PSA (or rant, you choose):
They are either Satins OR Silkies; there is no such thing as a satin silkie.
They are either pencilled OR laced; there is no such thing as pencil laced.
🤦🏼‍♂️
PLEASE research before buying into fads..

Blue Partridge - Splash “sports:”
This little cutie came from two blue partridge parents. Because we are working with the andalusian blue gene, Blue Partridge breeds just like a B/B/S (Black, Blue, Splash) pen. Blue X Blue yields 50% Blue, 25% Black, and 25% Splash - IN THEORY (genetics aren’t always perfect). This chick is considered a “splash partridge;” some will refer to as a “sport” or a throwback variety/odd byproduct. I don’t consider them odd at all because they can be expected when crossing a Blue Partridge to another Blue Partridge. They can be very helpful in accelerating a blue partridge program because crossing them to standard “black” Partridge should give you 100% Blue Partridge offspring. Unfortunately this particular chick has the wrong comb type, so it’s going to live in Emily’s pet pen, but I am hopeful this same cross will produce a couple usable splash partridge chicks for us.

Keeping track of lineage:
At hatch, I place a colored rubber band on each chick’s leg to note which breeding pen it came from. At two or so weeks of age, I wing band everyone that has made the cut in the first couple rounds of culling (right out of the incubator, and again just before wing banding). Wing bands are such a convenient form of permanent ID, each with their own numbers and completely hidden from sight once they grow out and feather in a bit. Leg bands are fine too, especially the ABA permanent bands, but there is such a short window to get them on - put them on too soon and they just fall off, wait too long and the foot has grown too big. Wing bands can go on at any time.

This season’s chick makers!
We typically hatch from mid November until the end of March. Cody works in the natural resources field here in Ohio, so winter is usually nice and slow. Brooding chicks during the cold months may sound like a pain, but we have found that this time frame works out best and makes for fairly hardy chicks with practically no risk of loss due to coccidia.

This gorgeous pullet had to stay home from the big show. Unfortunately she developed a bit of a head bob and a possible high placing wasn’t worth risking her life. Maybe next year little one. 🤍
