*** we not only didn’t have to pay Anything on the small claims case but we actually were awarded money. This is great news because we can continue to improve things for our horses and the ranch community. ***

It has been a very big day for adulting. We have a small claims court hearing tomorrow in Roseville.

On the bright side we did get to take a tour of the historic Auburn court house while filing some last min paperwork.

I remember always looking for the court house in Auburn when my parents and I passed through to Reno when I was young.

I don’t love that I was there filling out paperwork but I do love that the court house is operational and the building is absolutely beautiful. Every time I enter that beautiful building I feel like I step back 100 years. The people that run the building are equally awesome.
This is why I love our little small town 💜

Progress Check

We had a meeting with the court today about our minor use permit. We are making some small edits to our plans then we are going to have our hearing in March. We are gutting it out and doing the hard things to make our future better.

Progress Check

One of our goals this year is to wrap up our minor use or boarding permit with Placer County. We have a meeting tomorrow to review our proposed plan and get feedback from the planning department.

How are your goals coming along? I woud love to hear!

Oh and I did ride my horse twice so far this week 😍 well… that was after I got the mud off him 🤦🏼‍♀️

2025 Goals

Ok when thinking about goals for 2025 we need to KISS it.

KISS? Keep It Simple Stupid.

We need to set goals that are achievable, and measurable and of course specific.

Our goals for 2025

1. Wrap up our boarding permit with Placer County and find harmony with our neighbors.

2. Pay off our personal debt. Ranch remodeling is not cheap.

3. Plan and go on a peaceful vacation where we are not stressed or worried.

4. Communicate with each other first. Work together to achieve our goals.

Oh and of course ride horses at least 3 days a week 💜

Lastly, continue all the great things we started last year like being intentional, taking it on, doing the hard stuff first and having a clean desk!

This is one of the reasons we switched over to hay cubes. The horses still get the forage but they do not have the long stems to contend with.

What is your why?

Why do you get up each day and go to work and do all the adult things you need to do?

Take a blank piece if paper and write:

Why do I go to work each day?

Why is that important?

As you answer each question take the time to drill deeper into the why.

Before you read mine do yours!

1. Ok so why does Jess get up each day and do all the hard adulty stuff?

To make money.

2. Why is making money important?

I need to make money to pay the mortgage and all of the other bills to keep the household going.

3. Why is it important to pay all of the bills?

It is important to pay all of the bills because I love our home, where we live and that we have the ability to share or space with our children, grandchildren and of course the horse.

4. Why is all of that important?

It is important to create stability and a safe place for our family, the animals and our friends.

5. Why is that important?

I want Allen and I to be known for creating a beautiful safe environment for and want to be known for being a good provider.

When I did this for the first time 25 years ago my 5th why was money! And when I did it again 20 years ago it was recognition because I was just starting out in management. As I get older and grow my emotional maturity my 5th why evolves and changes.

At the end of the day you have to make money to be successful.

It is really important to understand your why before you can ever achieve your goals. Knowing your why gives you the passion and fuel to make it happen each day.

As we enter 2025 it is time for some reflection. What went well in 2024?

In 2024 Allen and I wrote down 4 goals.

1. Be intentional.

We achieved this goal by really thinking through decisions. Thinking about the why or long term ramifications. Sometimes we had to say no which was hard. We communicated our goals and worked together.

2. Do not let things go.

It is really easy when you are “nice people” to let things go. To not deal with things because conflict is hard. 

We made several changes on our ranch and set new boundaries. These were hard things to do but holding to our morals and establishing boundaries really helped us drive to our goals.

Additionally, we took on getting the ranch completely complaint and seeking our boarding permit.

We communicated with our neighbors and took feedback and made changes to reflect we understood what was important to our neighbors.

We had to remove several boarders from the ranch who were creating a toxic environment.

This was a huge loss in income to us. Rather than feeling sorry for ourselves we did a big pivot and changed our business model. Rather than focusing on boarders for income we work with charter schools. This is better for us because it is m-f during normal business hours. Big improvement!

There have been many obsticals and changes but we continued to push along.

Non of this was easy but we stuck to our guns. Most of all Allen and I worked as a team.

3. If it is hard take it on.

Ok we all have a lot to do and the hard stuff generally gets done last cause it is hard and you don’t want to do it.

Allen and I made it a big focus to wake up each day and do the hard stuff first.

It seems like a simple statement but if you actually do this it is a total life changer.

4. Clean Desk /Clean Conscious

So at the start of last year our office was in our room and on my side of course 😂

When you work from home you have a lot of freedom but that freedom can also add to long hours and never really stepping away.

Last year I decided I woud not finish work until my desk was clear or cleaned up. This was a game changer because I was able to truly rest and spend time with my family when work was done.

Allen has watched me struggle with this for years and did a big thing to help me out. Allen took a week away from working out on the ranch and helped me re model the spare bedroom into a office.

Having an office space bas been incredible! When I am up at 3 am doing this stuff he gets to sleep in peace 😂 the office is located at the front of the house so I can see what is going on at all times. It is a clear clean community space where I can work, have privacy and quiet. Best of all when I am done working I can leave the room and shut the door.

Anyhow 2024 was full of ups and downs but I truly believe we made impact on our top 4 priorities.

So we just got a visit from animal control about our manure pile.

Per county guidelines the stalls need to be cleaned every 2 days. The pile is proof the stalls are being cleaned.

The manure cannot smell or cause vector problems. It is very wet right now which is why the pile is larger than usual. It does not smell and is not causing any fly issues as it is too cold.

The manure will be picked up this week once the ground has dried enough not to be an issue with getting stuck or tearing up the ground.

If someone ever has a question I encourage them to reach out to us directly.

We actually just had a review with animal control a couple weeks ago who had zero negative feedback for us. They were highly impressed with our organization, processes and level of care for the horses.

We are nice people who are trying to make a living.

The complaint also stated the horses are popping in their new shelters and pens. Again … 💩 happens and this is why we muck stalls every 2 days and put it in the pile to be hauled off.

The negativity and unwarranted complaints need to come to an end. It seems there is a lot of education needed and I am happy to help with that. In the summer it is hauled off more often but with the mud it has to be delayed this time of year.

I am coming at this with true humility. This year needs to be better. If you have feedback or questions please give it directly so we can work this out like neighbors should.

All fine points as we start 2025!

This is the year of Mindset. We are focused on being UNSTOPPABLE in 2025!

To us this means not letting the small things hold us back. Having a greater vision and doing what is needed to achieve our goals. Knowing what our goals are and being relentless about making them happen.
