The axolotl takes its name from the Aztec deity Xolotl, the god of fire and lightning, who is said to have transformed into an axolotl to evade being sacrificed by the other gods. This mythical connection mirrors the axolotl’s modern story of survival. Though its wild population is critically endangered, the species has managed to evade total extinction by thriving as a beloved pet in homes across the globe. For now, just as his divine namesake, the axolotl has found a way to escape its fate.
