Todays appreciation post goes to our favorite little red headed mare, Athena. While she hasn't been with us long(not even a year) this little lady is quickly becoming the best little trail buddy a girl could ask for. Whether she is leading a group, or taking up the caboose, this horse loves to be outside meandering though the field. We can't wait to see how she takes to hunting and hunter pacing this year. ๐Ÿ’

The horses and ponies are all starting to look a a little less feral in preparation for their trip to NC for the Sedgefield Performance Trials. The little barn elves have been hard at work bathing, mane pulling and clipping.

It's a little hard with the 30 degree temps but the horses will thank us when we get down there!

For those that don't know, the trials are for hounds and we get the pleasure of watching the our local hunt, the Limestone Creek Hunt, compete against some of the top hunts in the country. There will be hundreds of horses and wonderful large mixed pack of hounds. Last year one of my favorite hounds, jaybird, got huntsman pick.

We shall see how this year goes!

Tally ho!!

๐Ÿ’ŒTime for another appreciation post for our tiniest but mightiest lesson ponies, Ellesmera Heart of Dixie๐Ÿ’
Dixie is by Ellesmera Ali Baba, our families stallion, and she is the leadline, walk trot deluxe.
Dixie is owned and loved by Asher, but he graciously shares his pony for the whole barn family to enjoy.
Dixie's story is a Cinderella one. As a yearling, as many famous ponies do, Dixie was sent to a trainer to learn to compete at Devon in hand for the hunter breeding classes. She didn't make it to the famed blue oval arena, as she recieved an injury and was in poor health when she was sent home. We almost lost her to shipping fever, and while she overcame that, we thought she would never be able to be ridden.
In the years that followed as Dixie lived as a pasture pony and was recovering from her injury, young Avery Plows was learning how to to be a rider, and a horsewoman, and a pony jock. She is tough, and loves to learn so we decided a green pony would be the way to continue her Equestrian education. Dixie had spent years growing, and when looking over the herd, she was deemed the first choice to try, even though she had never had a saddle on before and we weren't sure she was completely up to the task. With time, patience and love, Avery, under the guidance of Char, slowly took the feral pony from cinders to ball gowns.

And, then in comes our tiniest but mightiest riders Natalie! After several rides, Devon became a dream once again, but this time in a totally different way. She was washed and clipped(boy what a battle that was!) And braided up and loaded on the trailer to go walk the streets of PA to the horse show.

When Dixie walked into that blue arena, tears abounded. The princess pony made it finally!

And now it's a tradition ๐Ÿฉต
You'll see many pictures this year of Asher and Dixie owning that oval arena!

We love you Dixie!

It's been a hot minute since we have shared another of our favorite 4 legged partners at Tally Ho Farm.
This "young" lady certainly cannot be dismissed!
Maggie May might be an older lass, But she definitely has been known to jump a little big a time or two, even though most of her charges are under the age of 6. Ground poles and up downs are her middle name, but she loves to take a canter around the derby field occasionally.
We are so thankful that this little pony has blessed our doorstep.
Watch for photos of her all dolled up for Devon this year, as her and a couple other pony pals will be gracing the blue oval arena for leadline this year.

Horse show clinic day today!
We talked about disciplines, including dressage, show jumping and hunter seat equitation, and preparation such as bathing, which was way to cold to do today sadly. Making a packing list was a top priority as well. Boy was there alot of tack cleaning, and a whole lotta of teamwork and horsemanship, too ๐Ÿ’–
We have the best group of kids and parents a barn fam could ask for.

This is what it's all about.
For anyone that took pictures please feel free to share. I was a terrible picture taker today!

We didn't forget about spotlighting our wonderful lesson horses, we were just a little "short" on time with the snow! Next on our our list of our favorite partners is Ring Around, aka Ro Po, aka pocket rocket! Don't let her small stature fool you, she's can keep up with the big Dawgs. This pony hunts like a boss, jumps like boss, and has been known to take a few walk trotters or two around the arena.

Rosie is for sure a barn favorite, and is loved by so many. We can't thank Alicia Quinn enough for connecting us with our mini Pegasus ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐ŸฆŠ๐ŸฆŠ Feeling a little foxy here at Tally Ho Farm.
We have a great group of Jrs now that love the great outdoors, including 1 or 2 that are preparing to compete in a quaifier for the Jr National Field Hunter Championship, but we cannot wait to instill the love of this sport to others!

Thank you MFHA for promoting and supporting sportsmanship, horsemanship and outdoorsmanship for our youth!
Here's to the future!

MFHAGuest Speakers Spur Excellent Discussion on Engaging Junior Members in New York at Annual Meeting!
Susan Gentry, Chair of the MFHA Pack Junior Committee and MFH at Cloudline Hounds, Carla Babcock, Chair of the Junior North American Field Hunter Championship (JNAFHC), and Marian Wahlgren, Development Director of the US Pony Club gave a successful presentation on ways to get young members involved to ensure a future of our sport.
โ€œBetter Togetherโ€ are the words from President of the MFHA, Penny Denegre and was the theme for the Annual Meeting held in New York regarding our junior members. Pack Junior Chairman, Susan Denny Gentry MFH of Cloudline Hounds reviewed all the programs that are currently available through the MFHA. The most recently added program is the Margaret Lindsley Warden Award Program, in which junior members complete a badge like that of scouting organizations, and a brief essay on the importance of conservation and the enjoyment of riding in nature. This program is
sponsored by Eleanor Warriner, MFH of Hillsboro Foxhounds and awards district and national winners cash of $10,500 annually. Also featured, was the Junior Hound Judging program, Fairly Hunted Award and โ€œMy First Foxhuntโ€ coloring book. All information regarding these programs is available on the MFHA website here: https://mfha.com/pack-junior/
Marian Wahlgren, Development Director of the United States Pony Club, Inc., covered the Foxhunting Pony Club programs that are available including the Foxhunt Recognition program, the Live Oak Foxhunting Challenge Award, and the Foxhunting Exchange Program.
In closing, Carla Babcock reviewed the Junior North American Field Hunter Championship program including the current and new categories juniors can compete in. She also reviewed the schedule and announced the finals competition to take place on November 14-15, 2025, with Moore County Hounds in Southern Pines, NC.
All speakers encouraged hunts to include all the junior programs and work together to engage our juniors. More on how to encourage and educate junior members will be provided in the Spring issue of Covertside magazine.

๐Ÿ’™Winter views ๐Ÿฉต

There is a study about Finland being the happiest country on the planet even with below zero temps and very little daylight.

I'm trying to adopt their perspective. Even though I don't think they have horses ๐Ÿคฃ

But, it is kind of pretty out there.

Here's to appreciating what we have๐Ÿป

For Valentines day, it's only fitting that we share as our featured lesson horse, Callie, AKA the Dutchess. Show name, More Hearts Than Mine.
This lady, who we have no idea her origins, only that she came of the trailer swinging like a prize fighter( we couldnt go up to her in her stall for about a month without her trying to bite) or even her age(at this point estimated to be perpetually 28), she has shown more people how to ride in the past 5 years with grace and dignity then we can even count thanks to her ability to take everything in stride and to keep going.

From teaching people to canter, to leading trail rides, to packing Char on her first adventure in a field hunter championship, to showing people how to truly make a good turn in the jumper ring, and whipping in on the hunt field, this mare truly does it all. And even with her aging, she says she isn't done yet. She still is a spit fire under saddle when we're galloping outside, and gives the young horses a quick ear back when they are being fresh on the "pony" line.
To this day she still hates a stall, but you'll find her on the cross ties getting ready to go on an outside adventure with one of her charges.
Thank you Callie, for being the ultimate heart horse for so many ๐Ÿฅฐ

Happy Valentines Day everyone!
