Was talking about pain management there other day in my chihuahua chat group. Get ahead of your elderly dog’s stiffness and arthritis with medications that are waaay less intense than painkillers or NSAIDS.

Every day I practice a little bit of grooming with Siggy, my current board and train dog.
It’s just any quiet time that we’re together-I can give him a chew toy and while he’s working on that I get my tools out and I do some “mock” grooming, where the goal isn’t to get some thing “done” – it’s more about acclimating him to the process slowly and incrementally so that it’s not something unpleasant.
Siggy is a keeshound dog.

As a mechanically inclined person( I used to work on my own cars) I knew this story, and KNEW that KONGS totally resemble car bushings!

How the Kong ball was invented.

The Kong toy was invented by accident more than 40 years ago when Joe Markham needed a way to prevent his German Shepherd Fritz from biting on rocks and sticks. Fritz, who Markham adopted as a shelter dog, had worn down his teeth to one-third of the size they should have been.

He was working on his vehicle and tossed an axle stop with an attached bracket on the ground. His dog got hold of it and loved it. He was playing with it joyously, much to Markham’s amusement.

He said to his friend, “What do you think of my new dog toy?”

His friend replied, “Actually, it’s not too pretty. It looks like an earplug from King Kong.”

And the Kong toy was born☝😉

Expedient ways to handle everyday problems.
This pup was afraid of his owners cane, so rather than just desensitizing to the cane we worked it into a cue she can give with it that teaches him to lie down if she taps the floor with it. He got over being afraid of the cane WHILE learning that if he lies down when she taps the floor with it she gives him a treat. Creative problem solving for the win win!

This is something I just learned about. Donate your pacemaker!!

Did you know:
If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human, but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive.
You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not.

I made this video over the weekend - Working with new puppies over a weekend in their home gives me time to really make progress and teach their "pawrents" without the clock ticking during an hour long lesson. Of course I record my lessons with clients so they can refer back to them as needed.
Here's a video snippet of me working on some GROOMING ACCLIMATION with a NEW puppy CAVALIER KING CHARLES spaniel named MILO.

Bet you didn't know I dabbled in CATS before I was a full time dog trainer.
Welp! yes, I raised two kittens before I was 20, and used to show my housecats in the cat show "circuit" for the household pet division which is for any unpedigreed cat.
They separate the cats into Domestic Shorthair [DSH] and Domestic Long Hair [DLH] and that's that. Here's a chapter in a video book I did many years ago about creating a great INDOOR home environment for your kitty! 💚

How Did we Get Here, Fido?

I’ve always LOVED dogs! Wait! that’s actually NOT how it happened. In fact, I was a “cat person” through my teens-and then my dad brought a dog home and luckily it didn’t eat my cat. It was a Siberian Husky, and while that didn’t CAUSE a giant transformation- it did start it. Most dog trainers started their working careers in an alternative field, and then SOMEHOW we got HERE. I was an ARTIST in the early 1990s. I had numerous gallery shows and sold my photography and later handmade jewelry. However, it just wasn’t DYNAMIC enough for me. Plus, I had moved away from home and missed my family dog [by this time my family had a rescue BORDER COLLIE mix-and I LOVED that BEAST immeasurably.] So, I had started looking for work/ volunteer work with animals... and fast forward a bit more... here we are.

For the moment, and into the future, we are working to offer our clients safe and effective virtual solutions to your dog training questions and coach you and your dog in the safety and comfort of your home, and at convenient times for you and your family.
