Forever grateful for my “tricky horses” they have contributed a very large part of who I am today. In and out of the saddle. Horses are true teachers, and I have developed more patience in my riding and training because of the tricker ones. I owe so much to so many but I do have to raise a glass and cheers to the tricky ones.🥂 I have been blessed with a few tricky teachers. Happy to have one of my personal horses Blue Skies that I adopted from Horses Without Humans Rescue Organization our partnership keeps developing and I am grateful I have had the experience prior to help him along. He of course continues to help me develop more tact and feel as they all do.
The tricky horses need you.
Don’t give up on them.
Tricky horses taught me to ride.
They gave me opportunities when I had no money for a nice horse.
They gave me street credit.
Tricky horses built my business.
They built my toolbox. 🛠️ 🐴
Tricky horses allowed me to learn how to help horses, so that I can instruct clients how to help their tricky horses.
I should move on to easier horses that will bolster my show record, but for someone reason the Tricky horses find their way to me.
My first prelim horse was a tricky horse with a knack for rearing.
My FEI prospect looks like a floating Black Swan, but feels like you’re riding a powdered keg of dynamite.
My Grand Prix horse turns into the devil in most warmup arenas. And if you can survive that, he will fancy prance up centerline like nothing happened. 😇
If you’ve been struggling with a Tricky horse, find someone who has a bigger toolbox than you and get them help.
Be vulnerable. Admit that there are people out there that know more than you.
I can’t tell you how many tricky horses have come into my barn with people that say “Why don’t they just send them to a cowboy?” When really all the horse needs is proper guidance from a competent rider.
No your horse doesn’t need a cowboy. It needs Full Training with a professional because it lacks understanding or leadership.
Sometimes the Tricky horses have a training issue, a tack issue, or a soundness problem. It can be like solving a puzzle to see those horses thrive. 🧩
But if you’re hardheaded like me, young and lack the common sense to throw in the towel for easier horses… I’ll be cheering for the riders struggling with their Tricky horse! It takes patience, education and a community of peers who know the struggle to produce the special ones.
