Take precautions now for the 4th.

Ensure that your dog or cat has current ID tags and updated microchips. If they do flee from the sound of fireworks, these should greatly increase your chances of reuniting with them.

Keep your pets indoors and distracted. The bright lights and loud sounds of fireworks can trigger your pet to run away from a perceived danger. Turn up the TV, keep all the doors shut and don't take your dog or cat to fireworks shows, even if pets are allowed.

Know where your dog or cat is at all times. Don't leave your pets unattended outside, no matter if they are fenced in or not.

Some pets may feel safer wearing a ThunderShirt. These wraps apply gentle, constant pressure to an animal's torso to help them feel safe and calm. ThunderShirts are widely available online and at pet stores.

We are on the final countdown to one of our most dreaded times of year, sadly. Fireworks are traumatizing for many animals, not just dogs and cats but also wildlife. Not to mention veterans with PTSD. I sure wish we could move away from fireworks and use silent fireworks or drones. Unfortunately that won’t happen this year. So here are a few ways we try to work through the scary booms with our beloved furry family members.

1. Offer snuggles and treats, try to distract and comfort
2. Play calming music, use white noise or fans to drown out the noise
3. Never let your animals outside unattended.
4. Make sure fences are structurally sound, no loose boards, no places for them to dig/escape, and then also make sure you reread number 3.
5. Make sure your animals are microchipped in the event they do get spooked and get out, and be sure to have updated photos, both portrait and full-body shots.
6. Talk to your dog in a gentle tone voice and let them stay near you if that helps support them.
7. Talk to your veterinarian about meds to help calm them, and if you’ve used them in the past, make sure you have the supply you need on hand. Renew prior to the event (and days leading up to the event) and allow your veterinarian time to fill the order.
8. Offer an interior room that can muffle out the outside sounds such as an interior bathroom
9. Stay home with your dog
10. There are all kinds of products that have to potential to help comfort such as Thundershirts and ear muffs.

You can do all these things, including exposing your dog to noises leading up to the event and training them via positive-reinforcement, and it can STILL be traumatic for your animal. Do your best and hopefully one day we can find some sort of celebratory display where it doesn’t negatively impact such a large part of our population. 💔
