🌸 Spotted a Ruby-throated hummingbird fluttering around the cottage garden this morning! These tiny treasures are the only hummingbird species native to NYC.
With peak migration southward just beginning, keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks—more of these fluttering friends will be passing through, making their way over the city and around the park 💙💚.

Our grass soccer fields endure a lot of wear and tear from foot traffic during the eight months they're open for play each year. Throughout the warm seasons, our Sports Field team performs general maintenance tasks such as overseeding, fertilizing, and re-sodding as needed. During the winter months, the Sports Field team takes the time to assess each field thoroughly. They undertake tasks such as top-dressing, seeding, and covering with a growth blanket. In December, they top-dressed and overseeded various soccer fields at the park with a rye/bluegrass mix. To facilitate grass growth in cold weather, each field is covered with a growth blanket over the seeded areas. Did you know that growth blankets create a greenhouse effect where they're placed? This helps keep soil at high enough temperatures for grass growth even in freezing conditions. Before the grass soccer fields reopen on April 1st, the Sports Field team will remove the blankets, revealing fresh, green, and healthy grass eagerly awaiting the return of players!
Happy Groundhog Day! Do you agree with Staten Island Chuck that we will have an early spring? Comment your prediction!
It may be the off-season, but our Sports Field team hits the ground just as hard during the winter! They are revitalizing dozens of fields here at the park, including baseball and softball fields. Hours of play and weather take their tolls on our clay infields causing shifts and dips. Our team surveys, analyzes and corrects these by hauling loads of clay to adjust the grade and pitch. This winter alone, the team has impressively hauled 60 + loads of clay! After the clay is hauled onto the fields, each pile is flattened with a skid steer. Once each pile is spread out, the crew then will box blade the infield to smooth out imperfections. This process not only fixes the fields but makes them more resilient against future movement, resulting in less cancelations and field closures for YOU!
Stay tuned to see what else the Sports Field department tackles during the colder months ⚽️🏈⚾️🏑 #WinterWednesday
What goes on at the Urban Farm in the winter? As temperatures drop, our farmers harvest late-season crops such as parsnips, shiitake mushrooms, and sweet potatoes. These are then donated and integrated into programming events such as at the Little Sisters of the Assumption in East Harlem. This year, an impressive 60 pounds of sweet potatoes were harvested. In the initial weeks of winter our farmers placed the sweet potatoes in an 80-86 degree space with high humidity for a week-long curing process. This process forms a protective layer while converting the potatoes' starches into sugars. It's said that you should wait a few weeks after harvest to eat a sweet potato, as the starches continue transforming into sugars, resulting in an even sweeter taste! 😋
Flurries have arrived at Randall’s! ❄️
