Traveling with your dog this fall?
Here are some tips for a safe journey with your furry friend:

-Make sure they have a collar and ID tags on at all times.⠀

Why We Use Treats for Training.

When training a dog, it’s important to consider what motivates your dog to learn. For most dogs, this will involve some kind of food reward. Think of treats as your dog’s currency. It’ll make the training process fun and, in many cases, quicker, since your dog will likely be more engaged and motivated to train with you.

Once a behavior is learned, treats can be intermittent, but it’s important to reward your dog in some form for good behaviors throughout their life. Just like receiving a paycheck can be a big motivator for most of us to go to work, the same applies for your dog when following a training cue in exchange for a treat, toy, or fun game.

Why Enrichment is so Important.

Dogs, like humans, can get bored and antsy. Different dogs have different needs and energy levels, so it’s important to understand your dog’s needs for both physical and mental stimulation. Simply walking your dog several times a day is not enough. Most dogs require indoor stimulation and enrichment, such as puzzle toys or interactive chews.

You’ll notice a big improvement in behavior when your dog’s needs are met.

Separation Anxiety and Confinement.

Many studies related to dogs with separation anxiety show that confinement can make the anxiety worse for a dog who is already anxious about being left alone. When treating your dog for anxiety-related behaviors, it’s important to test out different set ups to see which is the most comfortable and least anxiety-inducing for your dog.

Steer clear of any advice that says your dog should “cry it out” or will eventually “get over it.”

It’s always best to work with a certified separation-anxiety trainer (CSAT) who understands this behavioral disorder and can give you the proper tools for treating it.

When a Vet Visit is Recommended.

-Sudden behavioral changes, such as not wanting to be touched or irritability around other dogs or certain situations typically warrant a vet visit. In many cases, physical pain or discomfort are the causes of these behaviors, and it’s important to rule those out as possible factors before coming up with a training plan.

-Sudden changes in appetite and regressions with potty training are also good reasons to visit your vet.

-As trainers, we like to keep the communication lines open with our clients’ vets to make sure we are all collaborating and making sure your pup is receiving the best care possible.

Looking for activities to keep your dog entertained indoors?

Trick training is a great way to keep your dog mentally stimulated and have some fun together. Try using the 'sit pretty' cue with your dog to not only teach your dog a cute new trick, but also to strengthen their core.
⠀
To teach your dog to sit pretty, start by asking your dog to sit. Then, hold a treat above their nose and move it slightly above their head to encourage them to lift one or two front legs while maintaining the sitting position. Reward any lifting of your dog's front paws until they can hold the "sit pretty" pose.

You can assist your puppy by extending your arm out like a bar in front of them for support :)
