Made the call, got directions and two hours later we were driving home with 2 bunnies from the rescue. I picked up some helpful tips that I wanted to pass on to you, just in case you cave you will be getting some bunnies anytime soon.

Is a Rabbit Right for You?

The first thing to consider before you get a pet rabbit is that they have a long lifespan so be prepared to care for them long term. Rabbits are also unique creatures who form tight bonds with their families, but they also have some quirks you should know about. They require routine vet care from a good rabbit vet and are not low maintenance pets if you are doing things right. If you are prepared for all the unique qualities and needs of rabbits, you will be able to fully enjoy the wonderful companionship they can offer.

Healthy Habits
In terms of diet, rabbits are strict herbivores with constantly growing teeth. Their diet should consist of primarily hay (Timothy or Orchard Grass are best, NOT Alfalfa). Hay is THE BEST food to wear down constantly growing teeth. Next, your rabbit should be fed a wide assortment of fresh veggies and dark leafy greens. Lastly, they can get a small amount of pellets per day (usually no more than 1/8 of a cup).

When choosing pellets, stay away from the party mixes that have brightly colored treats in them. These are just junk food!

Rabbits are relatively clean creatures and do not need bathing. They can often benefit from regular nail trims and occasional brushing to remove excess fur, especially during season changes. If you notice soft stools in the cage or stuck to your bunny’s bottom, call your veterinarian as this may be a sign of a potentially life threatening condition!

Hopefully, this has provided you with some basic information on rabbits. If you would like to continue your research, www.rabbit.org is a good place to start, as well as contacting your veterinarian.
