PAWS NY A nonprofit that helps older adults and vulnerable New Yorkers by helping them care for their pets. Thus, our motto: helping people by helping pets.

The mission of Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) NY is to help New York City’s most vulnerable residents remain with their pets by delivering critical programs and services through a community of partners and volunteers. Our programs help keep pets in their homes while protecting and promoting the human-animal bond that is so physically and psychologically valuable to our clients. For survivors of domestic violence, the most dangerous moment is often when they try to leave. Too many are forced into an impossible choice: safety for themselves and their children — or the pet they love.

No one should ever have to make that choice.

Recently, PAWS NY received an urgent referral. Kara* had just fled a violent attack and found safety in a domestic violence shelter with her children. But the shelter couldn’t allow pets — and Kara was terrified her partner would harm her beloved cat, Zuko, if she left him behind. Kara was faced with an impossible choice.

But thanks to PAWS NY’s Foster and Emergency Care Program, Zuko was placed with a loving foster just in time, keeping Kara’s family intact and offering her the chance to heal and rebuild without losing her most trusted companion.

Zuko quickly settled in, bee-lining to every soft surface he could find. Weeks later, Kara secured pet-friendly housing, and Zuko was reunited with his family in time for the holidays.

Right now, your support goes 2x as far! A matched gift means:

🚨Foster Alert!! 🚨

We are urgently seeking a new foster for Uneek, a terrific terrier mix, while his guardian receives medical treatment. Please see the details below, and feel free to share with your networks!

Uneek is a 1.5-year-old intact male terrier mix who is sweet, affectionate, and full of personality. He’s housebroken, loves his walks, and enjoys spending time with people.

Uneek cannot live with other animals, so he’s looking for a pet-free home where he can be the center of attention.

He must transfer to a new foster home before Monday, 12/22, and we’re urgently seeking someone who can give this loving boy a safe place to land.

Zerline never imagined she’d be unable to care for her beloved dog, Angelina. But after an unexpected accident and multiple surgeries, one thing was certain: she would never give up on her best friend.

Thanks to PAWS NY, she didn’t have to. Our volunteers visit daily — providing the consistency Zerline needs. One volunteer, Michelle, has become such a trusted presence that she lovingly calls Zerline her “New York City mom.” Because of this, Zerline can recover while staying united with the pet who gives her unconditional love.

“My pet gives me a reason to smile — and to get up in the morning,” Zerline says. “They love you regardless.”

This holiday season, our $100,000 goal helps ensure families like Zerline and Angelina can stay together. We’ve raised $24,000 so far, but we still have a long way to go. Will you help keep people and their pets together when it matters the most?

A beautiful tribute from John Mayer about laying to rest his soul dog Moose. "Our routine brought real comfort and stability" really resonates with what we hear at PAWS NY. Many of our program participants say the daily routine of having a dog is what gets them out of bed in the morning. It can be especially comforting for older adults as well.

Foster Needed! Josephine is a 9-year-old female spayed Pit Bull mix, weighing about 75 lbs. She’s housebroken, comfortable being left alone, friendly with people, and can live with other dogs. She walks slowly and steadily, so we’re ideally looking for someone patient who can also avoid multiple flights of stairs if possible.

We’re seeking a foster for approximately 6–8 weeks, with pickup on the Lower East Side anytime before Sunday, December 14th. We can reimburse one-way taxi/Uber pet travel costs. Reach out to [email protected] if you can help out and please share with your networks!
