Your dog can stay in my house in a calm structured environment. They live in my house as my dog does.
I want the dog's human to feel confident that their dog is well taken care of and that the dog's manners are improving every day that they stay here.
There are rules of behavior but lots of freedom. She/he will have plenty of attention and socialization exercises with me and the dogs to create a harmonious co-existence with the dogs in the house.
We aim to create a civilized place for dogs to stay and play when their humans go away. I want them to feel at home.
We want them to feel safe.
My dog Edy and I make that happen.
There are toys and blankets that are cleaned regularly for your dog’s comfort. There are two sofas that are dog friendly.
Bring a favorite toy if you want. The dogs are taught not to be overly possessive and non-aggressive using positive gentle techniques”. Be aware that dogs sometimes (often) chew up toys, so there’s no guarantee that the toy will survive.
I’ve sewn many stuffed toys back together.
Dogs are spoken to assertively but calmly and kindly.
They are taught to obey basic commands such as no, sit and stay. Hopefully their human will continue consistently with whatever they are learning here. They love to learn these things. If done properly by the trainer, it’s a fun game for dogs.
The house is kept very clean on a daily basis. The dogs are given baths when needed with just clean water or baby shampoo. Their faces and paws are cleaned every day with baby wipes or a clean cloth with just water.
A flea and tick bath can be given if requested.
Your dog will enjoy daily walks through the streets of Centro and Gr**go Gulch in the hills of Puerto Vallarta. Each walk is treated as a training session. They are taught to walk nicely in a pack and be non-responsive to cats and dogs on the street. If they have fears, I try to desensitize them to whatever it is that they fear. A calm state of being is best for the dogs and for us humans. I continuously train myself to be calm.
There is often a walk to the Malecón in the morning or evening. It’s a 5-minute walk from the house. It’s a calm beach with very few people. The dogs love it or if they don’t, I can desensitize them to not fear the ocean and teach them to just sit and watch. Most dogs love it. They are rinsed off, brushed and towel dried when we return to the house.
Some dogs need to go out by themselves rather than in a group. I’m happy to do that.
TEACHING BASIC MANNERS
Regular training is charged at an hourly rate but I use the same ideas and techniques when taking care of your dog.
Commands that we hope to instill in your dog while they stay here are:
No: No means no. Now. Whether that’s lunging after another animal or barking. No means stop immediately. This can be a life saving or injury preventing command that I think is very important. Tricky situations can be deescalated quickly if the dog can obey this command.
2. Heel: walk with a loose leash on the human’s side in stride with the human’s leg, turning when the human turns, stopping when the human stops. Sitting while waiting if commanded to or taught that it should happen automatically.
3. Sit: The dog must learn to sit when told to in a calm assertive voice. This is a very civilized state to be in when calm behavior is required. It is an excellent command for safety when you are in a busy indoor or outdoor situation.
4. Down: Go from sit to lying on the floor calmly.
5. Stay: (on-leash and off). This is also a very useful calm state to be in when in the midst of a chaotic situation. It’s good for the dog and for the human. Calm is good.
6. Come: A fun command but also critically useful for the dogs safety. This is taught on a long leash until the dog performs the command reliably. Then they are to come from an off-leash position reliably when called (always and immediately). I cannot express how important this is for the safety of the dog and peace of mind of the human. Just imagine that your dog bolts out of the door when you open it or is on the beach or street and chases a dog or cat until it is out of site. To be able to command No! Come! and have your dog stop in it’s tracks and return to you…priceless. Panic averted.
