Dr. Emond was recently awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Woodbury FFA Chapter.
FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership.
Dr. Emond often gives educational talks and demonstrations at Nonnewaug High School, and he’s honored to be a part of the students’ experience.

We are starting to get busy with our spring farm calls for routine vaccination!
It was still a little chilly for mid-March this morning, so Dr. Emond spared his winter hat to make sure senior patient Charlie’s ears were warm too 🐴❄️

Candlewood Equine recently hosted an educational field trip for the Wamogo Agriscience program!
The students toured our reproduction clinic, watched Dr. Emond thaw and process a frozen semen sample, and learned about the mare’s reproductive tract by watching Dr. Emond perform an ultrasound exam.
We were happy to have such attentive guests, and hope everyone enjoyed learning a little more about equine reproduction!

Seen in the first photo is a canine tooth almost entirely engulfed in periodontal plaque.
First, Dr. Emond is removing the plaque and buffing the tooth with a diamond S float.
Then, plaster of Paris is being applied to fill in the porous surface with extra calcium, which prevents recurrence of the plaque.
If not removed, this plaque could have caused the canine to loosen due to decay or even an osteomyelitis of the mandibular bone!

Yesterday, Dr. Emond attended a riding clinic with Sara Geikie held by Emily Emond Dressage. As one of the speakers, his lecture on “Maintaining the Senior Performance Horse” was interactive while Emily demonstrated the ageless fitness and ability of 24-year old schoolmaster “Andy," owned by Judith Kaderli. The clinic was held at John Williams and Joanne Kovacs lovely facility in Southbury which included vendors and lunch! It was fun and informative with a wide array of 3 - 24 year old horses.

Help horses affected by the Southern California wildfires!

As almost 11,000 firefighters struggled to contain a massive string of 15 wildfires in California’s wine country, horse owners teamed with veterinarians and evacuation site operators to move animals out of the blazes’ ways.

While the fires raged, more than 500 horses were moved from the fire zone to fairgrounds evacuation sites in Sonoma County alone. Still others were moved to evacuation sites in Orange, Mendocino, and Napa counties.

Dentistry in horses involves filing sharp hooks and points that can develop on teeth. If left unfiled, they can cause lacerations in the mouth, problems under saddle, and limit the mobility of the jaw. When mobility of the jaw becomes limited, larger hooks and points grow, and a vicious cycle develops.
Here Dr. Emond is performing a routine dentistry using a powerfloat instrument. Horses with no dental abnormalities usually require an annual floating.

We have two visitors in the clinic this week!
Dr. Emond’s granddaughter Charli came all the way from Kodiak, Alaska and Liz brought her a pony for the week, Millie!
They are having lots of fun together and Charli is learning all about horse care, and even riding!

Memorial Day Tribute: All gave some..some gave all.

Over the years many military men, women and animals have been wounded and given their lives for us and the freedom of our country. This Memorial Day, we say thank you for their sacrifices for us. They paid a big price for us to keep our liberties.

It’s in the clinic!
This large, traumatic puncture wound occurred on 11-15-17. It was about five centimeters deep, and exposed the caudal masseter musculature and fascia. Dr. Emond repaired it using a three-layer closure involving both sutures and staples.
The first photo shows the wound, the second photo was taken immediately following repair on the same day, and the final photo is how it looks now, after healing!
