Newry Lions Treasurer Francis Shaw, President Mike Klock and Secretary Wayne Conrad presented checks for $400 each to Kellie Alianiello of Mending Hearts Animal Rescue and Kristina Daveras of The Central PA Humane Society. Proceeds were from this year's Bark In The Park event at the Newry Lions Park.

Smokey gets a moment with the next Newry Lions President, Lioness Sara. Her Great Grandmother, Mary Leighty, hired attorney Harry Benton to write the original 17 acre deed for the Newry Lions Club Park in 1959.

Here's a shout out to Bill Stclair for having a great bird dog obedience demonstration at Bark In The Park. The kids loved every minute, even the race against Bill's bird dog. Bill wanted a picture with Smokey the Bear but their schedules were tight. A picture with Lion Ron will have to do.

Special thanks to Mandy Burgoon from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for bringing Smokey the Bear and her son Aaron to Bark In The Park.

Mandy is a forest firefighter and certified forester who helped the Lions Park determine which trees needed trimmed and removed from the park. She also pointed us to the resources for planting the riparian buffer.

There was some concern about how the dogs would react to Smokey The Bear since bear and dog relations have been tenuous.

As Smokey walked through the vendor area there was almost complete silence until an emotional support dog broke through and licked Smokey's paw which put everyone at ease.

Smokey then watched as Aaron and Mandy helped plant a ceremonial Dogwood tree to help commemorate the first Lions Bark In The Park.

At Bark In the Park on Saturday May 18, Newry Lions will be hosting Smokey The Bear for a ceremonial planting of a dogwood tree.

From orphaned cub to internationally known Forest Service icon. Capitan, New Mexico is the birthplace of Smokey The Bear. On May 4, 1950, a carelessly discarded cigarette started the Los Tablos blaze in the Lincoln National Forest which burned over 17,000 acres. Smokey says "Prevent wildfires!"

Happy International Guide Dog Day! Future Leader Dog Beacon is On the road again with Jason, Trisha and Lions District 14G promoting Leader Dogs for the Blind :

FLD Beacon was named for the PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp to celebrate 75 years of Beacon Lodge serving children and adults with camps developed for people with special needs.

FLD Beacon is a rock star, settling on his mat easily in between people picking him up for photos and being shown off during speeches. Here is to another 75 years of service!

FLD Beacon won't be at Bark In The Park Saturday May 18 from 10-4 because of an earlier commitment for a Lions awards show in Harrisburg.

At Newry Lions Park the stream bank reinforced by Trout Unlimited held up well against the flood waters. South Park Lane next door did suffer some overflows. This caused Poplar Run to briefly join the Leighty nature trail. This gave the young trees in the riparian buffer a good watering for spring!

Thanks to the Blair County Conservation district for the riparian buffer and important stream bank repairs that keeps erosion from threatening the town's sewer main that runs through the park.

Leader Dogs for the Blind Prison Puppy Raising Program

Prison Puppies pairs Future Leader Dogs with model prisoners who have demonstrated they can be trusted to provide 24/7 care to a puppy for one year. Prison-raised dogs are more likely to successfully become a Leader Dog than those raised in a home setting. Prison Puppies places about 100 puppies per year with inmates. Inmates who are raised a puppy have a greatly reduced rate of recidivism. Many express pride and gratitude for the chance to give something back to society. Brooke and Leader Dog Sampson: Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind

Brooke: "There was this one girl who said instead of getting a driver's license when I'm 16 I'll be able to get a guide dog and for some reason that stuck with me. Ever since then I was obsessed with getting a dog. I heard about Lions summer experience camp through my orientation and mobility teacher who knew i was looking for guide dog schools.

I am so much more comfortable using my cane now and my skills have grown so much. I remember i did a drop off where my trainer dropped me off about a couple blocks away from the building and i had to find my way back."

After that it was natural for Brooke to want a guide dog and pairing her up to Sampson was her final step into her independent lifestyle.
