Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts

Manhattan ACC Cat Volunteers: The Cats that Capture our Hearts This page was created by Manhattan NYCACC volunteers to celebrate the love we share for the MACC cats. We hope it helps them find loving homes.

As volunteers and fosters, we hope to bring our experiences with the cats at Animal Care Centers of NYC to those who may want to adopt, foster, or rescue them. These are personal stories shared from our time spent with the cats. We are not experts or professionals in cat behavior. We are cat lovers that dedicate our time to caring for stray and abandoned cats needing homes. We fall in love every d

ay. We care about the cats, we dote on them, we worry about them. We welcome you to join us in helping them to find their forever homes. To Adopt a Cat from NYCACC

A volunteer writes: FeLV+ 4 month old playful kitten Peacoat!
Parka and Peacoat are two adorable, naughty, hilarious, energetic and inseparable four month old peanuts. They share a kennel, sleep together and play, play, play all day long! They are truly a breath of fresh air and a huge source of laugh for us, volunteers and staff, attending to them. One wonders who entertains who? Parka and Peacoat(and another kitten) were found in a basement by a Good Samaritan with 3 others. They had a cold and were brought to the Manhattan Care Center to help them feel better and find them a home. They likely were born to a mama cat who was FeLV+ and Peacoat is positive as well. He(Peacoat) recently had a positive FeLV PCR indicating in his case an infection. Parka is FeLV negative. A sibling, adopted and thankfully kept by the adopter is also positive for FeLV. The two little munchkins are growing up in a kennel(they are very sociable with all the attention they get) and a home sweet home, as a single pair for now would be a wonderful gift to both of them. Parka and Peacoat are dreaming of a family...May be it can be with You! Right now, both little boys look good and are very active. Their prolonged uRI has resolved. PEACOAT is the white one(5.5 lbs). Parka wts 4.5lbs
Level1 kittens of course

Foxtrot (215991-13 yo IF)is rarely in hiding(she is hard to miss in her splashing orange dress). She does not want to miss a beat of the action. She is out there, at her door or scanning her surroundings, laying on top of her (unused) hide out. She is on the look for opportunities to make a friend and getting a delicious snack. Foxtrot is the cutest ginger girl always ready when you are, for treats, food and mostly the arms of her visitor where she would nest for ever and ever(see video). She is so dear, a senior full of s***k and personality but nevertheless in need of TLC. She was a bit lost upon arrival at the care center but it did not take long for her to fall back on her four. Foxtrot is quite a trooper. She was found roaming for days in the hallways of an apartment building and brought to us by a Good Samaritan. Foxtrot needs a home, a safe, caring and loving place to spend her golden years. If you love seniors, understand them and accept that they do usually come with health issues, Foxtrot is the one you might consider to help and love. Foxtrot is waiting, hopeful at the Manhattan Care Center.
Foxtrot is adorable, found roaming an apt building for 3 days and came in underwt at 5pounds, dehydrated, with marked dental disease, anemia and likely chronic kidney disease fo which she should be placed if rescued or adopted on a renal diet. She is highly sociable and such an arm cat. She loves people.

Milo(13 yo NM-214774-15LBS)) has come a long way since his arrival at the care center. He is a thirteen year old senior, well fed and well groomed who until now has only known the care and the love of his owner. His past vanished in just a few hours when he was brought to the care center. At first, he did not want to face his new reality and passively accepted my strange hand without purring or leaning and always looking down...Milo is a survivor, though and hopes that sometimes, down the line, his path will be brighter. He is such a gentle soul, quiet, well mannered and now welcoming of my soft words and caresses, closing his eyes and dreaming of a home sweet home instead of a cage. He is quite handsome too and is fine letting me make him even more beautiful with a shiny red bow. Milo so deserves your attention and the right to spend his golden years, safe, loved and cared for while making his new family glad to have rescued him. Milo is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
Milo is with us as his owner was taken into care. He was so withdrawn at the beginning of his stay but really changed a lot for the better. I really like him a lot and he is quite welcoming of the attention. Like most seniors, he has dental issues and has also a heart murmur 3/6. No proBNP was done but all his other labs are nl. He is such a quiet and gentle soul....
Level2 as he was quite shy for a few days.

Cream Puff is a very attractive, lively and uber friendly senior gentleman who is eager to meet his visitors. He is so elegant in his perfect dreamsicle coat and his manners are all together so gentle. Cream Puff knows all about what a pet lover likes and he is a master at leaning, purring, tap dancing and making sure his guests feel welcome. I love the way he stretches his neck for more scratches and how smartly he wears a scarf like a fashion model. Cream Puff is with us as his owner passed away and although his past life is a mystery, we can guess that he was well cared for and loved. Cream Puff is a sweet ten year old who despite some health issues could have quite a number of good years ahead of him to give and receive love. Adopting senior pets who fell out of luck is a wonderful deed that will provide them with a warm retirement home filled with shared love. Cream Puff is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
Cream Puff is 10 year old and neutered. A real cutie, up and about despite a cold he has for over one week. Still with a great appetite and always, always happy to see a friendly face. His proBNP came back as 596 which is high(max 270) indicating a stressed myocardium. He has a 3-4/6 heart murmur., the rest of his labs are normal. A Level1 kitty.

Sonny(8 yo intact male-214694), what's your story? Another mystery cat...brought by a mysterious person to a fire station...Yep, just like that... Sonny is a good looking ginger dressed in vibrant colors. He was quite shy for a few days after his arrival but he is now all ready for meets and greets. Who does not love a red cat? Sonny is so worth getting to know!. There is still some shyness in him. He is a little wary of sudden noises and moves but enjoys his visitors. Just entice him with a few treats, say a few soft words and scratch the tip of his nose. Sonny, resting in his main cabin, will move forward and lean into pets. His next stop...Your lap! Sonny is quite a sweet middle aged gentleman who might not have had the TLC you and me would bestow on a pet, but he is one handsome fellow who appreciates company and all what comes with it... Sonny is ready for a wonderful life to start with ..you. Come and meet him very soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
Sonny has good teeth except for one that needs to be pulled, a major obstacle for most adopters unfortunately. He has normal labs- FIV and FeLV negative. He is really a very cute and gentle, sweet cat who does come on the lap. Clearly, did not get the best care from his prior owners. He just came out of a prolonged URI.
A Level2 kitty as he was very shy upon arrival although very good in medical

A volunteer writes:
When I lifted his cubby's cover, I did not expect to see such a beautiful feline with tomcat cheeks and one gorgeous blue eye. The cherry on top, all snow white Dey Dey(7 yo intact male-215902) was such a sweet, well mannered, trusting and sweet kitty who so much wanted to be my friend. I totally fell in love! Dey Dey is a gentle cat, a tinsy winsy timid but curious and eager to be with people. He loves to be petted, leans all the way down to his kennel floor, purrs and closes his eyes in delight when his head, neck and back are being scratched. He looks so dreamy, content and peaceful when he is being cared for. He does not mind being outfitted with a scarf for the photoshoot. Dey Dey is a bit on the thin side and his left ear is twisted by a chronic hematoma which gives him a very unique and attractive look. Dey Dey is really a GOOD cat who aced his behavior evaluation and will make a new owner or family quite happy to have him as a pet.
DeyDey was seen being abandoned in a carrier, all the way downtown by a very hesitant person to do such a thing. A GS picked up the carrier an brought the next day Dey Dey to the MACC. He is underwt at 8lbs, FIV/FeLVnegative, has ear mites(treated), a left chronic aural hematoma and some invisible deformity of the sternum at the xyphoid appendix. No labs available-decent teeth for the age. Dey Dey is a lovely cat who is housed at MACC in the new adoption center.
A Level1 kitty.

URI's infections kill and in particular elderly cats and cats with an underlying debilitating condition, even young individuals. We lost at least at MACC 6 seniors due to URI in this famous November is Adopt a Senior Month. Seniors do not have the energy to fight, they are depressed by all their losses, they are afraid in the environment they live after their relinquishment. Most cats at the shelter have URI's as there are just too many cats. It is like a day care...
Then, you have the younger cats with heart conditions or neurological issues, all prime candidates for severe URI's. ARES 209947, is one of them....Let's not have him follow in the foot steps of cats like Mackerel...
We need more adoptions, more fosterers and I know, so do many other shelters and rescuers. But enough people follow ACC, check the kitties we have, see their issues and mostly see if you can adopt , foster or rescue... Our hearts are broken seeing so many beautiful lives live this earth.

ARES:209947 is a young un-neutered male who has been at the MACC for 5 weeks now, gathering no attention as although a ginger and only one year old, he does have a systolic heart murmur 3/6. His family comprising 2 adults and 2 teens relinquished him as they were too busy with work. He probably never saw a veterinarian and came in underwt at 7lbs. ARES has quite a good owner surrender profile but has been a little fearful at the shelter, mostly in the beg of her stay. He did improve, though, see his video by Taylor. Ares got very early sick with URI and its course is prolonged since November 3. He has gotten progressively worse, is very anorectic, weak and has lost over 2 lbs while he already was so skinny....He also has a lingual and nasal planum ulcer. ARES NEEDS HELP OUTSIDE THE MACCC in order to possible make it. His heart murmur needs to be worked up too, of course. Just putting this little boy here on this site. Anyone can help?

I wonder who came up with this "November is Adopt A Senior Month" Like it would make people or rescue groups adopt or rescue seniors more...Really....November is just like another month when people dump their seniors by the bucket at a shelter or in the street, often in a bad shape, too weak to fight the shelters' cold and ending up dying. Soon, this sweet old man, Chippy, will meet his maker. He is soo sick. We all know that it is easier to adopt or rescue a young and healthy cat. Elderly cats come often with lots of issues, some minor, some major, so it is understandable(fear of loss, costs) that people pass them by. But there are some people out there who do like seniors(last week, a lovely person adopted Lady Haw and her mate Tuffy), know how to care for them but where are they? To wait and wait to adopt/rescue seniors makes the situation worse as the longer they stay in shelter, the higher is the risk for them to become VERY sick and go....And then we say, Fly High, Rest in Peace...Yep.... Can we not do better?

Mrs PATCHES(212208) is a sweet gal, 12 year old and spayed. A bit shy for few days she transformed into an outgoing kitty, happy to be with visitors and quite friendly and welcoming. A very pretty oreo cookie with lovely markings, well mannered and using her LB. Her owner died, yes, another poor soul who I bet would love to see his/her pet ending up in a good home... Mrs Patch is quite sick with URI and I hope she will not end up in medical iso...
She has DZZ 3/4 and her labs are about normal.

November is ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH..One never runs out of seniors...So many owners pass away and friends and offspring can not take them on. Of course, there are also the sudden allergies that pop up in a family...and the housing, etc...
TONI:212442, well, her owner ded and she came with 7 of her housemates to ACC, split between MACC and Queens. All of them beside one(already adopted within days), scared chaps. Toni is 12 and already spayed. I have taken countless photos of her. Pointless to post them, they are all the same and with the same background, the back of her cubby. A statue that sometimes emits a little cry. She allows petting but does not truly leans. I thought I heard a little purr few days ago. I wonder.Likely wishful thinking...She is a Level2* and has severe dental disease. Her labs are nl.

Another couple with SENIORS...November is ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH.....
SPUNKY(212103), 16 year old spayed female and MITTENSBOOTS(212102), 13 year old neutered male. Their owner could not afford their cost and care anymore. SPUNKY has been on the ARL/EPL right away after arrival because of her long standing DM requiring Insulin(kidneys and thyroid are OK-she as senior teeth 3/4). She is an adorable petite gal, really sweet and compliant with her management. A cute little tiger. She loves company. Really great owner surrender profile as well as behavior evaluation. MITTENSBOOTS is a gentle cat with lots of personality. He knows what he wants, getting out of his cage and going home!!! He is very talkative and handsome. He did very well on his behavioral evaluation. I do not see any labs for him and his teeth are decent for a senior.
Spunky is of course in the medical room and MittensBoots is in the new adoption center.

SENIORS come as couples too, most often separated for one reason or another. LADY HAW(212859) and TUFFY(212860), both 12 year old and S&N were relinquished as a new comer in the family was allergic to their dander....They lived with adults only, were very good pets to their owners and liked each other. They never mingled with kids. Housetrained and well behaved. They both earned a LEVEL1 at the care center. They are shy but very social, love company, have no handling issues. Lady Haw is in a kennel in the new adoption center and TUFFY is in the interaction room in the new adoption center and where he has made a very good friend:Serius, also 12 year old. Both boys, Tuffy and Serius have shared their days with middle aged gals and were fine with them. Tuffy is super sweet, has no teeth(so no need for a dentist). I do not see any labs for these 2 seniors. They both eat very well.

Well, here comes another SENIOR: 13 year old CHEX, a little lady abandoned near a police precinct. She was on the ARL/EPL for diabetes mellitus(she was treated with Insulin) and doing poorly, weak and emaciated...She is off the ARL/EPL as her hyperglycemia is in remission. Her appetite is better on FF low carb diet but her weight is not going much up yet. She is active, though and likes to be with people. She is an easy peasy sweet tiny 6 lbs kitty. She really need to go home to put on some more weight and be happy...

KEVIN:213220 is not a senior but a 4 year old dame, a stray, supposedly...A pretty lady of the Siamese type, super friendly, well mannered and with striking skin lesion on her face and neck of ? etiology. She does not scratch herself. She got some Dexa and convenia and the lesion look less angry. She is on a special diet too. Great behavior eval. She is not scared or shy, just an outgoing character.

A volunteer writes:
Just to clarify...Kevin is a gal and even a spayed one....Kevin's past is a mystery alike the many pets we house at the care center. Some people, looking at her will at first and only see the skin lesions affecting her face and neck. I see a beautiful cat underneath and the sweetest soul asking me to fall in love with her. Her coat is thick and as soft as velvet and her eyes are of the tenderest blue. I enjoy my "sessions" with Kevin. She loves petting, purrs very loudly, makes biscuits and headbunts vigorously. She lets you know that she is beaming with your presence! Kevin is truly a treasure in need of TLC and veterinary care that was started at the Manhattan Care Center. She is so worth your attention, care and love. Please, consider this little gem and take her home.

NOVEMBER is ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH.......
Senior #1. I really like her a lot: MUFFIN #207461 who came to us on 8/12/24 as her owner passed away. No info about her was available and she came alone. She was then a little shy but came out of her shell pretty quickly. See her 2 first videos. She was found to have a few bladder stones and placed on a dissolution diet. She also had bad dental disease:3-4/4 PDZZ. She was adopted on 9/8 but unfortunately, some members of the family developed allergies to her dander and she was returned on 10/11. The adopter said that she was very shy, often hid but played gently with the children. It does not seem that she had access to the whole dwelling as she was kept in the home office. She never was taken for dental care.No behavioral issues, LB trained. Her return physical examination was the same but the stones had dissolved. Muffin was a little stressed upon re-arrival at the care center. Holding is not a particularly happy and quiet place....Noisy neighbors, loud noises, stress meowing other cats, etc....That made her stress meow too and occas hiss...She is now, in a kennel in the new adoption center at MACC where she is comfortable and in the quiet and she seems fine there. Of course, what she needs is a home, a calm one and an owner who will love her to pieces. She is very sweet with me and others. She head bunts, purrs, leans, grooms herself. peacefully. She is a treasure of a cat. Her level is 2* as she was still quite uncomfortable when she was assessed, even hissing at times due to (as per my observation to her noisy and unruly neighbors). I never got a hiss from her, just a sweet cat happy to have company. See her third video.
Again, Muffin is a senior, 12 yo and spayed. A low traffic home, rather no small kids would be the best for her. Other pets, we do not know as she never lived with any and may be at her age, a single pet home and be the cherished princess of the home would be best for her.

POTATO:209948 is an endearing little tiger, 3 year old and un-neutered found in a box, in a park by a Good Samaritan on 9/12. He had bilateral hind legs lameness and was very very scared. No fractures, no luxations were found on xrays or physical examination and he remained in observation in the medical room. He was given NSAIDS without improvement and basically ambulates with hinds in crouched position. He is able to go up and down his balcony in his kennel. He is using perfectly well his LB. He clearly counts a lot on his anterior legs to move around but he does not drag his hinds. It does not seem to be muscle atrophy which I guess one would see if it was due to an old injury or congenital???? Potato is not scared anymore and is a REALLY sweet guy, super friendly and welcoming. He is quite cute too. He is now in adoptions and of course, he will not be easy to adopt if at all. People understandably want a pet in mint condition and we can not even say here as we do not know the cause of his problem, if things will get worse or not overtime. Of course, he could also ...get better....He is such a great guy and it is heart breaking to see him in that cage over and over again....
One of the videos shows a little his hinds movement

This little senior is in trouble....13 year old unspayed Wheel of Fortune(211229) came to us with 13 housemates(one kitten was dead on arrival) as their owner passed away. She is very sweet and really enjoys company, comes in the arms and the lap, kisses too. She has a URI and barely eats, she is underweight and loosing weight. Her love for people has not diminished.....I am very worried for her.
A volunteer writes:
Wheel of Fortune is a pretty lady, a wide eyed little tiger in a pastel dress, I met at the Manhattan Care Center. She was a bit reserved(although never in hiding) at first but encouraged by soft words, she quickly trusted her whole self to me, leaning, head bunting and purring, never tired of being petted. Wheel of Fortune is elegant in all her ways, gentle, well mannered and calm. There is something regal about her. Wheel of Fortune is with us (as well as fourteen of her friends) as her owner passed away. She is a bit on the thin side and could use some simple TLC like good nutrition, feeling safe and mostly loved. This should not be too difficult as this sweet and lovely senior is like an delicate flower, ready to be cherished and adored. We dream for Wheel of Fortune to find soon the forever home she so belongs to. Come and meet her very soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
She has otitis externa-r/ ear mites. ceruminous cystomatosis and severe dental disease.
