PAWS NY

PAWS NY A nonprofit that helps older adults and vulnerable New Yorkers by helping them care for their pets. Thus, our motto: helping people by helping pets.

The mission of Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) NY is to help New York City’s most vulnerable residents remain with their pets by delivering critical programs and services through a community of partners and volunteers. Our programs help keep pets in their homes while protecting and promoting the human-animal bond that is so physically and psychologically valuable to our clients. We hope you'll help raise awareness for our work by inviting your friends to follow our page!

This week's staff spotlight is our founder and Executive Director Rachel Herman! Rachel is the heart and soul of PAWS NY. Before founding PAWS, she worked in the nonprofit sector, including time with the ASPCA. She has been working in the nonprofit sector for nearly 20 years.

During her time at PAWS NY, Rachel has been named “New Yorker of the Week” by NY1, “Holiday Hero” by The New York Times, “40 Under 40 Rising Stars in the Nonprofit World” by NYN Media, and “Young Social Impact Hero” by Thrive Global. Rachel received her B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Crime and Justice from the University of Michigan and her Master of Public Administration from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, where she specialized in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy.

Rachel lived in NYC for 17 years (the last 13 in Brooklyn!), but recently relocated to Connecticut with her husband and two young daughters. Rachel’s nine-year-old is already excited to work for PAWS when she grows up, and both girls love cats as much as their mom.

Next up in our Staff Spotlight Series is Liz Raganella, pictured here with her rescue dog Obi! Liz (she/her) is a native New Yorker who believes in the power of community and the love shared between humans and animals. She graduated with her B.S. in Psychology from St. Joseph’s University, where she participated in and coordinated community service projects in Philadelphia.

Wanting to fully engage in a year of service, Liz joined AmeriCorps after graduating and spent a year in Denver assisting people experiencing homelessness and low-income community members with accessing healthcare. She continued working with this population at a community resource center and noticed how her clients would go to any lengths to protect their pets and how that companionship made a big difference in their lives during difficult times. This stuck with her, as Liz has been a lifelong animal lover, and she is grateful to combine her interest in human services with animal welfare at PAWS. Show some love for Liz in the comments!
